Damn! So sorry to hear about this... Best wishes for a full recovery. I too enjoy RG's wit and good humor. This is a real blow! We can't afford to lose any of our small female VFRD population!!
#5
Best wishes for a SPEEDY recovery, Grrrl. I am so sorry to hear of your accident.

Great youtube video. Looks like lots of love & support are helping you along.

Thoughts and Prayers from California...

Oh, grrrl. That sucks! sad.gif I hate to hear about that one of our so few female members got hurt. I wish you a fast recovery and good job on the pinata beating! fing02.gif (It realy looked like a chicken...)
#7
Hey RG. I am saddened to hear about your crash. I, along with the others, enjoyed your humor. God be with you. Heal soon and well.

Riot Grrrl, Nov 23 2006, 01:51 AMHello everyone, this is my first post since the accident.

Thank you all soooool much for the well-wishes, I get believe the amount of support that the motorcycling community provides... incredible.

I've just been moved today to 'The Royal Talbot' which is a rehabilitation centre, and i've heard only fantastic reports about the place.

I'm still not sure if i'll walk again, but I remain hopeful and positive.

Now that I have occasional access to the internet, I'll try to keep you all posted.

Thanks again for all the lovely comments, you're a wonderful bunch!!!

Cheers

Lenna.

Hey, Girl. Glad to hear you are doing better!! Think positive. Never doubt yourself. Even if you do feel like there is always someone that has your back. Ciao Bella

Hey guys... might not get much time to log on - there is just one computer in this place, and it seems to get quite busy... I wish I had time to respond individually to everyones comments, and the PM's too... You are all so concerned, it's amazing!!
I know that I am going to face some mighty big challenges in the near future, but I really think I will manage it.
am lucky to be surrounded by sooo much love and support that I am almost smothered by it!!!
#11
Good to see you well enough to post again. Best wishes for a complete recovery. smile.gif
#12
Dan, Nov 24 2006, 09:56 AMWhat do you mean? PT?
Physical therapy?
#13
Take that same club that you used on the pinata to the others that want the computer and I predict you will be allowed to use it whenever you want. biggrin.gif Best wishes.
#14
dr.toto, Nov 26 2006, 12:07 PMTake that same club that you used on the pinata to the others that want the computer and I predict you will be allowed to use it whenever you want. biggrin.gif Best wishes.

That'll show them for taking away from Lenna's puter time! Do they not know she is a celebrity here? Sheesh... this girl deserves the 5-star treatment and her OWN computer!

Lenna, it sounds like you've got breakfast in bed covered! Now, are you getting sponge-baths from a hot towel boy? tongue.gif fing02.gif

We're all anxious to hear from you when you get around to it! Work hard and heal well! biggrin.gif

Lots of love and prayers from the US!

Yeah, bloody slacker smile.gif

Lenna, I hope you enjoyed the visitors from OzVFR last week, its good when my minions follow orders laugh.gif
Hows the coffee out of that "collectors item" going?
Cheers

#17
Her attitude is, "I've either got to be chipper or I'm just going to be upset all the time."

Good attitude. Keep it up. cool.gif
#18
Dan: Thanks for the update!

Stewy: Thanks for promising an address! Looking forward to seeing it here and sending a couple cards to Lenna.
#19
OMG!!! What happened to all the posts?? ohmy.gif

Now I can't remember what my last update was!! sad.gif

it went something like this:

So you all know, the rehab centre is REALLY GOOD! smile.gif

The physio work I've been doing has been really interesting...
They teach me how I will be getting in and out of bed, as in transferring to and from the wheelchair, and how to stretch myself to reach my toes so that I can get dressed and put my shoes and socks on later... and just general stretching and flexibility for the parts that can't move without assistance.

I want to make myself do the splits but they're not keen on letting me do that... (yet) - hehehe laugh.gif

I'm starting to learn about the many and varied "life skills" that I'm going to need before they let me out of this place. They even have 'entertaining' things like "art therapy" and "relaxation/meditation" and "music therapy". I've always been into art and music, so I do enjoy those sessions. Yeah, so I'm keeping a pretty busy schedule at the moment, but still manage to squeez in the visitors that keep coming and coming!!!

And next week I might be starting Hydrotherapy... There is a big heated pool somewhere in this place, I know where it's near, coz I can smell the chlorine... Geez I don't think I'll be able to swim anymore...

