Got My X-11

I got my X-11 today, and while I was messing around with it, I bumped (very lightly) into my desk. Now I have a rather large paint chip in my brand new helmet. If my desk we made of steel, or if I would have dropped her on the concrete, I would understand... but minor impact with the edge of a wooden desk?

What should I do?

I guess you could try calling Shoei's customer service if you really feel like the impact was way too minor to have caused any damage and see what they have to say?

Yep...time for a ride.

Shoei and any of its dealers will not be able to accomodate you for any damages the helmet sustained while in your possession. However minor you may feel the impact was at the time, any representative of Shoei (or other helmet company) will not be able to label it a "manufacturer's defect" which would constitute a warranty situation.

I wouldn't advise pressing the issue with your dealer or other vendor as this will likely destroy any relationship you may have forged with them. You'll try to tell them how minor the impact was, they'll continue to say that you can't prove the paint is bad...you'll get defensive and they'll hold their ground...you'll get angry and they'll call you an idiot behind your back for scratching your new helmet and not taking responsibility for your own actions. You get the idea...


Take it from me...I've been selling all kinds of helmets (and parts/accy) since '88.

Solution = nice sticker over the offending chip or some well matched and blended touch up paint.

It may have been structurally compromised...I'd advise sending it to me immediately for further ride testing. biggrin.gif

My Red X-11 took a spill off my handlebars and sustained a light chip but it was painted and seemed fairly durable. The graphic Shoei helmets appear to have a heavy vinyl or poly shrink layed over them with the graphic printed on it. Its seems less durable than paint. With that being said my X-11 Vermeulen has taken several hits with door frames and knobs and only shows light scratching so I am not sure what happened with yours.

You can always try Shoei customer service it cannot hurt to ask.

Yeah, I am going to ask Shoei what they think about it. I would never in any way blame someone else for my own actions unless it was somehow warranted. In this case, I feel like a helmet like this should sustain a light brush with some wood...

Like most have said here, I am probably going to get told to go screw myself. It's worth the try I guess.

I wouldn't worry about it. I was quite proud of my X11 too until I took a chip outta the shell on the side of a computer stand (long story). My remedy was some touch up paint and now I don't have to worry. Kinda like getting that first sratch on a new car feeling tongue.gif

I little touch up paint to get a close enough match and nobody will know the difference. If the color in the middle of the chip isn't that different anyway, take some of your S/O's clear nail polish, use it as a sealer tp prevent further chipping and go ride. Now you don't have to worry about that first chip/scratch.
.........you may check nail polish colors as a match for whatever area you chipped too. I did that on a cage and the nail polish matched perfectly and never faded or peeled for the four more years I owned the car.

Use it as a basket ball for a few minutes.
You will have a unique helmet, totally customized, with no more obvious dent.

I have a couple small chips on mine already from riding, stones or whatever off the pavement. Seemed like it chipped too easily. Don't really have the same kind of chips on my old ZII. That one chipped from actual impacts!
Really messed up the helmet riding around the infield of Road Atlanta with it on the helmet lock of my '99...

After a short ride tonight with the helmet on, I coundn't care less about the chip! I am still going to contact Shoei, but just to make sure they know that I know that they know... comp13.gif

I joined the club this morning. The vibration off teh bike while warming up knocked the helmet straight off. scratch on visor, chip on front (white paint...might just try to find some touch up paint, small chip on side and top. I was worried about but after riding and finding a lot of great company to get a nice exhilaration/aderneline rush.....came up on ,e...gsx-r 1000, r1, busa, and cbr1000. Rolling, but I kept up and had fun passing a tropper going almost 130mph....insane, he tried his radar on way after we zoomed by him, i guess he didnt bother.................

I used to brag how my x-11 never touched the ground until I split a beer w/ my x-fiance' & just let it drop out of between my knees for some dumb reason. Since then, I let it fall on the handlebar while I tried to put the bike on its center stand, by myself, on a gravel road in Alpine, WY near Jackson. Then I took it on Greyhound in a padded carry on duffle & chipped it up some more...what ya gonna do...just got to buy another 1 sum yr. Or maybe an RX7 Corsair Arai, the only Arai that fits my oval head...whatever, just ride!
