I know....we did this this before. Since we lost everything in the archives, I feel we need to start these things again. I'm needing a new tank bag. I have the honda tank bag,which I like for around town, but I would like a bigger expandable one for trips. Any suggestion? What do you use?
I have a Nelson-Rigg magnetic that I never seem to take off the bike. I've never had it slip and the rain cover has never let anything get wet. It is expandable, but very tall when fully extended. If I were going to buy another one it would be a little wider and not as tall. Although I do like it that I can easily fit multiple face shields in it.

Basicly there are two different size bags and not one huge one. I can put either one on my tank or both. If I put both of them together and extend the bigger one I still can see the speedometer on the six gen (I am 6 feet). The magnets keep the bag safely in place. Tourmaster gives you a rain cover and if I am not mistaken I can wear the tank bag as a backpack with the included straps. One thing that worries me about this bag is the user guide says I should not exceed the 10 pounds weight limit. �??? Are they serious? My lock itself is 13-14 pounds! So, I have been putting more then 20 pounds in it such as food, school books, pair of shoes, locks, keys, vallet, cell phone and it still working fine. I would recommend this one. The MSRP would be $169.99, but at my stealership I could buy it for around $130 + tax.
What about "MOTOPAK"? I saw one at the IMS in Atlanta last week and it looked like a nice one. It was a 3-piece that topped out at 35 liters. It was only $80.00. Has anyone got one?

I'll second the TourMaster Cortech Tri-bag. Bought one this past spring to replace my 6 year old Expandable magnetic TourMaster due to a failing zipper.... and fading. Since the old bag had about 100,000 miles on it, I didn't mind going with the same company again!

I use a Marsee magnetic expandable bag... It's got a much heavier duty zipper than I've seen of the competition, and made with high quality materials overall. Got it for $110 a few years ago.
I have a Held Pegasus that I got from NewEnough. They are sold out now, but they are still available in a few places. They only had the tank strap bases left when I bought mine, so I picked up the magnetic base off eBay a month or two later.
It unzips to go from 12 liters to 25 liters. Just a no frills bag that does it's job. And it was cheap at NewEnough.
I have had the Joe Rocket Sport Tank bag for one season, and am very pleased with it. Actually got it online on ebay for about $45.00, new with the tags on it. But it shows retailing online for about $100.00. It isn't water proof, but the rain cover that does come with it, has done a great job so far in my limited riding in the rain.

I did the side-by-side comparison of the Tourmaster Cortech Tri-Bag and the Oxford Platinum Humpback. �I was all set on the Cortech Tri-Bag because of the praise here, and it is a very good bag. �However, I ended up with the Oxford because of better fit on my'04 and overall better build quality (e.g., material used [water resistant all on its own, but has cover as well], zippers, stitching, design, etc.), in my opinion. �It doesn't extend quite as high as the Tri-Bag, but then again I need to see � biggrin.gif . �I'm pretty sure the Oxford comes with a lifetime warranty. �Oh yes, POWERFUL magnets.
WERA910 and WERA803 saw it up close but I don't think inspected it too closely. �I guess you have to like the platinum color as well. �I didn't buy it for color. �I bought it for the material - very sturdy and still has fold-out braces if you need 'em. �They make 'em in black and other colors as well, but the platinum is very stable and sturdy. �At least the color matches my wheels if nothing else.
I have a fairly small Chase Harper magnetic bag that suits the VFR well. Too much weight inside and it can slide around on the tank a little, but no biggie. Magnetic is easiest whatever brand you buy. Set it on the tank, and go. Pick it up and carry it off at the other end. :beer:
I have larger one that straps down for longer trips which holds more. Straps are a bit of a hassle, but once you get the front and rear straps around the front of the frame you're set. Just buckle the bag on. Has straps to convert to a backpack. Has been handy at Laguna Seca. I forget the brand, it's a few years old anyway. Look for extra pockets to seperate little stuff for easy finding at a stop. A little hook thing sewed insde to hang your keys on is very handy, you'll know right where they are in the bag. :twist:
Map pockets that have a zip loc type closure don't work well in my experience. Hard to get sealed good. If you do get it sealed it inflates when the air warms. If you don't get it sealed your map can escape. Don't put your race tickets in there! Escaped even easier. :doh: Velcro closures on the map pouch avoid those issues.

I removed the nylon strap that goes around the headset, as the magnets keep it quite secure even without it. You can zip the bag off the magnetic layer and use it as a small backpack too, which is very comfortable.

marsee for me too. awesome bag, expands to what feels like chin high (not quite that high) never wiggles on the bike. excellent pockets
I have been using the Cortech Sportbike Magnetic Tank Bag for a couple of years now. It is very cool. Roomy and expandable. Rain cover, external pockets, converts to a back pack, and much more. . .
BTY the bike pictured on the above site will be for sale in the spring. It is a 1991 VFR750F, 24,000 miles, Corbin Gunfighter and Lady saddel w/ backrest. Powerlet accessory socket, new Reg/Rect, starter, battery, brand new rear tire, etc. If anyone is interested let me know.
I've had the Tourmaster TB-18 on the VFR for about 30,000 miles. It's a traditional tankbag with 3 strap mounting and lots of compartments. It works great for touring. I would definitely buy another one. The only gripe is that the rain cover doesn't have a clear panel so you cannot see your maps with it on (or in my case my iPod and maps).
I've also heard very good things about Wolfman tankbags and their service. I have a small one for my dualsport and it's very well made.
The tourmaster bags are good and a great value pick (I have a tank bag a tail bag and soft saddlebags) but RKA stuff is better and more durable. I'd go that route if I was to replace the tournmaster stuff.

