Friday - Arrivals

• Snacks, Drinks and Beer for afternoon arrivals at the Dancing Bear Inn
• Group Dinner at Mike's Pub - Hume Hotel - 422 Vernon St. - 7:30 pm

Saturday - Group Breakfast and Riding

• Group breakfast at the General Store Restaurant - front of Hume Hotel - 422 Vernon St. - 9:00 am (civilized start time) - buffet of scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, hash browns, fruit and coffee and tea in a private grand meeting room. 
• Snacks, Drinks and Beer for those who arrive back at the Dancing Bear Inn early or take short rides
• Group Dinner at The Royal Pub and Grill - 330 Baker Street - 7:30pm until 10:00pm - music (live musician - Bocephus King - blues, pop, rock) - food paid for by your fees (regular menu)

** Just have to confirm with the owners that the bookings are still on. Talking to them in Nelson (July 4-5)

Also, I've picked a 9:00am start for breakfast to allow us all to get a civilized sleep and start in the morning. Most of the rides in the area are 4-6 hours (tops). So that'll give you plenty of time to eat, prepare and head out with a small group.

Also, I know for 'type A' organizers that everyone wants riding groups and leaders, etc. The last meet went really well with riders making their own groups of 4-6 people and choosing their own routes along with places to stop for lunch in Kaslo or New Denver, or some returning mid-afternoon back to Nelson and picking a spot. I like things to be less regimented and planned and give people time to go see what they'd like to see with like-minded individuals in their group. Plus, I spend the entire year as a teacher organizing field trips and groups and this is the one time I'd like to just let things be more organic and work themselves out. :)

I'll post some basic maps soon and bring printed copies for everyone.

Parking

A couple of notes for when you arrive on Friday. There's parking on the front driveway, behind the building, and as things fill up, directly in front of the hostel on the street. There's also a parking lot across the street that is the Best Western's but I haven't confirmed if they are okay with us parking bikes there (although I did a couple of weeks ago without incident - do so at your own risk, or, ask them for permission - they're right next door).

Check-in

Check in with us on the patio for your swag bag, name tag and have a brew or drink and food on the patio. I'll be there about 2pm - official check-in is 4pm so take your time arriving - no rush.

Below is the list of folks and their rooms at the Dancing Bear hostel. Let me know if I've made any errors. You lucky buggers in the dorms have the whole place to yourselves. :)

We have had two previous meets in Nelson, BC that have been a lot of fun and had excellent turn out (25-35 members). It's been a few years since the last meeting and time to head back out to Nelson for some riding, good conversation and hijinks (Gary).

This meet we're going to try something a little different. The previous meets have had the majority of members stay at a local hotel which has been an excellent base. This time around I've found a great little hostel with reasonable rates that will allow us to book the entire facility for the entire weekend.
 
We will be staying at the Dancing Bear Inn Youth Hostel. It offers reasonably priced accommodations, good facilities and is in the centre of the town close to restaurants, pubs and sights. The nice thing is they have dorm style rooms for those who would like to stay on the cheap and private rooms or doubles for families or those who require more privacy. 
 
Costs for Accommodations
 
The event booking site is all ready to go. As much as I am a socialist, I didn't think it was fair to have everyone pay the same rate for dorms or smaller group accommodations. So I've created a slight tier structure. That way the more private rooms pay a tiny bit more than those in dorm rooms and we all cover the costs of the facility.
 
The building actually holds 43 but I've set the limit at 40 that way the dorm rooms will have three less people.
 
The rates are as follows:

• * Full ** Shared/Roommate ** – Twin" Rooms ($80.00 for two nights)- Twin Rooms info - sleep two on bunk beds are $80.00 for the weekend, select two from the dropdown menu for a room to yourself

• ** One Space Left ** - "Double" Rooms ($77.00 for two nights) - Double Rooms info - sleep two on bunk beds and the bottom bunk is wider which would allow for a parents and a kid and are $77.00 for the weekend, or it would work for someone who wants only one roommate (pay for two spots then), ** not enough room for three grown men**
• ** Full ** "Semi-private" Rooms ($75.00 for two nights) - sleep four on two bunk beds per room and have an adjoining room with the same set up and are $75.00 for the weekend
• ** 14-15 Spaces Left ** "Dorm" Rooms ($60.00 for two nights) - Dorm Rooms info - sleep eight people on four bunk beds per room and are $60.00 for the weekend
• ** If you desperately want a room to yourself  or you are sharing with your spouse choose the "twin" option and book two (2) from the drop down menu. Effectively, you would take two spots in one room - $150.00 for the weekend.
   
