Reserve A 5Th Gen Solo Rack From Kanadianken

I would like to have a 5th gen solo rack from Kanadian Ken. I pm him and yes he could do another batch but he needs 25 people to start a new batch.

The batch is ONLY FOR 5th GEN.

So here I am with 1 count towards hopefully a total of 25 soon.

It would be nice KanadianKen to have a photo of your latest model (Profile and mounted on a 5th gen bike) and tell us the money details and how we can pay or reserve an order from you.

I think that this rack with a Coocase is probably the best combination of cheap and quality luggage system money can buy.

By June 2nd 2013, if we don't have the 25 counts I will need to remove myself from this list...so lets make it that way;

Everybody listing there name in here as a yes for the solo rack, will need to find themselves

another solution on their own for a solo rack after June 2nd if the 25 counts as not been reached.

The reason is that later this fall I have a motorcycle trip.

Thank you everybody, think about it...but not too long.

Price?

Strong possibility i will be interested

#3

Price will be $135 USD - delivered via Canada Post / US Mail - Conti NA.

If the list gets to 25 people - I will then ask for a deposit from each - of $75 USD via Paypal.

Unfortunately - the last time I had a batch made for the 5th gen bikes - I had lots of "commitments" but it took me almost a year to finally get the money collected and the racks shipped.  Too much outlay of cash to get these done - if I don't have pre-orders.

Thanks!

Ken

Put me down for one!

So im number 2

Thanks

Lazy bastards will require some pics.

Yes - that thread shows the rack in place on Lobsters 5th Gen. However - that version of the rack used steel that would support a Volkswagen..... I had a look to see if I had any recent photos of the "Current" rendition of the rack, I'll have to take a couple tonight and will then post up.

Thank you for the pic. This is it, simple, sturdy closer to the rider. Awesome.

Could you say that a passenger could sit also...looks like it but I know this is a SOLO RACK.

I fear the shipping down here would be ridiculous...

#12

With a couple extra brackets you could convert it to a 12 O'Clock bar. :goofy:

Err, I mean, nice piece. But I did plan B a while back.

Good idea Ken. Make sure they're committed.

I've shipped several to OZ. I recall $45-50 Canadian to get it there - but it takes several months by Canada Post.

Lee - I've never asked for $ up front before - but I can't afford to be holding that much tied up DEBT. Its the only way I'll do it again for the 5th gen bike - last time was a nightmare.

I think it's the way to go, if you're gonna do it, Ken. Just hope if the list gets to 25+ you won't have a problem collecting the deposits. :goofy:

I hope it works out well for all involved. You make money, and 25+ people get a nice custom item.

Add me to the list, im in. Please pm me if/when this gets going in case I lose the thread. would be nice to be able to use a topcase!

Actually - I'm a little surprised by how many have already signed up. Give it a week or two, the list may continue to grow. I'll have to dig back into my PM's from members asking for a 5th gen rack - that I couldn't help.

I am out, the list is way short of 25 even with those who said they would buy 2! Too bad, with my coming trip I will need to move forward with a standard top rack out there.

So...I am removing myself from the list, up to you guys to wait longer or else.

Thank you for those who joined the list but we are a small group unfortunately. Good luck and see you on the road.

I build in an average of $25 for postage. So if its $50 to ship down under then add $25 to the $135 or total of $160 U S D.

I would order one if he made it for the 4th gen model. Just saying....

Ok - I'll talk with my "people" and see what I can do to get a shorter run made - than the 25 I usually have to commit to. I'll bump this thread as soon as I have some real info. thanks all!

Lobster - yours will cost you double - so do you just want one half of a rack then? LOL....

Did you really ride my bike up the ramp into the chock?

Never mind. What happens in Franklin...

again, depends on cost plus shipping, I think thats what stopped me before, the postage from up there to down here is ridonkulous.

Uh, I thought that's what a ramp was for.

If it was one of those single 10" wide ramps, I wouldn't have done it. But a full width trailer ramp? I've done it a million times. :wheel:

Resurecting a dead thread thats been brought back to life - yet again........

5th Gen Solo Racks are "in the works".

