I'm a dumbass. Two nights ago I needed to make a quick run to the store. Prior to going I needed to remove the side bags (E360s) and replace the seat. Anytime I move the seat I have to pull the top case (E460) so the seat will drop in place. The garage is cluttered so I perched the bag on top of the wingrack and did my thing with the seat. No problems, until I went to put my jacket on. I bumped the case with the jacket and dropped it to the garage floor. It was open (keys in the lock and unlatched) with the lid set in the closed position. It hit pretty hard on the side and busted the big tab on the lid used to latch it closed. It was a clean break, almost looks like I meant to cut it off. I would love to repair this, but suspect nothing I do will hold up in that area. Epoxy is my first thought, but I doubt it'll hold up. Expoy reinforced with metal plates and screws is another thought (but may not work due to clearances). Any other ideas?
At the risk of sounding like Mr. Obvious, have you tried contacting Givi USA and asking them if there are replacement parts available or if they have a repair service?
The yamaha, suzuki dealer on dorchester (by the airport) is supposedly a Givi dealer . The person I bought my vfr from got them to become a givi dealer so that he could by a set of bags.
Well thats certainly good news. Last time I looked there were no Givi dealers near us. Unfortunately that Yama/Zuki dealer gives me the creeps. The cashier (normally a young, attractive cashier) behind glass with a sign sternly suggesting you pay and move along kinda concerns me. I'll have to stop by this week and see whats what.
I'll also be calling Givi USA. To be honest, looking at how the bags are constructed, I doubt the lid hinge is "user serviceable." Also, I'm betting the majority of the cost would be in the gloss black finished lid, which is the part needing replacement. I find it difficult to believe a dealer or the manufacturer would repair that part of the case. That being said, I'm gonna look into it and hope for a pleasant surprise.
I've had GIVI bags on 2 bikes for several years, now. A few years ago I was unlocking them, and the keys fell out of my hand after it broke. It took no pressure at all to break the key, but they would not replace it for me. I bought a top bag, then two side bags. One lock, then two, plus three to make them all match. They wouldn't replace the one lock with a broken key stuck in it. I got it out, finally. Good stuff, but not great customer service as far as I am concerned.