  For any of the room bookings select your preferred size and the number of people. One person = one number from the drop down menu. If you are booking for two in any of the room types select two. Hopefully that's pretty self-explanatory.
   
  It will be on a first-come, first-served basis. The early birds get the worms and the smaller rooms.  :goofy:
   
  Just got the final numbers from the hostel. Ideally if we aim for more than 25 riders it's a great deal. The total for the two nights is $2300CDN which amounts to about $75.00/person including room tax and GST - pretty good deal and about $50-60/night cheaper than any hotel in the area (our other hotel choice is $90+/night plus taxes and GST). If we have more than 25 riders it gets significantly cheaper (at 25 riders we break even). The hostel actually has accommodation for 40 people. Plus, we have the entire building to ourselves - there will be no other guests in the facility. Boss!
   
  I have stayed here several times myself on trips to Nelson or on the way home from longer rides. It is quaint, homey, clean and feels like staying in a guest house or with a friend. A really comfortable place. If you have stayed in youth hostels before you'll know the feeling and what they are like for accommodations - this is one of the nicest ones I've stayed at.
   
  The facility has a private patio/deck area with barbecue. There's a library and lounge area. Parking onsite with additional parking on the street and across the street in a parking lot. 
   
  For those of you who are used to having your own bathroom, you'll have to forgo one while you're here. There are shared facilities and showers, but I've never found that to be a problem, especially when you consider the price of lodging.
   
  ** I'll do my best with the rooms that are available to put people in single, double and multi accommodation on a first come first served basis. Given that it is not a hotel there is a portion of each of these rooms available and when they fill up we'll move to some of the larger shared room accommodations.
   
  Alternate Accommodation
   
  Those wishing to stay elsewhere have several options that are all within a short walk and in the town centre:
  • The Adventure Hotel - previous meet location
  • The Hume (only drawback is no air conditioning - it's hot in the summer) - very nice historic hotel and a great place for breakfast
  • Mountain Hound Inn - cool little historic building that has been turned into a hotel
  • Best Western - it's a Best Western, if you like the big chains for consistency (same everywhere)

  Last meet we did well from the kindness of strangers for donations of riding apparel, tools, books, gift certificates and the like. If you'd like to make a donation I'll put it towards gifts, gift certificates and the like for the prizes.
   
  Dinners and Gatherings
   
  On Friday and Saturday we'll assemble as a group. Have a few pops and dinner together and generally socialize. I'll let you know about where we'll meet and meals when I've done a bit more scouting around. I'll see if we can try some new establishments this time but as backups Mike's pub in the Hume has been a great meeting place before. More when I do some investigating (maybe as late as a spring ride out there).
   
  ** I'm also looking into the idea of having food ordered in or having a BBQ buffet right at the Dancing Bear Inn for the Friday night. I'll keep you posted.

That is remarkably close (within 10 miles) to the distance I rode to get to Montrose. It was quite doable as three ~500 mile days, but if you took four you could take the scenic route, have long lunches, take pictures, etc. I enjoy rural America (and Canada). Not much traffic, people are friendly and motels are relatively cheap. If the Canadian peso stays in the cellar (which it probably will; I think it's our new monetary policy), and Mike hooks up $50 CAD rooms, that's ~$38 USD. Cheap like borscht. More money for :beer: and gas :wheel:

I'm in. But go easy on me cause I am a VFRD ride virgin...well sorta. Went on a couple joint VFRD/VFRW rides.

Goig to be a busy time. End of May I am heading down to VFRW's R3 2016 if it is held. Hauling the 5th wheel to Winnipeg in June, then this ride

Just hope the bike holds up. It is over 196,000 km now. I didn't see the payment plans. Maybe tomorrow I will read over this in case I missed it. $75.00 a night is not bad, but it is a stretch to call that cheap. Regardless, I can sell myself on the CHilliwack street corners to raise the required funds

At my now-common pace of ~300 mile days I'm leaving mid-May for this meetup. I hope to stop in Franklin NC this time for T-Mac on the way there. Let's see; ~ 1100 mi to Franklin, then ~ 2500 mi to Nelson. Yeah, that's about two months of riding. One way. I'll be bringing two tents; one for when my usual tent is used up.