I hope they give me some floaties!! blink.gif
hehehe

Speaking of mobility, I'm still keeping a little hope alive, that I might recover more than the doctors anticipate. But I think if it will happen at all, it might be when the 'spinal shock' settles down, which is after 8 - 12 weeks.

Heh... I just now realised, it's exactly 4 weeks ago today, since I crashed.

Wish I could remember what happened. How the hell do you low-side a VFR???? Oh well. Remembering wont make any difference.

Anyway, Just thought I'd touch base and let you all know how I'm doing... I'm still my usual chirpy self biggrin.gif
I didn't mean to ramble on so much though... hehehe...

Bye for now!!

Lenna.
#20
Lenna,

Still have this "Return To Sender" in my drawer, soooooooooo
you have an address?? biggrin.gif
#21
Lenna, great to see that you're so positive. You set a great example. In your position, I'd like to think I'd have half the resolve to make the best of things while working toward a full recovery. I hope you never forget that there's a whole lot of living to be done - no matter what your physical condition ends up being (eventually we all end up old, hairy [in all the wrong places], and slow anyway wink.gif ). Keep up the positive attitude and life will never be dull or lonely. fing02.gif

The mind is reeling with ideas on what DVD's to send her. goofy.gif

Yes, I have a television and dvd player in my room... I don't know what a VCD is though... hmmm...

It plays all sorts of 'burnt' disc though... I guess that doesn't really answer the question though, does it!

Hmmm.... I have a lap top computer that a friend leant me, will that work??

It's an M-peg 1 format. Not the best, but it'll get the point across. PAL and NTSB,...is that right? Veedub, will hook it up on your laptop, if they won't play on the DVD player. LOL. Look out,...you're gonna get a taste of my twisted sence of humor. MMMmmuuuhahahahahahahahahgahaha!!!!!!!!

Ever see a Don Hertzfeld cartoon? (Noth'n dirty),...(I doo have some tact). LOL. Prepare for a night of gut wrenching laughter!

If you have a laptop that can play DVDs you most likely will be able to play VCDs as well. VCD is VideoCD. It uses the smaller CD capacity to store movies instead of DVD. Of course there is no surround sound and the picture quality is closer to the VHS than to the HD TV...

Would you like a copy of the OzVFR DVD? You probably wont know the people in by the faces it but they're all your mates!
I'll burn off a copy tonight and sling it your way.

Hi Riot Grrrl,
I am also one of the few female VFR riders on this forum. Wanted to say that it sucks crashing, but with your attitude it sounds like you can make the best out of everything. VFRShark and myself hope that you continue with your recovery and hope that your holidays bring you nothing but the best. Take care and keep us informed of your progress. Like others have said we certainly appreciate your sense of humuor!!

Hi guys,

I see Lenna hasn't been back on lately, so i will give you all quick update, and tell her to get her act together  , geez i dunno, she sleeps in everyday, has meals brought to her, doesn't have to get up for work and yet she says she doesn't have time pfffft

Firstly thanks to those that sent cards, she has recieved a few from different members (sorry can't remember who unsure.gif ) and geez, can't you guys spell her surname name it's Nightingale not Nightgale (doh)  "stupid americano's" goofy.gif ah well they made it anyway.

Whats been happening isn't much atm, because she has a broken arm and she had an xray yesterday to have it checked and to get a better idea of when she can start to put weight on it. So yeah will hopefully find out later today the outcome of that xray and then they can start planning the rehab process.

Anyway i will let her fill you in on her daily actitivies.

I just wanted to say thanks for the support and the cards

Cheers stewy

heres my orginal post that i first posted on netrider when the accident first first happened back on the 4/11/06, but i think when VFRD erver crashed it lost all the posts on this thread. Hopefully this fulls you in a bit more on what happened. There are threads on Netrider, Ozvfr and weekend rider, if you want to re-read through all the updates that i posted to get to this point in time (sorry just don't have time to go through and find them all now)

As some of you already know Lenna (Grrrl) has had an off on the spur on saturday morning.

The details of the crash remain unknown, as she can't remember what happened and there were no witnesses (Please if you have an opinion on this keep it to yourself. As there are more serious issues, Lenna and her family are having to deal with.)

Damage from the accident as it stands atm, is that she has broken her back in 2 places and severely damaged the spinal cord. The full effect of this damage is not yet fully known. Lenna also has a broken left arm.

Yesterday afternoon she under went surgry to have plates fixed to both the spine and the arm. It was a long but from what the surgeons say very successful surgry and they are very happy with the outcome.

