Not sure this has been discussed before, couldn't find it on a search. If you were just going to go with one bag which would it be, tank or tail? I am leaning towards a magnetic tank bag because I can just grab it and run when I get off the bike, but would like to hear what the others think.
I got a Luggage Locker tail bag last year and like it, and used it to take stuff to work. I essentially left it on my bike, unless I was going for a longer "leisure" ride.
The only drawback is that it means I can't really use my rear seat cowl (unless I want to be constantly taking it on and off).
But for a trip it wasn't enough, so I got an Oxford Humpback tank bag.

I just bought a Cortech Sport Tailbag to go with my Oxford Sport Saddlebags. Fitting using the bungee cords is quick and simple. It also comes with side release buckles to match those on the Cortech saddle bags, so since I have the Oxfords I'm buying some matching buckles to connect the 2. I am also trying to figure out where to permanently install those buckles under the seat so that they supplement the bungee cords when using the tailbag on its own.
I must say I'm pleased with the Cortech although the quality is not upto the Oxfords.
I'm leaned towards tank bag as the only luggage if one is the number.
Tank bags are easy to get in and out, don't need to get off the bike to access the contents.
I don't like magnetic tank bags because that are not secure enough to lean against for long period of time.. I try to have my arms support as little weight as possible on long highway trips. My tank bag acts as a support memeber to lean against.
I'd recommend the tail bag as the tank bag can scratch your tank. That being said I do own a tank bag- magnetic (TourMaster) that works well. I just make sure the bag and tank are clean. The tank bag is used maybe 3 times a year and I have no scratches- yet.
It really depends on how you use your bike. Tank bags require removal or a flip over the handlbbars before filling up your tank. You also have to make sure the magnets stay free of dirt, otherwise they scratch your tank. But on a day trip with the girl, you would have to remove your tail bag and ask the girlie to wear a backpack, which sucks.

Good point. With me it more of the to and from work where I remove the bag when I get to where I am going.

Definitely go with the tail bag then. Tank Bags can be heavy if they are or the magnetic variety, and you have to be real careful where you set them down, they pick up everything.
Ventura makes a nice tailbag system. The rack mounts easily to the back of the bike, especially so on the 6th generation VFR. The bag slides on and off so it is as quick to remove / install as a tank bag, and you can still carry a passenger as well.

Oxford Sports tank bag. The magnetic flaps clip together tight when not on the bike, so they never get dirty. I used it all the time, never have any scratches. Also, you can attach a strap (included) to carry it over your shoulder, or unzip a flap and two shoulder straps pop out and you can wear it like a back pack. Comes with 3 side pockets for easy access to smaller stuff, and the main compartment is expandable. It's one of the trickest and best engineered pieces of equipment I've seen in a long time. Highly recommended.
If I only carried one bag, it would be a tankbag. wink.gif I never leave home without my Oxford Humpback. 2 Seasons and no scratches. It has a lot of space, plus it expands. It could easily hold a weekend's worth of "stuff".