I think I'll hit Mexico on the way home. Hope to be home before next winter. :pinocchio:

I'm going to see if I can convince rjgti from Regina to go as well - riding company for the long straight stretch between Manitoba and Alberta. ;)

Hummmm. I'm thinking. I've taken the trans-Canada hwy before on trips to Banff for camping. I recall vast prairie/grasslands/farm fields. Great for making time. Not so much for scenery. But then No. Dakota and E. Montana is no better. And Canada may be cooler. But I'm old and slow.

Might have a few little suggestions that would improve the ride for you.

Just some small, alternate side roads just after you cross the border by Trail, then taking the back road via Ymir and Salmo to Nelson.

Shoot me a PM and I can give you some better routes that will be scenic while traveling through Alberta - Highwood Pass, Jasper/Banff through Icefields Parkway, Crowsnest Pass, etc.

The asphalt along the northern states is quite aggressive so your traction is great, but it is much harder on your rubber, so I think it would be an even trade off. If I were you, I would get off the TCH at Medicine Hat and take the Crowsnest through to Nelson. Unless of course, you intend on meeting up with Superfunc. Then again, he might agree to meet you down around Ft MacLeod.

My planned route is exactly as you've noted ... down to Lethbridge from Medicine Hat ... then Crowsnest to Nelson. Same route I take when snowboarding.

I'm still working on rjgti ... I think he needs to get a permission slip as well. :)

Cranks belong in an engine block. It takes a lot to piss me off so maybe I'm not that old. Heck, my brain still thinks I'm twenty-something (my body disagrees greatly though).

I think hanging around youngsters keeps me thinking I'm younger. I'm looking forward to hanging around you kids next summer. :)

For those of you coming from 'Merica or across Canada these are good routes for scenery:

• Highway 1A from Calgary to Canmore, or cut off at Seebe on the 1X to Highway 40 through the Highwood Pass through to Longview. (I can't map this on google maps right now because the highway closes in the winter).
• Highway 93 from Jasper to Banff or Canmore - Icefields Parkway
• Calgary through Bragg Creek, Turner Valley/Black Diamond and out Highway 22 to the Crowsnest Pass (https://goo.gl/maps/e5kMkvw3M7F2)

We have had two previous meets in Nelson, BC that have been a lot of fun and had excellent turn out (25-35 members). It's been a few years since the last meeting and time to head back out to Nelson for some riding, good conversation and hijinks (Gary).

I'm just about done with the registration information. Starting Tuesday, December 8, 2016, you'll be able to register online at: Eventbrite - Kootenay Hootenanny 2016.

• Registration closes on May 15, 2016
• T-shirt Orders close on February 29, 2016

That will give plenty of time to fill the rooms and make our deposit on May 15, 2016. T-shirts I'd like to get ready earlier just to make sure we have enough to put in an order in the first place.

A lot of interest so far. Once we start getting registrations it'll help allocate rooms and determine costs. If we have money left over I'll put it into food, beer (or both) or if there's enough left over, back to the members. $75.00 for each guest should easily cover everything for accommodations as long as we have 25+ attendees.

The event booking site is all ready to go. As much as I am a socialist, I didn't think it was fair to have everyone pay the same rate for dorms or smaller group accommodations. So I've created a slight tier structure. That way the more private rooms pay a tiny bit more than those in dorm rooms and we all cover the costs of the facility.

The building actually holds 43 but I've set the limit at 40 that way the dorm rooms will have three less people.

The rates are as follows:

• "Twin" Rooms ($80.00 for two nights) - sleep two on bunk beds are $80.00 for the weekend, select two from the dropdown menu for a room to yourself
• "Double" Rooms ($77.00 for two nights) - sleep two on bunk beds and the bottom bunk is wider which would allow for a parents and a kid and are $77.00 for the weekend, or it would work for someone who wants only one roommate (pay for two spots then), not enough room for three grown men
• "Semi-private" Rooms ($75.00 for two nights) - sleep four on two bunk beds per room and have an adjoining room with the same set up and are $75.00 for the weekend
• "Dorm" Rooms ($60.00 for two nights) - sleep eight people on four bunk beds per room and are $60.00 for the weekend

** If you desperately want a room to yourself or you are sharing with your spouse choose the "twin" option and book two (2) from the drop down menu. Effectively, you would take two spots in one room - $150.00 for the weekend.

