Highway 20, the North Cascade Highway gets my No. 1 vote as well, although Highway 2, Stevens Pass, is also a very nice ride. You have to be aware of traffic coming back into Seattle on Sundays or Monday holidays over Stevens Pass and I-90 Snoqualamie Pass. Highway 20 has better scenery, is more remote, and both have very good asphalt surface right now.
I like both rides so usually make a loop whenever I go to Winthrop. My house in Duvall to Winthrop and back is just over 400 miles, one tank of gas each way.

choco this was the planned rout for jun13-14 overnight stay in Leavenworth

You might want to look for this place since you will be driving by it. It's a nice stop on the Rainier loop just west of Yakima on Highway 410.

So If I decide to meet you in Leavenworth, what day, Sunday? what time in the morning? Leavenworth is about an hour and a half ride from my house.
I am free on the 13th but not the 14th. Maybe I could ride Winthrop with you guys.
I also heard a rumour that 15kms of the road west of Winthrop is being repaved and it is all gravel right now. Anyone confirm this?
choco planning to leave Leavenworth Sunday no later than 9am staying @quality inn 185 hwy 2. if you could join us that would be great!

Just rode that loop and the roads were in great shape, not sure where you got the rumor, best to check with Winthrop Authorities I suppose. WSDOT should have info as well.

I think this could happen. It's only Monday, but I'll be checking on the weather forecasts and will most likely join you if decent weather. I may have fellow riders, not sure yet.
ah another motorcycling website to join! too many!
I would most likely meet you on the other side of the border since I am a snobby Nexus pass holder. I live in White Rock so it is quick and easy for me to get across the border here.
Choco, when did you ride hwy 20 last?
ok, if I blast back home from Leavenworth early Sunday morning I can make most of this ride happen. I checked out vfrworld and I see the details there. There seems to be a little confusion over the hotel rooms. Where should I book? I also will be recruiting people from my site vrombc.com. It would be myself and two-three other riders.
so far I have myself (White VFR) and another (Silver VFR) in for this ride. We will meet you in Marblemount for 1030am.
I will bring my trip plan for Glacier National Park on July 31st to August 3rd. If we all get along plan for another ride!

Read on PNW Riders that chip sealing was being done on Hwy-20 and the road was limited to one lane at times. Good news is that the sealing was said to be done during the week - not on weekends.
OK sounds good elevation we were planning on taking old skagit hwy on south side of river up to rockport to miss concrete and that busy boring section so time is approx. vrombc.com is that another local BC site like BCSB with or with out all the drama queens LOL

I used to be a VERY active poster on BCSB but had enough. It turned itself into a internet community and not a riding community. vrombc.com is just that, a riding community. I also put a private board on there so no internet randoms show up to the bigger rides. However, it is really easy to get into the private board! haha. I will tell you about when we meet up.
So far three VFR riders are in for Saturday.
have to check that site out. met a lot of great people on BCSB. haven't done that many open rides this yr on that site seems crash ratio is high right now.
looking fwd to ride seems like we have a good group now

Choco, when did you ride hwy 20 last?
Two weekends ago, it was perfect asphalt all the way.
I plan on leaving Duvall at 6:30 am Sunday, taking Ben Howard rd to Sultan then to Leavenworth. Will meet up with you guys sometime around 8:00 to 8:30.
I look forward to meeting and riding with you guys!
See ya Saturday.

Weather looks good! Monica and I are 100% in. See you at the Caboose in Marblemount.
Greetings all who participated in this great ride. Just wanted to drop a quick line that I made it home safely after we parted company. Hwy 12 was a very pretty drive even if I did see five cops...lucky I was stuck behind some cars at the time. Hope the rest of your trip went well also.
It was truly my pleasure to meet all of you (and see you again, Randy) and as the saying goes, we'll have to do it again some time!
Total mileage for me was 812 (518 on Sat., 294 today). Canadian conversion = 1307 km total, 833 Sat, 473 Sun)
-Kevin
Paul, Monica, and I all made it home safe. We had a great ride home through Hwy 2 and then north through all sorts of quiet farm roads then hwy 9. We crossed the border at 2pm.
It was a pleasure to meet and ride with you guys. We hope our energy and excitement of German music don't scare you off! We all need to do it again REAL soon. This time with even MORE people.
Pictures to come soon! They turned out great!
I still have Umpa music ringing in my ears :)

Obligatory shot of all the bikes. Come on it's cool!

Monica head butting Paul (I'm serious!) in the first of MANY candid shots.

Apparently some VFR riders ride two abreast?

What European town doesn't have mountain goats? Robert?
This picture doesn't do Leavenworth justice! Just try to imagine the street Oompa band in the distance.
Can anyone explaine HOREhound candy? ANYONE!
At all times there is an Oompa band playing in the street. It must be in the town charter.
And what trip to Leavenworth be without giant jugs.... of BEER!
one PLATTER coming right up. Pig Shoulder, Half Chicken, Schitznel, beets, sauerkraut, saugsage...
There are videos of this... Paul will have them posted on youtube soon...

We did our best.... but the platter was too huge...

Waiting to hear from Jfviffer, Jeff and friends. We parted company at the Duvall Grill and Tap room after riding from Leavenworth south over Blewett Pass then the awesome Caynon Road to Yakima and Jeff's GPS navigated us to Highway 12 where we parted company with Kevin, Hootch. Glad to hear you made it home safe, Kevin. The ride up to and around Chinook Pass was very nice, Jeff got stopped but no ticket, whew. Rainier was socked in so my Canadian friends will have to come down and try again. My back yard should serve well as a camping spot to start out from. This time we will watch the weather better and ride around St. Helens as well.
Good times, I'd post pictures if someone will tell me how to retrieve them from my pictures and post.
Until next time. Still waiting to hear from Jeff and friends who left Duvall and were heading up to Monroe to Highway 2, then west to 9 and north from there.
Thanks for the great ride! choco we couldn't ask for a better tour guide you sure know all your landmarks and history of each one including brew pubs LOL
No incidents a great ride even a friendly chat with local sheriff on hwy 410. have to take you up on the mnt st helens offer for sure.

Great weekend! Thanks to hootch and choco for all your local knowledge. Choco, I checked out "building 7", I think you're on to something there...brother.
Elevation and crew - you guys know how to have a good time! Nice to meet and ride with you all. Did you ever finish your "doggie bag"?
I'll sort through some pictures and videos when I get some time.
Cheers,
Bryan

Choco, as much as I'd love to check out "building #7" I'm not going too man, strictly out of fear of ending up on the watch list.