This has been a very trying time for Lenna and here family, because as you can see, we are facing some serious injuries. In saying that those that know Lenna well, know she is very positive woman and is still in that frame of mind.

Lastly, i would like to thank all a few guys that helped both Lenna and myself during this time.

All the guys on the ride, you guys were wonderful in the support you provided both myself and Lenna up there, Loz & Cejay and who every else (sorry can't remeber) for getting my bike back to Healsville, Dean (pnut) for getting my bike home, he sorted out everything (without hassling me). Matt (foxy) and kim for everything you guys have done. Over the last 48hrs.

Also to the mods, i know this has probably been diffcult and you have probably been back under the firing line, for removing posts about this topic, but I know Lenna and her Family appericate it.

You guys have no idea how wonderful you are and how much both Lenna, her family and I appericate what you have done.

I know alot of you have sent sms's and i have tried to reply to all, if i haven't it's only because i haven't had time, and have been dealing with more important issues, but i have passed all of them onto both Lenna and her family.

This is going to be a very long and hard road to recovery for her. Lenna is very much looking forward to visitors, probably from today on. In saying that, due to the amount of time she will be most probably in hospital and rehab. i would like to try and space out visitors, ie, so she doesn't see everyone in the first 2 days, and then nothing for weeks, and this also applies for flowers, as i know the room is full atm (I know this wouldn't be the case) but this is just what her family are a bit concerned about..... If you would like to visit, her, whether you know her or not i know she would love to see you.

To try and control (for the above families concerns) if you can call me on my mobile, (those that have it first) she would love to she ppl, from today onwards.... I will also put my number up in a couple of days for thoses of you that don't have it yet and give out the details of where you can come and visit.

I will continue to update as i know more.

Regards Stewy

The injuries are still the same, although she has slightly more feeling, in her waist area.

cheers stewy

Well... there's a ray of sunshine through the cloudy skys!! biggrin.gif Kinda figured she was a bit busy with rehab and resting to heal all that needs healing. Thanks for the update Stewy... (My little care pack did make it to her before she headed to rehab... Pheeewww.... huge sigh of relief. I have the rehad addy and will send another care pack after the holiday rush settles.) biggrin.gif

Is there anything specific that she enjoys other than motorcycles? Is there anything that you think of that she might need? That would be helpful for those of us who want to send a little something who can't pay a visit in person.

Thanks for the update Stewy... Lenna's road to recovery is still in our thoughts and prayers!

Thanks for the updates, stewy. Let's keep the cards, etc. going!

blah i would never do a thing like that tongue.gif oh ok maybe, but it was all Lenna fault, if she hadn't crashed i wouldn't of been as stressed as i was and then i wouldn't of needed to spell her name correctly..... so yeah thats my story and i sticking too it..... Hey, I thought it was only us ugly Americans that blamed the victims! goofy.gif I dropped my VFR in my garage a few weeks ago. Damn, must've been the bike's fault. Stupid bike! pissed.gif tongue.gif

How you do'n, gurly grrrl?

You gett'n pumped up? fing02.gif

FINALLY sent the discs. LOL. "fun with the wheel" #1-#4, you may want to watch later. Lots of VFR ride vids., but there's a lot of squid.gif -ly fools gett'n busted up. Keep a finger on the >> button too. There are some vids, on the other discs, that may not interest you. (Some clips from ogrish.com, and such).

If the DVD player, doesn't play it, you should be able to set WMP to play it, by adding VCD or MPEG1, in it's preferences. One can always find a free version of Power DVD, on line also.

Keep that a$$-kick'n attitude! You rock!

Trav.

*peeks in*

HELLO THERE!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the cards you sent guys! They sure did brighten up my day :-)

VFRiderGal, I can't thank you enough for the package you sent... that was quite early on, and was such a surprise that it made me a little teary... I still can't believe the kindness, caring and generosity that comes from the motorcycling community, it seems to be the same all over the world, and it's mind-boggling!!

Dutchy, your card was hilarious - that picture of your son still makes me giggle, very cute!

TimC thanks for your card too, very apt I thought :-) Your well-wishes are much appreciated!!!

Hobbie1dog thanks go out to you too, it's amazing to me that people even take the time to post a card to someone they don't know... well, you all kinda know me, but haven't met me, I think that's what I'm trying to say :-S
So yeah, thanks to all of you for taking the time and making the effort for little old me, I'm truly humbled!!!

