I've been out riding my '02 viffer, when i noticed the flashing black bar over the little red bar come on... and thought jack@ass im not going to make it to the nearest gas station...
When I pulled into the gas station (black bar still flashing over the red light) I only managed to put in 4.7gal into a 5.8gal tank...??? I thought hmmmm, either im not filling this thing completely or I just dont understand this fuel gauge.
I'm a newb in case you were wondering so my question is... Does the black bar start flashing over the little red bar once you have 1 gallon or less remaining and once 0.8gal or less remains the red bar is all you see??
Dont have manual and not feeling like riding around with gas tank stapped to my back, so if someone can just explain to me how this works that would be cool
1. How much gas remains in tank when black bar start flashing over red one?
2. Does is occur at 0.8g (reserve) or less that only red bar is showing?
3. Anything else I should know about reserve light indicator on 6th gen viffer..??
Thanks fellas, appreciate someone running out of gas to give me this info... lol :)
Cheerio
Sorry to inform you but the gas gauge is not the most accurte of instruments, it varies greatly from bike to bike as its just basically just a rheostat with a float attached to the end of it. One wire may be bent slightly from one bike to another, or a tank is positioned slighlty more at an angle from another, too many variables in bikes to make it as accurate as possible.
Just take what you know all ready, You know how far you went right, how many gallons you burned, and you know how much the tank holds, so extrapolate and find out your reserve. You will find the shape of the tank changes how fast the bars dissaper too as its curved and well the volume of gas changes rapidly as it reaches the end of the tank. My gauge always seems to skip the last bar and just starts flashing, but I know how many miles I have rode so I have a good idea I can go up to 220 safely no matter what and probably streatch it to 240 as I have done so before.
I don't have bars on my 90, but the red light comes on at around 200 km. I always thought my absolute upper limit was 250 km, but on one ride last summer I got caught out in the boonies and pushed it to nearly 300 km (thinking the whole time - "crap, I'm gonna run out"). Luckily I had two guys with saddlebags who I could have enlisted for a gas run if required, but I managed to make it.
Moral of the story - don't believe your gas gauge!!
Like HS and cbar sad. Tha gasgage is just for indicator. It gives you an estimated value. Just watch your trip meter and you will learn when it is time to stop fueling. Oh, almost forgot, the manual says .8 Gallon is the reserve from the last blinking brick. (it is also an estimate)
So in summary,
1. The flashing black bar over little red bar comes on when 0.8gal remains (in theory). The is no additional indicator right?
2. Range varies between 200 - 275 miles on 5.8g (you'll know based on your riding style), refuel accordingly.
3. Riding faster between fuel stops means less time spent on the road => better gas consumption... lol
Thats pretty much it. Your next indication after that last bar starts flashing is when the engine dies. I wouldn't recommend pushing it quite that far. :D Like HS said, just keep track of what you put in after it starts flashing, and over time you will get a pretty good idea of how far you can go.
I'll tell ya - the day I really pushed it, the ride was pretty much spoiled because I was constantly anticipating the bike to sputter and stall...but I'm glad I've got a better handle on the range...
Wasn't there a Seinfeld where Kramer and a Saab salesman did a Thelma & Louise spoof on trying to push the fuel gauge needle further than it's ever been?? :goofy:
Cbar my 90 is about the same as yours, although I have never run it past 260k. And you're right it can really ruin your ride if you have been hammering on it and then have to start pussyfooting it to stretch the gas.
always know how far you go by mileage, never trust the gauges!!!
I learned on a bike with just a dummy light so I have always depended on mileage, same for my car.

I got it pretty well to 300 km, although I must admit from about 240 km and on, I was down pretty low in the revs since I thought I was running on fumes. When we filled up, it still didn't take full capacity!
But I'm only going to push it like that when I have my chase riders with their saddle bags!!
