Is this a good price?

Is this a good deal? $400 for OEM side bags w/ all mounting brackets and hardware? My only downfall is they ahve a few scratches on em but their red and my bike is silver so I'd have to repaint them. What does a paint job for something this size run?

Would I be better off skipping this and using the money towards new GIVI bags and brackets? I'd eventually like to get a top case but keep hearing the horror stories to make a GIVI top work with OEM sides.

Idea's? Recommendations?

400.00is less than half the price of new oem bags. I purchased used Givi 35s with brackets on ebay for 360.00. But they also had some scratches.

If you want a top case then invest in KK's solo rack rider and get the used OEM. At that price it's a pretty good deal. Scratches are easy to fix with painting (which you plan on doing anyway). Just consider the price of painting when comparing the final tally (IE are you going to sand them smooth and paint them yourself or are you going to have a professional do the work?).

If you need your back seat for 2 up riding then go with the Givi setup because OEM and Givi top case setups don't mix well (and yes, I know Givi makes the OEM cases but for this discussion I am using Givi to reference after market vs. OEM). For about $750 you can get the V35 side cases and the PLX 166 mounting kit brand new in silver and then adding a top case is pretty straight forward after that.

Having the painting done won't be cheap even for something that small unless you just have someone just spray over the red (uber cheap but uber crappy). For a job that small I would sand them down myself and tape them off before taking it to have them painted with a reputable body shop. It will cut down the cost significantly and only require a bit of your time to get a nice result. As for actual costs? You will have to talk to body shops. Prices vary by location and reputation. Keep in mind with painting though...getting it done right is better than getting it done cheap because in the end you get what you pay for. :warranty:

I voted for the Givi route just because you want to add a top case later and more importantly, it's what I have and they are awesome. :biggrin:

Honestly... I would probably only get the top case for the gf to use as a back rest b/c there's no way I'd need all that trunk space on a daily basis... only for occasional trips, and before anyone asks why I don't just get a trunk... I think trunks by themselves are so ugly! although, I suppose for that purpose I could get a corbin seat with a lady gun fighter just for her :P

Then I would compare the cost of an OEM top case setup vs. the Givi top case and setup to help you determine what the total cost would be in the end and make your determination from there. Either way you are going to be happy. :fing02:

I have all three - top case and two panniers. I love them! They are perfect for long trips and, personally, I think they (OEM) look much nicer and fit the bike better (IMHO).

$400 is a steal unless they are totally wrecked. I think I paid about $1500 for the mounting hardware and side bags. The top case was about $650 for the bracket and case.

I bought an OEM top case for my wife to use as a back rest. I don't care for the looks of the top case by itself either, but I find myself using it more and more. I've been keeping my eyes open for a deal on the side cases, but realistically, probably won't buy them. Don't need the space for daily use and don't like the looks of the brackets without the cases mounted. When I travel, it is solo for a couple of days and I find a tank bag and top case are plenty. I could always add a duffle strapped to the seat.

As to painting, I bought my top case used. Sanded it and painted it with Krylon satin black. Looks like a professional job, spent about $35 for paint and materials.

Just found another set of luggage for sale....

Pearl White OEM top case and side cases - instructions, mounting brackets included...also have a solo top rack - $1300 including shipping. Ugh... bit pricey but wonder if I could get him to $1000. If I could get the side bags for $400, surely a top case and rack isn't $600 by itself (used)

Get the OEM saddlebags for $400.00 and look around for a rear trunk. $1300.00 for the pearl white used set is a rip off and even $1000.00 is a still high. I called Mason City Honda and they have a black trunk and a mount available for around $650 brand new. (Call next week and ask for Keith, he might be able to do better than that for you.)

I have the complete OEM saddlebags and rear trunk for when my fiance rides with me. She and I like it a lot, it gives me storage and it gives her a place to lean back and relax on the long rides. Scratches are going to happen, I have several on my saddlebags and it really doesnt bother me.

I paid $250 shipped for my used OEM top case and rack last year.

If Cornercarver isn't interested I have a set of OEM hardbags and complete hardware UNSCRATCHED, but painted flat black with just a few boot marks that would polish out (except you can't polish flat paint) I'll sell for $375. Repairing and painting scratched bags can be very pricey, repainting unscratched bags is only a little pricey (I had it done for $75, but I repaired the scratches myself and brought them into the bodyshop in primer--and the red wasn't an exact match--just really, really close.) Anyway, the flat black bags actually look pretty good on a red bike if you're interested.

If not, I'll just put them up in the market section on here.

For the record, all it takes is a piece of sheetmetal along with the OEM trunk mount to make the Givi trunk work with the OEM side bags.