For any of the room bookings select your preferred size and the number of people. One person = one number from the drop down menu. If you are booking for two in any of the room types select two. Hopefully that's pretty self-explanatory.

It will be on a first-come, first-served basis. The early birds get the worms and the smaller rooms. :goofy:

Its 3600km from there to Calgary, or 3 days @ 12hr/day.

Then you have to ride that back home,,.. wearing your bike out for nothing (some areas are nice).

If you're coming from Ontario, I hate to say it, but you're not missing much by riding until you get to Calgary.

NW Ontario is a gorgeous ride along the top of the lakes!

If you go stateside ... Michigan's UP has some incredible riding (H-58 is amazing) as does NE Minnesota (Highway 1 is super twisty technical).

The stretch between Winnipeg and Medicine Hat leaves much to be desired though. LOL

If I were riding from Winnipeg through to Medicine Hat again, cause I have done that, I could flip Depot Division the birdy as I rode by Regina That in itself makes that ride worthwhile.

Seriously though, I think the prairies gets a bad rap. Granted, if that was all I had to ride in every day, I may tire of that. But the prairies has its own beauty. I know just north east of Jeff, there is some really gorgeous country.

Yup, I live in a great area of of Manitoba for riding ... all along the Eastern part of Manitoba (North and South) is gorgeous terrain to ride.

Up north in the Parkland Region (Riding Mountain National Park, Duck Mountains, The Pas, Assessippi) is also beautiful country to ride.

Then down along the entire US border is the escarpment / Pembina Valley .... amazing country (this is the area I hunt in).

The TransCanada between Winnipeg and Medicine Hat sucks though.

That is definitely one of my favorite routes to Nelson. The brewpub in Northfork moved to Kettle Falls, they had very decent IPA.

Everyone paid up? If you are not staying at the hostel, you need to make your arrangements early in Nelson for Hotel rooms.  I don't remember which hotel it was, but a group of us prepaid for several rooms a few years ago in Nelson for our Kootenay Ride of 2010.  The hotel booked those room out from under us to another group.  I swore I would never go to Nelson again because of that but here I am, going anyways.  See what the consumption of spirited beverages will do to your soul?

I understand that the chances of anyone finding a bottle of open scotch at the bottom of my saddlebags are slim but I still wonder what the legal system has in mind.

Once you've opened you should drink it all. Problem solved. I'd help you drink it but I do not like scotch or any whiskey. Perhaps others will pitch in to help.

Basically the furthest point possible from the driver is the rule to follow.  Bottom of you saddle bags would be about as far as one can go on a bike.  Circumstances may dictate that the most inaccessible spot could be a back pack.  In my day, we would seize alcohol be believed was being kept for an unlawful purpose.  Typically that would be supplying to minors, or consuming in a public place.  That is not a charge.  It is a seizure and you have the right under the Liquor Control and Licensing Act of BC to make application to get that back.  Usually for a case of beer or a bottle of swill, it is not worth the effort.  But it is for the scotch I drink.

I seriously doubt that you would run into any difficulty this way even if police were to pull you over for whatever reason. Now of you were slugging it down while you were walking along the street, or carving up the corners, you just might run into some problems. Mine will likely be open unless I go out and buy a bottle especially for this event.

BTW.  Any of you who use mix will not be sampling my scotch.  A little ice is cool, nothing else.  Mix should be used in Five Star Rye.

I don't know what the fug happened there but I will try again.  I would like to do the extra day but will have to decline the Duffy Lake Road portion of the trip. If I had not already paid for this trip, I probably would not be going due to other things that have arrived on my scene. Besides, I am arriving back here from Winnipeg only a couple days before this trip so my time is also going to be in demand.

I'm not quite sure just when we return home from our RV trip to Winnipeg so timing for an earlier departure will likely be an issue.  I can stretch the return by one day but July 26 is my anniversary.  If I miss this years, then last years would be my last.

Speaking of noise.  Three of us went out for a ride up the canyon past Boston Bar.  I waited to join them when they arrived in Agassiz.  While waiting there, probably a dozen screaming loud drifter cars drove by over a period of a few minutes.  Talk about noise. 

Then out in the canyon, we were fortunate enough to get stuck in the middle of a group of about 10 harleys.  Even with ear protection in, the noise from them was awful.  Then get a bunch of them idiots in a tunnel, well, that was down right defining. I think we will be fine so long as we don't race around like a bunch of teenagers who have OD'd on Spanish fly.

