It's probably all been covered before but since I'm new I'll ask:
Planning a week trip on the new VFR. No bags (ugly, expensive). How to people hold down duffle bags etc on the rear seat of the bike? The grab bars seem good for maybe 2 bungee shock cords, not for a net. Any other attachement point, like down by the rear foot pegs would chafe the fiberglass.
Tank bag of course but that will carry rain gear, maps etc.

I use a bungie net as a "safety" over my Tourmaster seat pack. Two hooks forward to the "frankenbolts" and two back over the grab handle hooks, works fine. You may want to consider running 1" nylon webbing with fastex buckles under the frame/seat and through your duffles' handles for a really positive primary attachment.

VFR_ATL, Thanks but what is a frankenbolt? My 2005 has grab bars but no other obvious attachment points other than the rear footpeg mounting brackets and using them would chafe the plastic. Sam

On my 5th Gen the frankenbolt is "Bolt, RR. Cowl Hook" Honda P# 5742663 90116-MGB-000.
It's a chromed fitting threaded into the frame below the passenger position with a flanged end and 1 1/2" of exposed bolt, just the ticket for bungie net hooks. Since I can't get a pic to attach of mine I was looking at the 6th gen image on the Honda website. Looks like there is no such handy fitting anymore ( 6th gen guys correct me if I'm wrong). If so you're correct in looking to attach to the passenger peg mounting bracket, 3M film over the paint would be called for. Bungie hooks close to the rear wheel make me nervous. I'd look into doing the nylon webbing & fastex buckle mounting as a primary attachment for your duffle and doing a thorough pre-ride, and gas stop, inspection of a bungie secondary.

Hi Sam,
I'm not big into luggage as most of my trips are single day affairs. I do do an occasional 4-5 day trip and for those I use a Renntec Sports Rack and a TourMaster Cortec tailbag. The sports rack uses the grab rail mounts and can be added and removed quickly and with little fanfare. The tailbag easily holds enough for a 5-day trip if you're a frugal packer. I don't trust bungee cords or nets, instead I rely on a set of AeroStich quick release cargo straps.

I have a Ventura rack on my ST1300 (modified to fit the 1300) and like it. the Renntech rack might be the thing for the VFR. Looks like you unbolt the grab bars and bolt in the rack, is that right?