Shit, I hope I haven't forgotten anyone!!

hmmm... news...

They let me out of here for Christmas... twice!
I went to the family Christmas dinner at Adams parents house on Christmas eve, and I had such a good time!! It was sooo nice to be out, and be surrounded by familiar people, in a familiar place... It was my first outting without being accompanied by nurses or other staff, so it was nice to be free of all things hospital!!

I went home to my parents house for Christmas day, and that was just fantastic... sitting around the table with all my brothers and sisters (yes, there are six of us, my parents might be rabbits?? ah, that's why I like lettuce so much!!)... where was I?? Oh yes, sitting around the table for a lazy breakfast, chatting away and catching up on everyones latest gossip... It felt so natural... normal... I kind of forgot for a moment that I couldn't get up out of my chair, or that my chair was even on wheels, unlike the other chairs around the table...
I didn't want to come back to the rehab centre, I wanted to call and say I was being held hostage or something... hehehe...
Benji, my poor doggy didn't want me to leave, that was pretty clear - I was sitting in the front passenger seat of dad's car, Benji was half in the door, sulking with his head in my lap. It took two men to drag him away from the car!!
The boys complained about how heavy he was, so hard to drag away... I can vouch for that! Rotweilers are quite heavy, but they should try getting him into the bath!!!

So I've settled back into the routine again... I'm slowly making progress, I wish it was happening faster, but that's probably because I'm impatient, I want everything NOW DAMMIT!!! ;-)

My arm is getting better, and "partial weight-bearing" is now allowed, so I'm pushing myself around in a manual wheelchair instead of the 'Timmy-style' powerchair...

Just today I learnt how to pop wheelies, so that I can get up a small step... they're finally letting me get into the strength-building stuff too, so I'm happy about that even though I still want to do more than they let me.

I'm still as up-beat as I was from the start, and I'm hoping that it all doesn't come crashing down on me like a tonne of bricks later, but I've got this far now, and there are no bricks in sight at the moment!! :-D

Anyway, that's enough from me for one day, I really just wanted to say thanks to you all for your amazing support, but somehow I managed to waffle on for ages!!

I hope you're all well, and I wish you all the best for a happy and safe new year.

Cheers,

Lenna

YOU GO, LENNA !!!

I am soooo happy you had a nice Christmas! Girl, I keep thinking of you and wishing I could do something for you - but then I read your posts and realize that you are the strongest person I have ever met (even though only through net). You are trully my role model! I believe there are no bricks in sight for you - and we are here for you anytime you need us. Until then, I am sending you my warmest wishes of happiness and smiles and will continue on with my daily 'thinking of Lenna' routine ...

Hello again, this will be brief, I'm off to physio shortly...

Just wanted to say hi to you all, it's been a while since I've been on and posted.

I'm doing well and making progress. They have finally given me a 'discharge date' to work towards, so the countdown is on, and my magic number is 06/04/07.

ie: 6th of April for you whacky people that put the month before the day like mm/dd/yy

hehehe...

I'd better get going now, I'll be back later *grin*

Hey, Grrrl! Great to hear from you! Glad to hear they've given you a release date. That has to be encouraging for you, just knowing you'll be out of there before too long.

Keep kickin' arse in rehab and keep in touch!

Hey Riot Grrrl,
Just read about your story - just wanted to add one more voice of love & support. Can't imagine what you're wrestling with, but as has been said innumerable times in this thread, you seem to be pretty extraordinary, and I'm really moved reading your posts.
All the best, and another source for prayers & goodwill. I'm a Yank from Colorado, but I worked for a few months on the Mornington Peninsula below Melbourne, and have such wonderful memories of Victoria & Melbourne. You're in a wonderful, beautiful part of the world, and I hope recovery continues to go well.
Obviously good humor & spirits are always welcome, so here's a couple websites that made me smile, hope they do the same for you.

Go here and catch up with Dale's thread on our Advrider forum. He is a great source of inspiration to all of us, and might be to you...And you to him.

Hola Riot Grrrl.

You don't know me and I don't imagine you've ever read any of the three (3) posts I've put up on this website. They're non-contributing (asking for info) posts so not of much use to anyone but me.

I'm an ex-pat currently living in the south of Spain and have only just seen this post regarding your "new life". My excuse is I'm relatively new here and have little time. I've seen a lot of motorcycling accidents in my time as I was born into a motorcycle-enthusiast family, some of them much worse off than others. It never ceases to amaze me how most seem to get back up and get on with it. It must have a lot to do with the reasons we're attracted to bikes in the first place.