Ditto. Nice bag. The bag closes across the front with velcro. This makes it really easy to pop the bag open and grab your wallet at a toll booth, even with gloves on. Of course, the easiest way to avoid this problem is never take the slab toll roads! tongue.gif The magnets hold very well. I've had way too much weight in the bag at triple digit speeds with no issues.
Mine is the Oxford Sports Expander tank bag, and am I ever a happy camper with it. Three zip together sections: base (includes map sleeve), middle (3" high, perfect for rain suit), main (about 5 inches deep, expands to 8 or so.) Comes with shoulder straps and back-pack straps as well.) [image: user posted image] A little pricey at $150, but well worth it.
Love my Marsee bag. Five years of near-daily use (roughly 65k miles) and it hasn't let me down. Incredibly stable with the magnetic set up.
They are a bit pricey, heck, they're expensive... but the company really stands behind the product. And the new ones have a silve interior to make life a bit easier when trying to find stuff.

If it's not too late to make my input: I got a Nelson-Rigg magneto... very nice. Holds all kinds of stuff (I happen to carry my lunch in it on my rides to work). The mags are very strong and it stays on no matter how windy it is.... although I'm sure if I put an 18 lb. bowling ball in there, the mags might give some tongue.gif
I have an inexpensive ($59) Joe Rocket bag that expands. It doesn't get in the way at all. I can fit all kinds of stuff in it. I do tend to have to go back to the gas station and pick it up on occasion. blink.gif

I keep my flat tire kit, spare R/R, tools, and registration under the seat. I did just get a Joe Rocket Manta tabk Bag Manta Tank Bag It is about the same size as my glove box in my car and has two top compartments on top of the main. Bel Radar detector in one and wallet, cell phone, Camera in the other $39. I was going to get a Marsee but the are $129 and up. My Samsonite did not cost that much. I don't care how good the zippers are. wink.gif

When we were out Saturday I made the comment, while getting gas no less, that I sometimes leave my tank bag on top of the pump. I don't ride with it too often and so I'm not used to having it. About two miles down the road I realized that I had left it on the pump.(insert doh emitcon here) We all got a big laugh out of my dumbassness. unsure.gif

I'm surprised no one has mentioned RKA. I've been using their 16L magnetic tankbag since 1999 (over 100,000 miles). Sticks great, expands adequately for travel, and is well made. Only recently have the zippers begun to give me the occasional problem, but I'll probably keep it for at least another year or two.

I bought their GT-30 tankbag and a tailpack. Delivery was a snap and the pieces look to be good quality. The tankbag converts to a backpack, has nice carrying handles and a raincover, etc. I liked that it was a Canadian product, too and the price was excellent. Got mine from eBay.
I just got a Marsee 25 liter pocket rocket and love it. Its nice and clean looking w/o tons of pockets on the outside. It has 2 nice zippered pockets on the inside top flap and a large main cargo area that zips to expand to 25 liters. I've had a Cortech tri-bag in the past and its o.k. but don't like the pockets on the outside, use the space for the main for me. Also the Cortech tribag uses the 2nd bag to attach for more space. This makes it HUGE sitting on the bike and I prefer 1 storage area that zips to expand larger. I do use a Cortech mini magnetic sport tank bag on my F4i to hold cell phone, wallet, glasses and the Marsee actually fits on the F4i as well if needed. I have lots of Cortech stuff (tail bag, jacket, pants etc) but for a good tankbag its the Marsee pocket rocket for me.
I currently own a little JR tankbag, but I don't really like it. The magnet flaps don't fit the tank profile at all and the giant rubber carry handle rubs the shit out of the paint. I cut the handle off, but ended up with similar wear from the edge of the bag trapping dust and rubbing it against the tank. I finally gave up and just tossed it in the back of my closet.
For the ten or twenty miles a week I ride, I really don't need a bag.
I just got the Icon URBAN tank bag. fing02.gif It fits my bike like a glove. The little magnets are super strong and wrap around the sharper angles of the tank dicretely and securely. The neoprene bottom helps too i'm sure. I just finished riding about 120KM in the rain and it has not leaked although i think i will get a shower cap type raincover for it. It looks small but it was the only bag i tried that could hold my laptop (15 screen). (joe rocket bags and oxford sports were too narrow) Its also a pretty styling backpack. (spent 129 canadian.) biggrin.gif
Take a look at Motorbags. I found a vendor online that was very good. The bag I puchased ($39.95) is identical to the Joe Rocket Sport bag. It zips apart into two pieces, one of which is a back pack. I have found it to be priceless. The only slight drawback is that due to the setup, a large helmet will not fit inside. It does, however, have four d-rings for a cargo net. I also use the Tourmaster Tri-bag. I mostly use the top portion which can expand quite large. I have not used both bags together yet so I can't comment on that set up. Each one individually has been tested to warp speed with no problem. wheel.gif
