Suomy Helmets

Who here has experience with Suomy helmets? Post up and let me know what you think!

My only experience with Suomy was trying a few on at my local dealer. I wear an XL Arai (Quantum/RX7 shape) and tried an XL Suomy. I couldn't get it down past of my ears, so I tried an XXL...it would barely fit onto my head (with considerable discomfort). Their size chart shows an XL to be 61cm like an Arai, but it sure didn't feel like it. dry.gif

Man they look good, prices are just as high as shoei, would like to see how they are too...anyone???

Exactly....one strange fitting helmet to me. My son on the other hand said it was the best fitting helmet he has ever tried on. blink.gif

awesome helmet with conservtive sizing chart. great helmet that alot of racers use. my racing friend swears by them. prices are to steeeeeeeeep for me though. also have the greatest graphics.

I've toyed around with getting one. I've looked at them and done a bit of research myself. I wear an XL in Arai, and an XL Suomy fits me well. I believe they are the lightest helmet you can get. From what I can tell, from what I have read, and from what the guys at the shop tell me they are very high quality, every bit as good or better than an Arai. They do have some sweet graphics for sure. I still might get one. I'm torn between a new Arai and the Suomy. I'll probably make up my mind next spring when I actually get around to purchasing one. They are popular with the racers as well. For me, the order of importance in picking out a helmet comes down to: Comfort, weight, airflow, looks.. pretty much in that order. Any of todays race approved helmets should be safe.

Weight, ventilation, comfort (if it fits you), graphics and overall fit & finish.

The less than optimal:

Wind noise, price and visor change outs.

Overall, I like the helmet - but I would really like something a little less loud at highway speed. I'm not in the market to replace it, but probably won't buy another one when I need that next lid...

Agree, my wife has a spec 1r and its ridiculously light. She makes me change the screen for her (of course) and you can lose parts in the process, not one piece like my Shoei X11. Looks are awesome. Can't speak for wind noise...

I were a Spec 1r Suomy I love it. Very comfortable and light. There is more wind noise than some other helmets but that is because it was designed for professional riders on the track and vents very well. I was lucky and found mine in the recycler I paid 275.00 and it was brand new in the box.

I also have a Spec 1R. I like everything about it but the visor changes, and the top vents that don't close. So I put some tape over the holes during the winter. goofy.gif I"ll assume the Extreme versions have top vents that close. As for the noise. I have ear plugs. musik20.gif

I have a Suomy Gunwind it's a little over 2 years old and love it...I just went out looking at a Spec 1-R and tried it on and man it hurt my forehead...The bigger size was to big hell I'm 50 so I know my head isn't growing..I was dissapointed because their graphics are by far the best...

I have a Spec 1R and love it. It's the lightest helmet I've ever owned and fits great. Ventilation is awesome. The wind noise doesn't bother me since I wear earplugs.

Pricing wasn't cheap but an Arai is still more expensive.

I had the same experieince. The XL was way too tight and even with the double X I felt like the visor was right on top of my face. The qaulity seemed nice (good reviews) and it was light... But definitely try a few on in person then buy on-line to save a few bucks.

I have two of them, both Gunwinds. They do run small and seem to be designed for round heads rather than oblong heads. Still they are IMHO some of the best looking and lightest helmets on the market, I love mine.
As for price, I found my last one on ebay and paid $155.00 + shipping. Brand new, in the box!