Too bad you have to wait till July for the Hootenanny. My friend and I (a VFR 2000 rider) did the loop from starting in Balfour, east side of the lake to Creston, Salmo, Castlegar, New Denver and Kaslo yesterday. Beautiful weather and little traffic. And what traffic we encountered magically parted or turned off as we came up to them. I don't have pics, but it happened!

I've mapped my journey and it's ~1500 miles. My plan is to take US 12 and I90 to Coeur d'Alene to Newport, WA then WA 20 west, WA 31 and BC 6 north to Nelson. I figure I can do it at an old man's pace in about five days, give or take a week. :-)  I'll plan on leaving 7/15 and may get there early in order to have time to dress the deer for the Barbie Q. And check out Canada's IPAs. Can't wait to see all you PNWers.

Staying in the US is a good idear.

Faster Interstates and Cheaper Gas, specially in Montana, where even the smaller roads are posted 70MPH,,.. and the locals just consider that a Suggestion!

Be Careful climbing the Switchbacks outa (northbound) Metaline Falls.

The "pavement" is White,,.. cause there is a Cement Plant there thats been producing forever, and the surface is impregnated with cement dust.

I very strongly second this, myself and my buddy both went down on that same bend, heading down the hill. Those corners are super smooth and slippery.

I am thinking of leaving my place in Coeur d'Alene on Thursday morning so as to ride.... somewhere....... and have fun riding Thursday the 21st and then Friday up to Nelson....  Maybe up in NE Washington?? Maybe up by Yaak Montana and Koocanusa??

If anybody is coming this way and the timing works let me know and maybe we get in a day or so of riding on the way up.. I could be talked into camping too....

Bring your dually and we can form a group. Went to Sandon today. Really cool ghost town. VFRs could do it easily if it is dry. 

Yep - 1981 CBX 1000 (actually 1047 cc) non turbo with 56,000 original kms.  one owner and in great condition.  He had the dealer (Trev Deeley) install Ontario Moto Tech headers and exhaust when new, and the bike is loud and proud.  My neighbours are thrilled :goofy:  it sounds amazing!

At the back of Sandon past the general store on the right is the trail up to Idaho Peak - a little gnarly climb with switchbacks,  but I have done it 3 times now with no issues.  The views at the top are breathtaking and worth the slog up the mountain.

Have to get to Nelson again some day with the VFRd group ?

This looks promising - 14 day weather forecast for Nelson.  Better bring sunscreen :happy:

Maybe that can be one of the group rides. Still get to ride the Kaslo to New Denver stretch and it's only 12 km off the highway on a flat gravel road - easy peasy on a VFR if you take your time.

Dual Sport Riding

I'd love to do the Idaho Peak part (another 12 km) - couldn't manage it on the Varadero (too bumpy, bike too big, rider not skilled enough). There is also Buchanan Lookout which is a two-track (12km) journey to a fire lookout over the whole valley near Kaslo.

I will have a new riding 'tool' when I arrive. Alas, it is not the Africa Twin - still none available. But my new 'tool' might be better suited to these offroad treks. ;)

I haven't been to Idaho Peaks yet but I've been to the Buchanan Lookout a couple of times on my DR350. Here's a couple of teaser pics:

Not sure of our exact route up, but most likely taking the 3 to the 3A, up from Creston to the DH1 and coming into Nelson from the NE.

Looking at arriving sometime in the late afternoon.

I have my cell with me, but no reception at the cabin.

We're heading out today for Yakima & Newport, so you can always call or email until Wed next week.

Choco, a route suggestion for you guys to stew on:

if you are coming from Winthrop... after you cross Loup Loup Pass head up the valley to Tonasket, then look for the little roads that go through Havillah, Chesaw, Toroda, Curlew, then toward Orient, that will be a hoot! very scenic, no traffic, not extremely fast though...........not much cell service once you leave the Okanogan Valley

There is road construction 16 miles (27k) East of you on OR 20, that runs for about 5 miles (8k).  Delays may run up to about 20 mins.   Shouldn't be a big deal but always good to be expecting it.   More info here and here.

I do a lot of work surveying cell tower sites in Oregon, I'm getting to know the roads very well even around Newport, btw, where I drank way too much beer at both Rogue breweries last year on my birthday. Will be fun seeing you guys in a few days.

Looks like I'll be booking a tire re/re in Nelson for Friday, so I should be arriving early in the afternoon.