You, on the other hand, are an inspiration to all of them. Your keenness to keep sinking your teeth into life's cake is awesome. In fact, you take the cake!!! I wanted to encourage you to keep on keeping on, but your so god-damn positive it almost feels like you don't need someone "rootin for ya". (Don't these yanks realize what they're saying could be taken the wrong way?)

The reason you're story has touched me enough to write more than just a few words of encouragement is that I spent a year encarcelated in bed with a spinal problem. Couldn't sit for long, in the end couldn't walk, I slowly lost control of my "waste disposal unit" and was in excrutiating pain. I lost my job, my savings, my sporting hobbies (never will go windsurfing again), my better half gave up on me, everything.

Wish I had read your posts back then. I could have used the inspiration. I was so negative, scared and depressed. I knew I shouldn't have been, that it wouldn't help. You never know how you'll react until it happens to you. Slowly, I managed to grow out of that attitude, I guess on finally coming home from hospital and several operations only to be kicked out by the "better half" was what did the trick, but I'm as sure as hell that my attitude held me back from recuperating sooner. Big time!!

Three years later I'm back on a bike. I just bought it a couple of months ago. I'm sure my neurosurgeon would kill me if he found out. A 1998 VFR800 silver and black 5th gen. You never know, you too may get back on one day. You just never know, and with your attitude...

Besides, it doesn't really matter if you do or not. Let's be real. That's not the moral of the story. What matters is being happy with what you've got but wanting more, and not being scared to try. Attitude counts, no matter what they say.

So you just grab life by the balls!! You hear me?? Squeeze 'em good and hard until God begs you to stop, and then some.

There, now I've told you my life story. Maybe I shouldn't have but, there should be no taboos. Talking always helps.

That was incredible. I'm speechless. Those are some of the most inspiring words I have heard in ages. Free will gives each and every one of us the choice to be miserable and feel sorry for ourselves while facing challenges or the choice to be thankful for what we have and ready to tackle whatever it is we want to achieve. You can't change your past's, but you certainly can control your future!

Rock on, Lenna & Aus..... rock on!

No worries. I don't think anyone thought you were eclipsing the thread. On the contrary, it's terrific to hear words of encouragement from someone who's been in the same situation and came out a stronger person. Thanks for sharing your story. Powerful stuff.

As they said here (in the US) in the '70s, Grrrl, keep on truckin'!

Auspaol,

It was wonderful, to read your story and i am glad to hear things are going so well for you now. I think TimC summed it up nicely, reading these stories ( i do believe) help others in these situations, as they can see others have gotta through these rough patches.

Lenna is a wonderful woman (and those that have had the chance to met her would agree) and sure does have a love for life like noone i have ever met before. In saying all this i know she appericates all the support, and even though you may not see much of her posting atm, i can asure you all that she does check in and read all the new posts.

Anyway i just wanted to thank you all and to those that have shared your stories, sent cards/gifts. I know lenna appericates it all.

Cheers Stewy

That was 4 days ago! I don't visit here much anymore, so I missed this thread...well...until today. I have to say that I didn't want it to end. Your attitude is absolutely incredible. If something like that were to happen to me, I'm not sure I could be so strong. You are truly an inspiration to me, and I wish I could have an attitude more akin to yours. I believe you will fully recover, and though I'm not much of a praying man, I will definitely throw a few your way.

#114
GET WELL SOON AND HANG IN THERE.... fing02.gif
#115
Still in the prayers Grrrl............................ wub.gif ...............post up soon as possible................... fing02.gif
#116
Yikes... I know I said I'd be back... ummm... 3 or 4 days ago, but sheesh! it's been bloody busy lately... And it doesn't help that the boys in here have discovered an internet game called 'Stick Cricket' and ever since, it's been almost impossible to get near the only computer on the ward!!!

I was hoping to have some pictures ready to post up, but I can't get them off my ipod and onto this computer, as it wants me to re-format the ipod which means I'd lose everything that's on it, including the photos (I think), so you're going to have to wait! *pokes out tongue*

But for a very quick up-date, most things are going very well now... I can now manage the shower by myself, dress myself all those kinds of things... My physio says I have "ace hips" (LOL!) but unfortunately she's not referring to my figure, but my flexibility! Apparently most people can't reach their toes, let alone a foot beyond?? (by foot, I mean 12 inches, that was confusing!)

