Actually, there is some truth in the MCN piece. At high idle (WAX assembly doing its thing), if you let the clutch out just enough to activate the switch while in first gear, your idle will increase 2-300 rpms immediately.

I have a comment on the �VRF Fuel Injection Hunting� question by James in the January 2005 issue. James did not mention, in his description of the stalling experiences, whether or not the manipulates the throttle while approaching a stop sign. I have experienced similar stalling, and have a recipe for making my VFR stall whenever I wish.

This recipe depends on two things: Only twisting the throttle when instructed, and knowing when you clutch switch is activated. When the engine is off, in quiet surroundings, I can clearly hear the click of the clutch switch. Practice moving the clutch lever enough to disengage the clutch without activating the clutch switch.

1) Find a safe area to experiment in.
2) Warm the bike to operating temperature
3) Rolling along in gear at 7000 rpm or so, close the throttle and let the engine braking slow the machine down.
4) When the rpms have dropped to 4000 or so, move the clutch lever just enough to disengage, but not enough to activate the clutch switch.
5) As the rpms are still falling (from the clutch being disengaged), give the throttle a �blip.�
6) The above procedure delivers one stall.

My interpretation is that the EFI map is different when the clutch is engages, and when not engaged. The coasting is important to clear out any lingering fuel, and perhaps there is a �time out� after which the EFI stops squirting fuel. Since the EFI thinks that the clutch is still engaged, when you �blip� the throttle, it gives a big shop of fuel, which sort of backfires, overpowering what passes for a flywheel on the VFR, causing the stall. Since the system is functioning perfectly, it will restart without problem.

Since the clutch switch is not adjustable (to my knowledge), just live with it or get a bike with its EFI not programmed as if your motorcycle had a flywheel like a car.

You mean you don't want to know how to make your bike stall? I would think it would be quite handy to know while in bumper to bumper rush hour traffic....you know, as a creative way to commit suicide. :blink: I agree with you, some folks do have too much time on their hands. (insert shaking head emitcon here)

I think the point is, maybe that is exactly what people are doing to cause their bikes to stall. It doesn't mean they want to stall it, just their methods may inadvertantly cause it. <_<

I have made my '03 stall on a couple of occasions using just the above technique - only it wasn't intentional :squid: I figured out it was the blipping that caused it and have tried to swear off that activity. It's easier than trying to give up beer :beer:

In point of fact, if you're a member of the "blip it when you downshift school" the process is a near duplicate of the one that alledgely causes the stall. As member of the biwyds I've done that countless times in the last 2 years with nary a stall.

Perhaps this is one more of the "some bikes do it some bikes don't" problems. <_<

I went to that school too. Mine has never stalled or surged for that matter...guess I got lucky. :unsure:

I do the same and I've never, ever experienced a stall. There's something that bothers me about his explanation but I'll have to look at it on paper later. Perhaps I'll experiment a little...

I can make it happen at will.I think I want the safety switch to happen

i find the best way to make mine stall is to turn off the key, or hit the kill switch.....other than that i really only know that if i push down my kick stand in gear it will die. for me i really dont need any other methods :)

Yeah, that kickstand method even works well for my carbureted '95. Darn near every time it will stall right out when I drop it in gear with the stand down.

Or just walk up to your buddy's VFR while it's idling and cover the exhaust outlets.

It'll stall. ;)

Or sneak alongside closely on his right while riding, point/motion excitedly off to his left and smack his kill switch whilst rolling on your throttle. :squid:

I hit my riding buddies kill switch at a stoplight once. He had a hard time getting the bike to restart. Doh. Maybe that wasn't such a funny idea. At least no cars rear ended him when the light went green. :mellow:

So whats the answer, pull in the clutch more when blipping for a downshift? I always blip for a downshift. It keeps me in practice for hardcharging a turn.