We're into the final week. Glad to see everyone is finding their way to the meet and finding groups to ride with. The itinerary is in the first post for meals and meeting times. We'll have some 'pops' and junk food on the patio for everyone whenever you arrive. I should be there around 2pm (early) just in case. I mentioned earlier I would get back to you guys with the possibility of a group from here riding together.  Reading through a lot of this and it seems people are going various ways which is fine.  Each has their own wants and wishes.

According to Google Maps, it is about 6h 15m from Chilliwack to Nelson.  SO any of you who are interested in meeting in Chilliwack we can ride as a group from the Time Horton's at 45793 Luckakuck Way.  Careful.  There are two Timmies within a block of each other this one is right next to the Best Buy and Superstore.  It is less busy than the one near the Shell.

So. If you are interested, we can use this as a starting point.  Kickstands up at 09:00.  A full tank from Chilliwack should get us to Princeton and we can take it from there.  No one leading the pack, just firing the starting pistol.  Ride your own ride but give or take, we should stay relatively close to each other to help out if any of us runs into difficulties.  Trouble with the law? You are on your own.

This should have us rolling into Nelson 4 - 5 pm.

There are lots of great roads just south. Nespelem to Inchelium /Gifford  over Chewelah mnt. Hmm this is got me thinking....??   would have a mutiny if tried to drag them on those roads lol

If your going through Kettle falls maybe we could meet u there for lunch  a cool  brew pub in a old warehouse called northern ales just.

We're into the final week. Glad to see everyone is finding their way to the meet and finding groups to ride with. The itinerary is in the first post for meals and meeting times. We'll have some 'pops' and junk food on the patio for everyone whenever you arrive. I should be there around 2pm (early) just in case. Hey Mike, What time are you planning on getting out of YYC? Looking through the posts, I haven't seen a Calgary group heading south?

I think I'm going to leave at 5am. I'd like to see if I can make it over Gray Creek Pass (gravel road). I'll be aiming to be in Nelson early, around 2pm. 

Now that is commitment!!!!! OK so I guess I will not be leaving at 5 AM, or 200 Km of gravel............. Planning on leaving around 8. If anyone else is up for it, drop me a line.

Parking

A couple of notes for when you arrive on Friday. There's parking on the front driveway, behind the building, and as things fill up, directly in front of the hostel on the street. There's also a parking lot across the street that is the Best Western's but I haven't confirmed if they are okay with us parking bikes there (although I did a couple of weeks ago without incident - do so at your own risk, or, ask them for permission - they're right next door).

Check-in

Check in with us on the patio for your swag bag, name tag and have a brew or drink and food on the patio. I'll be there about 2pm - official check-in is 4pm so take your time arriving - no rush.

Below is the list of folks and their rooms at the Dancing Bear hostel. Let me know if I've made any errors. You lucky buggers in the dorms have the whole place to yourselves. :)

My soft bags are mostly packed, Jim will be here around 8 am and off we go, all good roads from Monroe all the way to Nelson. Hope I can sleep well tonight, like a kid going to Disneyland. Jeff call me, but we should be in Marblemount around 11:30 to 12. We'll gas up there and head on into Winthrop, park our bikes and head to the Old Red Schoolhouse for some Ruud Awakening, which won the Washington beer fest IPA a few years ago. Great place, new owners, apparently dedicated to preserving the original recipes.

After a brief email exchange with the funk-meister I'm in.. Sadly I'm currently VFR-less but from what I hear I won't be the only one so I'm in good company. Leaving Hillsboro around 0600 tomorrow should hit Nelson around 1400 ish

Off work in a little under an hour, headed home to pick up the bags then on to Nanaimo and ferry to North Van.  Hopefully I'll be catching the 5:20 ferry so arriving at Mike's in Squamish around 8:30 or so.  We're taking the Duffy lake road tomorrow morning  :cheerleader: , Lilloet, Kamloops, then turning right at Monte creek down to Vernon and Fauquier.  Looking forward to seeing folks, almost time to play the "match the face to the name to the username" game.  I hope to do better this year.

Arrived home at 5:30 pm.  Was delayed about hour and half trying to get over I-90 Snoqualmie Pass due to heavy traffic and construction restricting traffic lanes.  Got a bit toasty sitting in stop and slow traffic under a hot sun.

Have a great ride. The roads I mentioned in Alberta were highway 40 from just after Canmore to Longview. If you're stopping in Banff or Lake Louise the Icefields Parkway is worth riding just up to the glaciers (about an hour). Safe travels!