I don't have a firm timeline - but it'll likely be January or February of 2015 as a shipping date. I'm working on getting some firm dates ASAP.

Price will be in the $150 USD range, including shipping to Conti USA and Canada. Bolts, and spacers will be included.

Stay tuned........ Thanks.

#44

Time has flown since my last update on this - but I'm pleased to say that I'll have the 5th Gen Solo Racks ready to ship within the next week. I've been told they are back from powder coating, and will be delivered to me tonight.

I'll start up a proper thread in the classified section - but I wanted to mention it here first. Price will be $140 USD - includes shipping via Canada Post / US Postal and I'll also include Stainless Steel bolts, washers, as well as the required spacers. An instruction PDF will also be included.

I made 30 racks, and a half dozen are already spoken for - so if you want one please order ASAP.

For those with a 6th Gen - I have about 15 of those racks ready to go as well.

Cheers.

Ken

#45

Is it the same price for the 6th gen? And would the big Honda box be too big for those?? Would anyone have a picture of that big box on a solo rack??

Same price for the 6th Gen SOlo Rack. I have a 52 litre Topbox - don't think there are any larger - and it works like a charm.

#50

Anyone going to TMAC this year have one of these? I am STRONGLY thinking of ordering one, but would like to see how it sits and what kind of seat room is left with it on.

#51

Ken Shuart will be there with one. Check his out.

Thanks RazorWing,

Ken provides two 35mm and two 25mm spacers for the bracket. I used the 25mm and bought two 1/2 inch (approx. 13mm) spacers to lower the assembly a bit. I had to shim the left side a bit to make up for the thick mounting bracket for the Staintune pipe, but that only required a couple of flat washers. As an OBTW, I also cut a piece of 5/16 rubber fuel line and put it on the left rear edge of the bracket to make for a more comfortable hand grip when maneuvering around the garage, putting on the centerstand, etc.

Pictures are before, after and the grip.

Hope this helps.

That looks great! I really like the idea of using it for getting on the center stand! I already struggle with that a little and have been using the helmet lock.

I was able to get a Garagepro (JCWhittney) box on mine. I will post pictures soon! I can't wait to put it to use. I'm pretty sure this rack is capable of much more weight then the bike could even handle, lol.

I helped Kanadian Ken with some of the fit up issues. I agree, lower would be better, but as you can see from the last picture, the bracket gets really close to the bodywork. Every bike is going to be a little different too, so some might have a couple of millimeters clearance and some might touch. To be on the safe side, it had to be on the "more clearance" side of things or people might complain the rack touched their bodywork and scratched/gouged/wore the paint off, etc.

The rack is 1.5" shorter than the original too if you can believe that. It would be nice to be another inch or two shorter, but with thicker touring seats it makes it more difficult to get on and off. Since this rack is made to fit every combination that Ken could think of, some compromises had to be made.

I use the space between the rack and seat to carry a thin tank bag of things I don't care if they get wet (rain gear, sandals, etc) while on a big trip.

For anyone interested in checking a rack out, I will be in Indy this weekend for MotoGP with the rack on my bike.

#54

Glad it worked for you RazorWing.

IMHO this is the best method out there for putting a hard case on a Gen 5, so long as you travel solo of course. I completely understand the necessity for its height; even with my separate pillion there's not much room for removing/reinstalling the seat. And, as wera803 points out, the area below the bracket is usable for storage too.

Wera803, you and Ken did good. Enjoy Indy. BTW, where did you find 90 degree valve stems?

#55

BTW, where did you find 90 degree valve stems?

I used to run chrome 90 degree valve stems from www.patchboy.com part number 17-562

I switched to the 83 degree stems from www.kurvygirl.com a few years ago which are much nicer.

I didn't mean to hijack the thread, but thanks!

Wera803--What brand of hard bags are in your pic? I love their lines--I think they'd look great on the 5th-Gen I'm buying (in yellow, of course).

I have the Corbin Beetle Bags on my 5th gen. They aren't made anymore, but you can find them used once in a while.

Kperham may even have a set of yellow ones right now he is looking to sell.

Thanks for the information! I'll PM Kperham to see if that's the case (no pun intended); those are the best-looking bags I've ever seen on a 5th-Gen.
