Leather Jacket Fit

I just bought my first leather jacket ever on Saturday after hunting around for some time. I was at the Cycle World Int. MC show and a few vendors were there so I was able to try it on and sit on a bike. I liked the style, fit, and look of the jacket so I bought it on the site. My question is, after wearing it today on my commute, how should the jacket fit? It is the right length on my arms, not too loose or too tight, but when I am riding and sitting on the bike it wrinkles up quite a bit in the front. I am new to this leather thing, so I want to know if that is typical? When I am standing the the fit seems fine on my torso too.

I feel like I look ridiculous with it bunching up and wavy like that. Did I buy the wrong style for a sport bike? I just don't get it, it felt fine at the show when I was sitting on the bike. Will it break-in or is it I just need to get used to leather. huh.gif

It appears that particular jacket is made for less-sporty bikes, where you may not sit with as much forward lean. Many sport jackets I have seen actually seem like they're too short in the front, but get longer around the back. Those actually look dumb when you stand straight up.

That being said, I think it's something you'll just get used to. It's not wrong. I have a similar jacket, as well as a "true" sport one that's part of a two-piece suit, and they both bunch up in the front. As long as it doesn't push all the way up so that the collar digs into your throat, you should be fine.

One more think. Don't worry about what you look like! Who gives a rip? It's YOU that's getting the enjoyment of riding. Just look at all the sorry people in cars and know they are jealous. biggrin.gif

I don't see where the advertisement says that it has a "double" zipper in the front. My leather jacket is rather heave and will pretty much choke me if I don't unzip it from the bottom a little.

the leather should loosen up after a few wearings. my alpinestars did quite a bit.

UPDATE:

So after having this jacket for a few weeks now, these are my impressions.

First the bad: The jacket was designed on a mannequin standing up, not for sitting on a bike - sport, cruiser, or standard. It needs about three inches taken out of the bottom in the front because it bunches up rather uncomfortably(at least I don't like it) and it rides up your body, so frequent pulling it down at stops is required. The back of the collar rubs against my helmet when its riding up. The main zipper's pull broke off the other day. I now have a key ring through it.

The Good: Looks good (except for the stupid bunched up part in the front), has good venting options, warm even without liner (50 degree riding), 3M reflective piping for night safety. Seems to be made fairly well - we'll see.

My main conclusion after these two weeks. The jacket is great on the highway when the wind can keep it down where it belongs, but in city driving it is truly ANNOYING! pissed.gif

My off-the-rack Vanson jackets have fit pretty well but I'll probably just spend the eleventy-billion dollars and go custom next time. If I buy to fit in the shoulders and chest they fit a little loose in the abs and waist. It's tough being built like a super-hero. 491.gif

I'd say buy the matching leather pants if you can. I couldn't tell by the information on the sight, but, if the jacket and pants have a circumfrential (all the way round) zipper that should solve some of your problems. I wear an older First Gear two-piece suit and the jacket just seems to fit better with the pants attached plus the matching leather pants will, obviously, offer much more protection than denim.

I've always been a big fan of leather, but ever since my high-speed get off in August, I swear by it now!

This F^%$in jacket has just pulled the last straw. The zipper is now broken at the bottom inch. It will zip up, but the teeth don't stay together - about the first 10 teeth. I have emailed Tourmaster and asked for a full refund so I can hopefully buy something else. If they ignore me I'll let everyone know what piece of garbage it is, then I will take it to a leather shop, have 3-4 inches cut out of the bottom and a new zipper put in. This sucks.

I am really getting sick of companies saying how great their products are and end up being junk.

I bought a custom Vanson. It fit like a damn glove but cost 600+. Caveat: DON'T GET FAT! Because you will be sending back to Mr. Marc Van der Sleeson (Vanson) for it to be let out (like I will soon)

i"ve abused a perfed cortech impulse jacket and apex pants for about 4 yrs with no trouble. also had the opportunity to test the armor and stitching courtesy of a left turning dodge truck. when wearing both pants & jacket i use the full circumference zipper. i've never noticed the jacket riding up when not wearing the pants.

an oddity in the full circumference zipper... the pants are an "M" and the jacket is a "L" and the zippers have a different length. as a result, the pants get "tugged" off center which pulls the armor slightly out of a perfect alignment. not that big a deal and overall, i'd say a pretty good value for what is probably lower/middle price 2-piece set.

i recently shopped some 1-piece leathers. the most consistent advise has been, if you can get a new one on and off without any help, get the next smaller size. they're meant to fit while in a riding position, not hanging out at the local coffee bar.

I've had Tourmasters, Joe Rockets, Vansons, Fieldsheers, etc., etc., etc. over the years, and the longest lasting, best endurance, more comfortable the longer you own em' are the ICON Motorhead jackets. Extremely thick leather, good CE pads, rolled triple/ double stitch seams, never had a zipper failure. They're not "cut" as a race jacket, but are the ideal (IMO) jacket for all day in the saddle, comfy on or off the bike, real world street riding............... fing02.gif

Sorry to hear you are having trouble with your Tourmaster Jacket. I had the Magnum perforated and crash tested it once, (oops). Held up well. Pretty good jacket for the price.

I just recently bought this RS Taichi jacket with the matching black leather pant with full circumference zipper. Very nice fit and top notch construction. Got them from Terrapowersports.com. A bit pricey compared to Tourmaster, but not as expensive as Vanson or Dianese.

Thanks for the advice because before buying the Magnum, I really wanted the Motorhead. I was just not sure about it not having the collar. I may still buy that jacket since it's only $350. I want to try it on somewhere first though.

I also considered buying the leather alter ego from JR. I have the textile version and like it pretty well, but it's a little too big and was getting old.

For leather to not flap in the wind it has to fit snug. Occasionally I'll see a racer on the track with a flapping suit. When it starts flapping you can tell it's too loose.

That sucks about the zipper. It didnt last very long. I am looking at some tourmaster textile pants.
