Ahhh...that new helmet smell...
I received my size XL and wore it during my commute to work yesterday. It's a comfortable helmet, though I wonder if a large might be a better choice for me...it could be that it just fits different but it doesn't feel quite as secure on my head - just a bit looser than my Shoei XSP.
I understand, now, why people like the modular concept - this is cool!! Pop the chin up and the world lies before you, open and unencumbered, but your helmet is still on your head. Point one - with the chin up the balance is different and the helmet "feels" much heavier on your neck.
And speaking of heavier, it is - the metal latching mechanism, though made of magnesium, and the added "girth" of the mechanism (and the cosmetic treatment to smooth the helmet when closed) add mass. On my head, with the chin down and latched, it isn't significant but it is noticeable. I could get used to it.
On the road there is significant wind noise...so much so I can not hear my very stock bike at all above 50 MPH...This, I don't like. I can place my hand on the face shield side plate and make some difference in the noise level. The side plates have an air path at the back edge that I suspect is designed to draw air out; however, this may also contribute to turbulence and noise.
And speaking of venting, there are two - one on the chin that appears to direct air onto the visor, though NOT into your eyes (like my Shoei) and one rather large one on the top. The top vent is interesting as it opens a "hole" in the top at the front and a handful of scallops along the edges. When I opened this vent I felt air moving along my scalp. This I like!
Now for the really cool feature - There's a lever on the left hand side that, when moved up, drops a smoked shield in front of your eyes! No more carrying two shields!! It's there when you need it and gone when you don't. Is that cool or what? Similar to the rather expensive Schuberth...
AND, this helmet comes with hardware so the chin can be removed to make the helmet an open face Caberg Jet!!! That's almost as cool as the internal smoke shield, isn't it?
The ride home yesterday confirmed my two concerns about this helmet - it's too large and it's too noisy. The size I can take care of, but the noise is too much. It's a whistle near the ears at an annoying pitch for me � I suspect it's similar to what someone else described with his Schuberth. I really don't think ear plugs would make it less annoying due to the pitch. It annoyed me to the point that I wanted the ride to end quickly � so I was riding a bit aggressively�<grin>�fortunately, I wasn't observed by "the man".
I'm sending the helmet back to Aerostich � I'm disappointed since I really like the modular concept. It may be correct that no modular helmet could be as quiet as a full face helmet�though I would like to try a Roof Boxer just to see if it is different.
