Hey all. Looking for a recommendation on some summer gauntlets (bet you couldn't tell from the title). I have nothing specific in mind, but the knuckle guard should be present, and a palm slider preferred. Would be using for the commute and for trips. I have a pair of cold/wet weather gloves, so I'd prefer something for warm, sunny days. And with the apparent options, I'd like to stay at/under $150 (extra $ for local/USA product). A few I'm considering:
I really like my Held Airstream gloves. They flow a lot of air. My only complaint is the gauntlet is on the short side compared to my other gauntlet gloves.
How have those airstream IIs held up? I've heard mixed reviews about the durability of some of the newer held gloves
I've only had mine about 2 months and it has been cold in the mornings and a lot of rain lately, so I can't really comment on the durability yet. I wear them every chance I get, but it has been limited.
I think WERA803 found that the Held Agadir are no longer available when he went looking. They are what I have, and they feel like mesh with the slightest of breeze! Great hot weather gloves, in fact they are not really comfortable much below 65F or so. Also a pretty short gauntlet. If you can find them, great gloves.
I wore my Cortech Air Latigo gloves all through last summer in Memphis, and I never really found them to be "too hot" at all. I know it's not the same glove in question, but I have become a fan of Cortech in general.
I have the IXS Steller gloves as my summer riding gear. It is a well-designed gauntlet styled glove and is featherlight. The entire glove is made of nylon Keprotec material and there is leather reinforcements on the thumb and knuckle areas. A good option in my opinion.
I'm on my second pair of Knox Recon gloves (I burned a hole in a finger of my first pair). I think these are fabulous gloves.
Having broken both forearms and wrists in a meet-up with a hooved forest rat, one think I really appreciate about these gloves is the gauntlet. They impart a great deal of security.
I've had my Held Airstream for about 3 years I think (maybe 4?) and they are worn out. I ride about 5000 miles per year, commuting in mostly fair weather.
the leather has worn through between some of the fingers. Given the time and miles, that's probably ok.
My biggest disappointment is that the black part of the gloves sun faded to grey in less than 1 year. I never crash tested them so I can't speak to their protection level.
At any rate, they were not any better from a longevity or quality standpoint than my previous Alpine* gloves, but they were certainly more expensive. I think I will try something different this year.
In summary: pretty good, but I didn't feel they were worth the premium.
I have a pair of the Deer Tours outseam and they are great. I thought they were too small at first but you have to work that opening a bit to get it to fit over your hand and then...like a glove!
Those are all good gloves. I looked at those, too. AlpineStars makes a new full cuff and vented glove called the SP-Air. Really comfy, good ventilation, good protection, well-made, and a lot cheaper than Held, etc.
I compared the Alpinestars SP Air and the AVG Sport Laguna and wound up keeping the Laguna. They both are well made but the SP Air's were uncomfortable around the pinky knuckle area, I even ordered a second SP pair in case it was a fluke but they were both the same. Note that with Revzilla you can order multiple gloves and return them all or what you do not want for up to 30 business days without any restocking fees. A $7.95 return label can be ordered to cover the return of the entire order, so it is a safe way to compare and choose. P.S. I do not work for them but find their product videos, free shipping and return policy a good way to shop.
