VFR Discussion Group -> Parry Sound

anyone know of a scenic route to Parry Sound from say Toronto? I'm usually in a hurry on the road but in no hurry to get anywhere if you know what i mean.

If you are interested there will be a few of us in your area that will be going. I know hwy 69 can be very busy, but scenic too. I'm open for any other routes there as well.
I edited my post thinking you where referring to the parrysound sport bike rally!!!! :goofy: It's all good though.

once north of Barrie - its all good, the scenery is great. I'll have alook on a map to see if there are back roads , but I think the 400 north of Barrie (used to be 69) is less of a super slab that the pre Barrie 400.

i will be going to the sport bike rally this summer i dont weather ill make it up therre before then

I would love to check out the Parry Sound Sportbike Rally some day. Be a good excuse to visit some friends and make some new ones in ON, too.

I lost my Parry Sound SBR virginity last year... cnech out my ride report.

The Parry Sound rally, the vicinity and the favored routes are very, very, very well "attended" by the Ontario Provincial Police ("OPP"). Two summers back, on one of the "riders' choice" roads, the OPP had bused in their cadets-in-training.

We rounded the bend and there they were -- thirty or so cadets (with their fully sworn instructors) set up on the road with a dozen or so of the various radars and ladars (lasers) they use. A field-trip training day as it were.

It was, for them, like shooting fish in a barrel.

They usually put two helicopters up too, weather permitting, for those who think they can out run the cars.

FYI 1: REGARDLESS OF WHAT ROCKET IS UNDER YOUR CROTCH, YOU CANNOT OUT RUN THE RADIO and/or A HELICOPTER.

FYI 2: MAKE SURE ALL YOUR PAPERWORK -- ownership, insurance, tags, etc. -- are in order and in your possession.

FYI 3: MAKE SURE THERE'S NO OBVIOUS ON-ROAD FITNESS ISSUES -- tire tread below 2mm, ULTRA BRIGHT (NON DOT) HEADLIGHTS, Blinker's blink, etc.

FYI 4: A NEW PRACTICE IS TO "INVITE" THE MINISTRY OF TRANSPORT EMISSIONS TESTERS TO THEIR ROADSIDE STOP PARTY. YOUR BIKE GETS ITS TAILPIPE SNIFFED. (They did this at WASAGA BEACH on Holiday weekends and "enjoyed" the results, though it's unclear to me if BIKE'S pass/fail like CARs.)

FYI 5: If you ever NEED the OPP, it's a free air-time province-wide call, at *-O-P-P or *677.

AFAIK, bikes are exempt from the Drive Clean emissions program (so far).

Sorry, I was NOT suggesting, NOT to go. It's a fun weekend and I've been many times.

A bunch of us usually book a suite at Deerhurst (http://www.deerhurst.ca at the Sport Villa rate, C$409, for four (4) people, kitchen, fireplace, etc) or rooms in the Holiday Inn (C$159 per (2) bed room) over in Huntsville (because all room's in Parry are gone). We go up Friday night, get a good night's rest, and then make a weekend of the rally and riding the area's many twisties. Hunstville is an hour (at posted speeds) away from Parry Sound via some nice twisties. And since most of the enforcement is South of Parry Sound watching the bulk of the traffic come up from the GTA (North bound highways), you just come in under the radar, as it were.

Just go prepared -- bike, papers and attitude -- so as NOT to have the day/weekend spolied because of a technicallity.

The true "targets" of the tuff-is-fair campaign are the NOISY bikes, the 220 km/h in an 80 km/h zone as well as those "driving" in the wheelie position on the highways and the like, which are typically the testosterone-in-overdrive-cannot-keep-it-on-the-track types. The foregoing tends NOT to be VFR riders (generally).

It's just that, in part, the courts have ruled that they cannot be too selective with their enforcement (e.g. CB600-RRRRRRR's at red line with their nose in the air only), so they cast a wider net and sometimes an unassuming VFR rider gets pinched on a technical violation.

Oh, fyi, earplugs recommended (at least available if needed). After a day's worth of the exhaust note thunder in the aggregate, the balance of the day and/or the trip home in a +100 db helmet goes down easier.

See 'ya there ... we'll be the pair of 2002 VFR's -- one red and one silver -- with the late-afternoon earplugs wearing the Deerhusrt tee-shirts.

I tented it last year. wasn't too bad. I had a buddy bring all my stuff in his truck
because he was trailering, and I rode up.


If I go I will probably be tenting it. At oastler lake just outside town.

Tenting at the parry Sound SBR the Corbeau way: The Foley (that's the name of the township just south of PS) Agricultural Society holds its annual Agricultural Fair (surprise) at the, you've guessed it, Foley Fairgrounds.

To raise funds for their fair, they open up their grounds to rallyists. (Actually, up to a few years ago, that was the rally headquarters too!) they ask $20 per person, on the honour system, to pitch a tent. Throughout the weekend, they also serve food for breakfast and supper -- you buy only the meal you want. Of course, the volunteers from the Ag. Society sell beer in the evenings but if you want to find out how many bottles of beer on ice you can put in your Givi top box, be their guest...

There are no showers on the site. You've been forewarned.

The other option for campers is the Provincial Park at Osler lake, just south of town (but north of the fairgrounds). Standard prov. park camping, which means showers, however that is *not* party central, as the wardens will strictly enforce rules regarding excessive noise. Make your reservations online (and soon) at the provincial parks website.

If you are heading up to Parry Sound from Toronto you should check out Hwy 13. This runs between Orillia and Bala. Instead of heading up Hwy 400, take Hwy 11 north of Barrie. Near Orillia you will be able to exit onto Hwy 13 (check the map). It is really just a back road, but it is 45 km of twisties with no staights longer than about 800 meters. Watch out for the railway crossings. This is one of the best roads I discovered last summer. When you get to Bala there are many great Muskoka roads to bring you the rest of the way to Parry Sound.

It is an awesome road - I discovered it last fall also. Lots of twisties (watch out for some decreasing radius numbers), and it's been freshly paved too!
