About 7 months ago, I bought a top gear jacket & pants from the dealer from which I bought my Kawasaki Ninja 500. Today, as I was gearing up to pick up my new VFR800ABS, the zipper on the jacket failed. When I called the dealer from whom I had purchased the jacket, I was told that I'd have to call Top Gear's toll-free number and make arrangements to send the jacket to Top Gear for repair. When I said that I thought they (the dealer) should take care of everything, they said that if they sent it back for repair, I'd have to pay for the shipping.

Note that the dealership from which I bought the VFR is owned by the same company from which I had bought the Kawasaki and the jacket.

I 'phoned the saleswoman who sold me the VFR and told her that I would not be able to pick up the bike since I was not about to ride a new bike without proper gear and that it could take weeks to have the jacket repaired. Meanwhile, I was not about to ride anything. She made arrangements to get me a different jacket and send the failed jacket in for repair. Had she not done that, I'd have seriously considered stopping payment on the check for the VFR; it handn't yet cleared.

It seems to me that when one buys gear from a store, one has a right to expect the store to take responsibility for servicing the warranty and seeing to it that the customer is not without gear. In fact, the manufacturer should require retailers to do that and pay any expenses that the retailer may incur. It also seems to me that a zipper should not fail after only 7 months of use; the jacket actually looked totally new.

I'm wondering whether others have had problems with defective gear and how the problems were resolved.