The only thing I really want to do but (still) cannot, is transfer myself (without assistance) from the bed to the wheelchair and back (or into a car etc) because I'm still not allowed to wheight-bear through my left arm. Grrr!
All through the beginning of the year I was looking forward to getting my arm xrayed and the end of January, and getting the 'go-ahead' to use my arm fully once again. The orthopaedic surgeons reviewed the x-ray and decided to restrict my wheight-bearing capacity for an extra 4 weeks... *cries*
So now I'm waiting til the end of February (not far now!) for the next x-ray and hope they give the nod!

Ooops!

Just got in trouble, meant to be in my 'wheelchair skills' class... seeya!!

Oh, I managed to swap times with another patient... lucky!
*grin*

So anyway, I was expecting to be leaving the rehabilitation centre on April 6 but that date will have to be extended now, since I have to wait a little longer to fully use my arm.

It was a pretty bad break. I guess a more suitable way to put it is that the bone was shattered, and so required putting back together a bit like a jigsaw puzzle, and I now have 12 pins and a plate along the upper part of the bone, holding it all together. I prefer to call it scaffolding. *wink*

Anyway, I'd better get going now... and I'll work on getting those pictures uploaded somehow. There are some pictures of the said scaffolding too... heh heh...

Hope you're all well

Lenna.
#117
Riot Girrrl, Lenna,

it is so great to hear from you! Good luck with the upcoming x-rays! Let your bones be stronger than a steel and your hips flexible-er than ... than... uhmm - sorry - I got no publishable ideas right now rolleyes.gif

Martina - not only Czech chicks rule, Ausie chicks rock !!!
#118
Thanks for the update, Lenna. Did you at least get titanium in the arm?! Just kidding. Surgical steel is probably the norm, but I'm guessing here since am I not a doctor, nor do I play one on TV. tongue.gif

Are you getting to go home once in awhile? I remember how happy you were to be home for a couple days over the holidays. You've been at the rehab centre (Notice the Brit-style spelling from an American!) awhile, but I don't think one can ever be as comfortable and relaxed as they are in an old familiar place like home.

Here's hoping things keep going well. beer.gif Glad to hear you're still fighting. Keep it up!

An intrepid newspaper reporter was interviewing a motorcycle accident survivor - Question: To what do you attribute your survival? Answer: I ride a VFR, and practice moderation in all things, including a can of Foster's (or insert choice of barley libation choice here) a day. Q: All right then, how's your general health? A: Like I said, I ride a VFR. Q: Okay, have you ever been bedridden? A: Well, sure, but don't put that in your newspaper!!

Go Grrl!

Hey all... (Lenna, hope you don't mind me updating everyone ~ I know you're busy and have limited computer time.)

I just got a letter via snail mail from Lenna, so I thought I would update ya'll a bit.
She's been given the go ahead to use both arms fing02.gif and is pumping iron frequently. She's looking to Arnold Swarzenegger's biceps for inspiration... (ok she didn't say that!) She also said that the rest of her rehab is going well. fing02.gif Once out of the rehab center, she's headed to her parents home. But, she said that she might be in an apartment for a brief period of time, if the modifications at their house aren't complete when she's released. She will be able to return to her same job. In fact, she just resumed a course that is needed for that position and (hopefully) she'll be able to complete it before returning.

Here's a short excerpt from her letter that I wanted to share:

"If I learn nothing else from this life-changing experience, I have most definitely learned that I have more love and support around me than I ever thought possible, and certainly more than I would have otherwise known. In a way, it's a sad thing, that it took such a nasty accident for me to realize tha tthe love and support was there all along... I just never knew it. And WOW! The support from the motorcycling community is absolutely incredible. That goes for the locals AND the international motorcycling community too! I guess it says something about the type of person who makes the choise to ride. I have met some of my very closest friends through riding and of the hundreds of people I have met, I don't think I could find a bad word to say about ANY of them, and that is an incredible thing as far as I'm concerned!"

I've gotta say that Lenna's strength and attitude are superb. Lenna, I sure hope I get the pleasure of meeting you someday!!

Thanks for the update, 'Gal. (And BTW, I love your latest avatar!) I'd like to send another card or letter, if Lenna can let us know how much longer she'll be incarcerated, err, I mean in rehab!

Congrats on finally being given permission to use both arms, 'Grrrl! Hope you make California's "Governator" jealous!

