My mom is in her 50s, and is starting to get fragile. She dropped her bike in the driveway, and got whiplash a couple years ago (which I don't think she was treated for). Now whenever she wears a helmet, the weight of it causes her cronic pain for days after she has worn the helmet.
Lately she has been riding w/out the helmet. I want to know if there are any helmets out there that are designed for weak necks - something that might transfer some of the weight to the shoulders or something. I know BMW makes a 2 pound helmet (which costs four figures), but that may not solve the problem; it's still two pounds.
Sounds like a therapist is in order to strengthen up the neck. Not being able to hold up a helmet on your head is a big problem. AVG makes the full CF lid that is quite light, but is quite pricey too.
send her to physio and have her treated for her whiplash injury before she does anything else , they have certain exercises , ultra sound etc that will help , i'm no dr but calcium can't hurt if osteioperosis is creeping in , certarn muscles in the neck will compensate for hurt ones causing the hurt ones to become weaker through lack of use , after her physio is finished with let her ride her bike again -with a helmet ,-unless of course she wants to follow indian larrys footsteps .
Man thats a serious problem. I would have to agree with the other guys that the first thing she should do is go to either a PT or MD and have her neck checked out. The jostling of the bike or quick neck movement to check traffic doesn't bother her? I don't know of any alternative helmet other than your typical Harleyesque skid lid that is going to take much weight off the top of her head. At least she has the luxury of being in a state with no helmet law. If she was in NY she would be screwed. My feeling is that some pain after wearing a helmet is still better than the alternative if she was to dump the bike...
