The day after New Year's Day a friend of mine stopped by on his BMW and said let's go for a ride. Well I was just getting over the flu and still somewhat feeling the effects, but the temp was up in the mid 50s so I said what the heck, let's go. As I was backing the bike out of the garage my rear tire came across a coiled up hose, this caused me to stumble and the bike started to fall to the right while I was standing on the left side. It kept on going with me holding on to the right handle bar, it pulled me over to the other side trapping my right hand between the bar an the garage floor. After freeing my hand, my friend helped me right my bike, no damage done to the bike; I wish the same could be said for me, my hand hurt like hell. Not enough to keep from riding though, we did about 100 miles. We got a cold snap the second week of January with snow cover so I figured it was time. Fired up the bike and let it warm up, then I rode it around and put it away, so here she rest until spring. That should be OK though, I finally stopped by to see my doctor for a yearly exam and I mentioned the incident with the bike, since it was still swollen he had X-rays done, two broken bones in the hand. Oh well it was worth the 100 miles in January!
Ouch, too bad you didn't let go the bar a little sooner. Now you'll always know when the weather is changing from the dull ache. :D Let the doc help. Hope it feels better soon.
Lucky no damage to the bike!!
:)
How long will you be off for??
Get better soon....

Oh, no! Don't ever let go of the bike!
I am already back, no cast at all, I didn't get a Xray until 2 weeks after the incident. The bones had already started to heal, the doctor said they were aligned ok, if they were misaligned they would have had to rebreak and then put a cast on. Yea, never let go, it would have hurt me more if the bike was damaged. So what, my hand looks a bit funny. Thanks to all for the good wishes.

Here's to a speedy recovery and squeeze a tennis ball for the strength to return.

I kinda figured it's easier and less painful to fix the bike than my body, but it's your hand. :D

Like mother's milk...
I would be embarrased to show you my bike than, I would toss that sucker off a cliff before I took an injury trying to save it! Its got all kinds of beat up places from this and that - 55k hard miles and a couple of get offs. But she runs great! Get offs! Not stay ons and get hurts!
Slammer, you are absolutely right, if in case of accident on the road at speed I want to sacrifice the bike instead of my body. I suppose it was just that I felt so stupid, having it happen in my garage while backing up.

I can match that!
Last Sunday I took a friend (Hello Sally!) for her 1st ever ride on a bike. From her home we rode to the beachfront for a coffee, then through the city up to the Adelaide Hills along the freeway, then back down through the city. She was hugely impressed with my superior riding skills, I'm sure, as I occassionally brutishly gunned it past a car or two like Marlon Brando in that movie where he wears ridiculously tight trousers and a gay 'do . Only I'm no... doesn't matter. She was absolutely loving it. While parked at a set of lights in town, cars all around us, I turned over my right shoulder to chat to her, letting go the front brake handle...
..The bike started rolling back, she panicked and moved, the bike overbalanced to the right and... slowly... we fell over on top of the bike.
My lasting impression is of her throwing her legs up at the last moment to avoid getting squashed under the bike and landing on her back in front of the car behind us, legs way up in the air - most ungraceful!
We both stood up and pissed ourselves laughing.
Picked the bike up (she had to help - I couldn't do it on my own at that moment), stepped aboard, hit the starter button and took off, laughing under our helmets.
No damage, just readjusted mirror.
So you see, stic3, it can happen to anybody...