Home safe and sound – 1,731 kms door to door.  Mike, thanks for everything…  and if the books do not balance at the end of the day, let me know and will PayPal you some $$

Great route home:  Nelson  → Kaslo → New Denver  → Nakusp → Needles ferry to Highway 6 (Monashee Pass) down to Summerland and took the Summerland to Princeton FSR.  Nice twisty pavement at either end and about 60 - 70 kms of gravel in the middle.  Lovely scenery and great way to end a wonderful weekend!

Great to see so many familiar faces and meet some new friends!  Thanks again Mike for everything – it was a great weekend.

Made it back in one piece 1/2 hour ago. Good trip across the province with Gary and Randy... now to rest.  Pics to follow tomorrow.

Fantastic event, kudos to Mike for doing a great job, have to hand it to you and can't wait for the next one.  Best of all was getting to meet up with a great group of people again.

Cageless, and I had some stop and go coming over Stevens Pass. It always bottles up in Index area, this time the Reiter Road cutoff was repaired so I snaked through that road and came out just above Startup, then inched my way to Sultan where I was able to turn off on the Ben Howard Road.

Great event Mike, and be sure to let us know if the numbers don't balance, I'll be happy to help out. It was fun riding with old friends and hanging out with everybody. Curry and I will start working on the Oregon trip, stay tuned.

There was a woman with a garden hose at the end of her driveway squirting the road when she heard a bike coming!!! WTF and I was doing the speed limit. Hit the hot springs out of Nelson, and spent a relaxing evening in Fernie at the ski hill. Came home today. Great seeing everyone and thanks all for making the trip memorable for my other half. Looking forward to the next and + 23 on the thanks to the funkmiester for all the planning. I have to admit I'm kind of on a down today. I've been looking forward to this since Novemember and now it's over all ready.

Like Polarbear, I arrived home last night. I think that we were somewhere around 2100km, which was plenty.

With the exception of the demise of the Kawasaki, it was a nice uneventful time on the road. I learned quite a lot, saw old friends, made new ones, and all in all it was a huge success.

Thank you Mike and Fiona and Niko for ALL your efforts. And of course: there is no world in which you should end up hold the financial bag on this one. Please count me in for fixing any overruns. 

I'm finally leaving the Dancing Bear. Headed to Revelstoke and Yoho. I joined Intl. Hostels to do more of these stays.

There are excellent hostels on the Icefields Parkway (Highway 93 just outside of Lake Louise), Banff and at Ribbon Creek in Kananaskis (Highway 40 - Highwood Pass is a beautiful ride) if you want to commune with nature for cheap.

I never did see the Hoser Lady. I took the 10:40 Ferry, so went down to Creston around 11:15 - 12:00

I was moving swiftly, by myself, but not in Hooligan Mode.

I'm stuck here at the Dancing Bear waiting for new chain/sprockets. Appointment Fri. Considering spending the winter here :------) (nose just grew six inches).

I could hear the Hardley Madeits start up from here.

Great to hear everybody has either made it home or are getting there steeds fixed up to do so..

:( besides one ninja needs a new heart. But was able to join the VFR world, i have to say it was a good outcome.

We made it home last night after 2800 km over 8 days...  For those that would like to see lots of Tammy's picks send me a PM with your facebook name so we can (BE FRIENDS).

Got home Sunday afternoon, incident free, with 2,708 km/1,638 miles on the trip clock.  Thanks to Mike for another great Kootenay meet!  It was fun meeting up with Randy and Al for the ride up to Nelson (despite the rain), and riding with Arman, Al, Kevin and Mark (in Reno) around the lake on Saturday.  I carried on from the Hootenanny down to Missoula, MT on Sunday where I spent six days off the bike hiking and touring the area. Interesting continent we live on: Temps in B.C. with our July-uary weather were in the 60-70 F range, a few hundred miles to the southeast, mid-80s to 100 F (last Friday) in Missoula.  There are some nice two-lane highways in northern Washington state (crossed at Nelway) and Idaho on the way down to Missoula--little traffic, nice scenery, small towns and a few twisties. On Saturday I decided to take the long way home and ride Lolo Pass since several of you (Arman and Paul among them) said: "If you're that close you have to do it."  With no GPS and a cursory glance at my AAA map, I headed south on 93 from Missoula.  Of course, I turned too early and wound up on a nice two-lane highway through farm fields that eventually spat me on to I-90 W.  Not ready to give up on Lolo, I pulled over, consulted the map and found a road that connected to Hwy. 12 just before Alberton, MT.  The road had no name on the map, and after about a third of the way, was indicated as two parallel lines instead of a solid line.  I chose to interpret that as multilane expressway.  :wink:   A couple of hundred yards down the road a sign read: "Primitive road 12 miles."  I figured I could always turn around if it got too bad.  After 12 miles of nice, two-lane paved road through woods and fields with friendly farmers waving at me from their pickup trucks, the pavement ended.  It was dry and the gravel was smooth, wide, and firmly packed so I carried on.  It turned out that the beginning and end of the gravel section (which was about a third of the distance), were fine.  There was just a bit in the middle where the road switchbacked up one side of a big hill (small mountain?) and down the other where the road narrowed, crowned (with rocks) in the centre, and had potholes and washboard for good measure.  There was no sand, however, and I was able to find a hard-packed path that was at least as wide as the tires.  So I off-roaded the VFR and lived to tell about it.  :fing02:

