I'm looking for a new helmet for my 10 year old to ride use on rides with me. I own an HJC symax and am satisfied with the performance of the helmet. I just wish it was less expensive.
I have been looking out for other brands of flip helmets and so far I have only found these few.
Shoei sycrotec - cost more than the HJC, HJC symax - okay but cost is an issue, Nolan - did not fit sons head, Zeus - looks good, but need to check fit. specs - never heard of them before, Scheubert(sp) - can't find local to check fit and cost is ???
Maybe cost shouldn't be an issue when protecting your child. However if you are going for protection, get him a full face helmet. Cheaper and far better protection.
Find one that fits and go to ebay..I got one for my son Shoei full face for $50 in near new condition! Small price to pay for protecting the kid!
But how do you know that it was never dropped? I have three kids and think they are all priceless. I won't buy a use helmets for this reason however I would buy new off ebay. I'm not trying to start anything but a thought process. Please don't get offended.

I'm just trying to keep the cost down, especially since I don't know if this is going to be a helmet that he out grows or if it is going to be a dust bunny hut in the closet because he looses interest as he gets to be a teen.
If push came to shove, I would probably get the same helmet I have in his size (maybe the CLmax model). Right now I'm just trying to see what all there is to choose from.
On the cost issue check around on the web for deals. HJC Symax at retail was $249.00 plus tax. I got the second for my copilot for $168.00 no tax and free shipping online. Happy Shopping :D
Nightflight no worries no offense taken. I would only buy a Snell rated helmet and I would feel that any drop would leave a large enough mark to notice on the outer shell. The ones I have bought I perfect -not a single scratch. Maybe I am foolish that way but if you have other info I would love it!
This place has good pricing on HJC helmets: AZ Motorsports CL-Max. I really don't know a lot about the store, but they seem to be popular here on the board. It might be worth checking out.
I've bought two brand new in box Arais from eBay, both from real-life Dealers trying to clear out discontinued graphics designs. As with anything on eBay, check out who you're buying from. If it's Joe Gixxer, probably a good call to look elsewhere...

I bought a new Shoei Syncrotec a few months back, and wasn't satisfied with it. It was too loud(wind), and I felt like the flip up mechanism wasn't all that safe. I've been looking for something else ever since. I tried on a new Arai xd duel sport at the Honda Hoot and really liked it. It would be great for kids, it is soooo light and they could use it for street or trail. It's a little pricey but cheaper than having to buy 2 helmets.

I mean I already ride with a flip. I also witnessed a bad crash with one (same brand as mine), the helmet was wrecked but the rider was okay.
his passenger with a full face however took a broken jaw when her chin bar broke and the shield shattered. I think she is just getting finished with all the dental work that was not covered but their insurance. On the bright side, her teeth will now be perfectly straight and she has lost a lot of weight in the last nine months eating through a straw for a good part of it.
By the way I have and HJC. I bought because it had a very postive lock in the chin bar, I wonder what made your friend's helmet open up. Also was it the early model with the non flush button or the one with the flush button. Mine is the second.
The Zues did not perform well either, the lid flipped up on a fellow during a crash and he was injured on his chin. when it comes to kids the simpler the better. Standard full face without all the locks and slides to mess with, with a full face you just put it on and check the strap.
None of the flip up helmets are Snell certified. �In fact, I believe most of the cert companies don't consider flip up helmets safe enough for certification. �You're basically trusting your face to a small, plastic, bulk manufactured mechanical device. �Mechanical devices can and will fail. �It is in their very nature. �
Anyway, what HispanicSlammer said. Simpler is probably better. Most likely cheaper too.

V Vega has just come out with a new flip up helmet it retails for around $125.00. Check it out it may be just the ticket.
I have a V Vega (non flip) that I bought after a get off about 1000 miles from home. (needed a cheap helmet to get home with because my AGV X Vent got seriously pranged) The V Vega seems to be a shoei copy and it is pretty good (for the money) It also has upscale features like full venting, removable/washable liner, removable/replaceable cheek pads and anti fog windscreen. It is not even close to the quality of my Arai though.
Guys. �Snell isn't the only certification body in the world. �I know there are European certifications and have even seen a table comparing the tests between certification bodies.
Saying you wouldn't buy anything without a Snell rating is like saying you wouldn't buy anything that isn't UL approved when it may be CE or TUV approved.
Remember, testing costs money. �I'll bet the Europeans see the American market as mainly half helmets and full face. �Flip ups are just beginning to become popular here. Maybe they will spend the money for Snell to satisfy the American market soon.
The other thing I'd say is the "how much your head is worth" line is pure bullshit. �Looking for the lowest price or to save money is not an inexcusable sin. �Spend the least amount of money possible to get a helmet that meets your safety, comfort, and feature requirements. �If everyone to uses that line truly believes it, they would all be driving Volvos.