Awww... Fanks for updating everyone for me Gal, it's been difficult to get around to updating everyone myself!!

I do have the luxury of having a friends laptop on loan, so I'm currently putting together a big 'general update' at the moment which will comprise the 'whole story' (so far), including pictures...
The laptop is not connected to the internet so I still have to try to get onto the one and only puter to transfer and post the update on here...
So that will hopefully make it here soon... But I'm not giving myself a deadline, that seems to be a sure-fire way of making things take longer!

But just to give you all a brief update:

~ All is going well now and I'm making progress much faster now that the restrictions on my arm have been lifted...

~ I think you already knew that I was expecting to be able to fully use my left arm by the end of January, but after the surgeons reviewed the xray they decided to make me wait another 4 weeks... So I was expecting that would extend the 'release' date a little...

~ I have almost seen a complete cycle of other 'in-mates' now that I've been here so long!

~ They have indeed set a new 'release' date - 10th May

~ I'm still keen to get out of here, but I'm not as desperate to leave as I once was - I have my own room now so it makes my time much more bearable...
- No more TV's blaring in competition with eachother...
- No more dreary meditation tapes playing all night...
- Nobody who needs to have the door open all night so that the light streams in... YAY!!! Now it's dark and quiet at night time *grin*

So there you have it... I hope that keeps you all going for a little while at least... *Wink*

I'll try my hardest to get back online soon...

I hope you're all well, and hope you're bikes are all out of hybernation now too... *grin*

Bye for now,

Lenna

Just got a nice thank you card from Lenna for my card that I sent her. Neat stuff getting a card from Aus(down under). Thanks Lenna She sounds in really good spirits.

G'day there!

Long time no see partly because I'm a slacker sleep.gif (there is no emoticon for 'blushing') and partly because someone has been teaching the other inmates how to play games on the only computer, it's becoming more popular pissed.gif

so yeah, I'm still here in rehab Things are going along nicely for now - I'm gradually getting stronger but it's hard work!
I've got lots of pictures to post, but I haven't figured out how to get them from the laptop onto this computer. I think it's about time I invested in one of those memory stick thingo's... LOL

Well I've just about seen the turnover of a whole ward of other inmates... I guess because my broken arm held me up with physio for some time, which in turn means my sentence is longer than the average... But they are telling me that my discharge date is expected to be mid May...

I get out almost every weekend so that's keeping me sane... Some might beg to differ wacko.gif

I'll be learning to drive with the hand controls soon - I can't wait for that, it'll make a huge difference in terms of independence...

*does a little dance*

Looking forward to car shopping too - I have to sell my car because it's a manual and I need an automatic now... I never thought I'd ever own an auto... bleah! But now that you can get auto's with gears as well anyway so I'm not so put off the idea now...

that's enough for now... time for 'Art Group' biggrin.gif

This kind of hand-operated technology is nothing new. Back in North Queensland in the early 90's I was once the proud owner of a 1962 Dodge Phoenix (extra-wide chrome mags, either 302 or 351 windsor V8 can't recall). I mention this for one very pertinent reason. Apart from being one really sexy car, it had bush button controls on the dashboard, it was an automatic, but you could choose each gear separately as well. God damn it was a fine looking vehicle, even if it was a car, black chrome exterior, blood-red velvet interior with mother of pearl and ivory detailing. There were two in my area, but the other was the Chrysler copy. Looked a lot cheaper and flimsy. Anyway RIOT GRRRL, keep an eye out for one of these, they're hot, sweet, ever-so-comfy, WILL get you laid and it wouldn't be difficult to get a hand-operated accelerator set up!!!!

Keep on keepin' on, you fighter you!!!

Oh yeah, I forgot that VFRD is full of engineers!
I remember one person in particular telling me he could basically build a rocket ship if all the parts were dumped in a heap in front of him!

I need to recruit an engineer... see I have to get myself some new wheels, in more than one sense of the word.
Not just the car, I'm also in the process of choosing a wheelchair.

I'm getting frustrated with the manufacturers. There are different types of chairs, with all sorts of functions and features.
I even get to test ride them wheel.gif
The problem is that they're not very flixible when it comes to the specific things I want... Certain chairs have certain features, and if they don't come with other features then it's just tough luck. They wont mix'n'match. But if you could see it, you could see how bloody simple it would be! Anyway, I reckon it a rort. It gets a bit complicated... But what really gets me is that they get away with charging around $10,000(AUD) for a manual chair!!! God knows what they charge for the motorised ones! pissed.gif

You'd think that for that kind of money, they'd be a little more obliging. It's such a basic structure and I keep thinking 'if this was a motorcycle, I could get anything I damn well wanted' so I need to MAKE them see that modifications ARE possible...
I could harp on about this for half a day, so I'm going just stop there.