Lolo was good, sweepers on the east approach and some tight turns on the west, but there was a fair bit of camper and motorhome traffic, so I didn't get to take many of them at speed.  I saw the "Winding road for 99 miles" sign, but I've seen that shot so many times I didn't bother to stop and take it again.  It was a nice day, but my offroad adventuring and Lolo diversion made it a long one: 12 hours and 549 miles by the time I checked in at the Quality Inn in Okanogan, WA.  I had a nice leisurely day riding home on Hwys. 20 and 9 Sunday.  Again, lots of slow campers and Hardleys, but beautiful weather and cooler temps.

I found a shady spot to pull over beside the Lochsa River in Lowell, ID after riding the pass.

It was good seeing so many folks from the last meet and/or Montrose (Jeff, Rob, Kawasaki--now 'VFR'--Craig, Gary, Mike, Ian, David, Christian, Derek & Tammy, Terry, Tony, Quennel & Erin) and meeting a few new people too.  Thanks again, happy summer and safe riding to all!

That shot of the M is zoomed quite a bit so it suffers from (or enjoys, depending on your point of view) lens compression, making it appear much closer.  It's also hard to capture grade on roads and mountains in photos and video.  Suffice it to say it was bloody steep, with stairs at each turn in the switchback--like doing a stairmaster on the higher settings for 20-30 minutes. We carried on to the top of Mount Sentinel.  The middle third wasn't too bad, but the top was stairmaster time again. I wasn't drinking before the hike, but I definitely needed to replenish my vital bodily fluids afterward.  I believe we accomplished that at KettleHouse, located in a brick warehouse right next to the train yard.  The Eddy Out Pale Ale was just the ticket.

Good idea DH! I picked up a spare too for my journey back from the coast. Made it home without needing to use it. ;-)

I apologize for my late check-in; I made it home at 2am Aug 23 after 5700 mi.

I had a fabulous time with the crew in Nelson even if my dead battery caused me to miss the ride.

My BC tour went to Revelstoke from Nelson (after a four day wait for a new chain and sprockets ) then camped a couple of days in Yoho, a rainy trip to Banff, staying in the Backpackers Inn a couple of days after a very wet night at Two Jack Lake. Then up the Bow River Pkwy, back to Golden and on to Kamloops. Then the best of the trip: BC 12 to Lillooet and then BC 99 south. Stayed in Squamish then an afternoon in downtown Vancouver. Camped my way back to Nelson via CA 1 and BC 3. Main Jet did an oil change and I was on to the border at Eastport.

I was very sad to be leaving BC. Western Montana was great: US2 through Glacier NP and on east. Eastern Mont. and No. Dakota were the longest part of the trip. Brutal, straight-ahead, no scenery and no trees. A strong southerly cross wind made it even tougher.

The trip took it's toll on this oldie; it took me a week to recover.

Right now, I'm planning on making BC a yearly trip. Someone clued me to a first weekend in Aug. mc gathering that he called Sturgis BC. Mc s and music. That alone would be enough but add in the fabulous road, scenery and people and it's a no brainer.

So I will be back. Y'all have been warned.

P.S.1- No forest rat attacks were experience; I had to brake for a black bear and a crew of big horn sheep. Nothing scary. Hoo Ray!

You meet the nicest people on a Honda VFR! 

Met a sheriff too,  and he must also ride a VFR.  ;)