And don't worry, I don't have to pay for the wheelchair because I had a road accident, so I get compensation... I feel sorry for the people who've had spinal cord injuries from other types of accidents, they have to fork out for their chairs. Makes me mad pissed.gif
I don't want to say I need a wheelchair, and then find 50 of them have been sent in the mail LOL (like the memory stick thing)

hehehe... I have to go, there's someone else waiting patiently to use the computer.

Bye for now!

Rehab isn't that bad now... I've settled into it. I also get out and about almost every weekend and some weeknights just for something to do... I can order in food if I feel like it, or if I can't stomach the slop they serve here some nights... I can have a barbecue any time I want, and invite a whole bunch of people and nobody seems to care... I go out to parties and come back at 3.00am and nobdy bats an eyelid...

All I have to do is turn up to my therapy sessions which are run during standard business hours, so it even fits in with everyone elses schedules (as in friends, family, and Adam) I look forward to doing physio... weights... it's all making me stronger and more mobile so I don't see it as a chore at all. I say things like 'they're letting me out on 'day release'' and talk about my other 'in-mates' but it's really only in jest.
The other in-mates are great though... there's always someone around to chat to, and we're all in the same situation so we compare notes and bounce off eachother... I guess the best way I can describe it is we all have a different perspective to offer eachother, but with the common understanding of what it's actually like because we're all going through the same thing. It's one thing I honestly do value about my time here.

I was indeed itching to get out of here some time back, but I have my own room now and that has made things MUCH more comfortable. I do still look forward to getting out and having a crack at some of the bigger challenges that I know are waiting for me, and trying out my new lifestyle. I feel I'm almost ready for it.
I am strong enough to get in and out of bed now without assistance, or in and out of cars, and best of all, I can stay out overnight now! So these things are making all the difference... even just typing it literally makes me grin! biggrin.gif

But one thing I wanted to mention before I went off on a tangent was that not just you Tim, but all of you need to stop apologising for not sending cards and things... I don't expect it and it means I have to start apologising for every time I take so long to write back! Hehehe...

But on the point of things missing me if you send them too close to my discharge date (to make it more confusing, I will be going into 'interim accommodation' (a hotel) somewhere before I end up with the folks), it might be better to send to this address after 10th of May:

Lenna Nightingale (or Selena Nightingale or Riot Grrrl - I'll get 'em all)
P.O Box 74
Lancefield
Victoria 3435
AUSTRALIA

That address will always get to me, but it will just take a little longer to reach me until I actually live there wink.gif

Hey Chickee! I'm so glad to hear that you are doing well. From the sounds of finding a suitable chair-cycle, I think you need to branch out into a new line of work! Think about it... you could start designing some super cool chairs that offer lots of features at reasonable costs. fing02.gif Toss in some wicked cool colors and I think you'd have a waiting list for your chairs! As for a name... I'm thinking "Riot Cycles". cool.gif

I also think of another 'positive' aspect of your current situation. When I listen to what and how you say things in your posts, especially about talking and sharing with the other 'inmates', along with your infinity of determination, energy, and social skills, not to mention your overwhelming happy attitude, etc. I see you as a motivational speaker.
An old acquaintence was paralyzed from a hang gliding accident, and did just that. (He's a lot like you, in many ways)Not only has he gotten back on a motorcycle, he took up ultralighting, and flew across Canada, making a book and taking amazing pictures of the experience... He also did a photo book on the Grand River a World Class designated Heritage river that runs through my little town.
He conducts seminars for groups, businesses, etc. and is tremendously inspiring.
My point? (thank God at last)
I think the Big Guy upstairs has a greater 'plan' for you out of all this.
And I wonder/think that there's a lot of us who feel the same about you here!
Feel the Love,
Greg wub.gif ( I'm sure this will also work for blushing!)

Lenna, this is serious. About 10 years ago, some fellow drag racers I knew started a company that made wheel chairs. They were highly regarded by the way they worked. I know next to nothing about this but you might want to look at their site. http://www.falconrehab.com/LaBac.aspx
That may not be the direct link to the site.
