Not to start an oil war, but I did a search on this site typing "Amsoil" and not one post came up... Does anyone on this site use this oil? I have used the Amsoil Heavy Duty Diesel and Marine 15w-40 in my two diesel trucks that I have owned and have been very happy. I was planning on putting the Amsoil 10w-40 High Performance snythetic motorcycle oil in my VFR that I just bought. Seems like most guys on here are "Mobil enthusiasts". Mobil is great stuff too, just curious if any other "synthetic gurus" run Amsoil. :wheel:
I think there was a post by one of the 'Scootrs' mentioning testing a new Amsoil?
I am no oil expert but I'm going to change my diffs and transfer case on my truck to Amsoil. A lot of people swear by it. Pricey but good stuff I hear. You could go onto the Amsoil website and read oil statistics until you are asleep.
It'll be interesting to hear from the experts.
Edited: See a reply from an oil god already (above)! It must have been the other Scootr that mentioned Amsoil in a previous post.
People get mad on here about oil posts but it keeps it technical and the levity down, so I'm all for it
Someone needs to send ScootR some to test, I think he said he has never tested it yet ! They also have a full Syn. fork oil I was looking at and someone here was using that's only $8 a bottle, where stuff like RaceTech, Ohlins fork oil is $25 a bottle !

This Mobil 1 enthusiast has run Amsoil in a number of bikes with excellent results... sure beats Wesson... unless you're invite to an all night orgy with the Umbrella girls...

mdr vfr, Apr 5 2005, 02:52 PMI am currently running Amsoil and have had good results :)
Are you running the "high performance" motorcycle synthetic (AMF)or the "regular" motorcycle synthetic. (MCF)I sent an e-mail to Amsoil on the difference between the two. It is weird. The "high performance" oil seems to have better numbers on the data sheets than the regular synthetic motorcycle oil, but it is almost $3.00/qt cheaper! Very confusing...  I have yet to hear back from Amsoil on this, but will post their response...
After just purchasing my bike recently, I changed the oil pretty much right away and am currently using the Amsoil 10W-40 Cycle Oil. I currently sell Amsoil products at my business mainly for automotive purposes with excellent results. Nearly everything Amsoil sells is top quality in my opinion, including their filters. This was why I decided to use their cycle oil, even though I had never researched or seen much feedback on it until this point. But like others here have mentioned, I don't think there's a huge difference in one oil brand to another. I do feel synthetic is better, but brand to brand it's honestly pretty close. Not big enough differences to where one of our engines would fail prematurly before another because of oil brand. I think that engines like what are in our bikes are pretty much mechanically perfect in most ways, and as long as the oil is kept changed, regardless of brand, I wouldn't think there would ever be a major problem, especially one that could be blamed on the oil. The way I see it though, as long as your'e buying the stuff and taking time to change it anyway, you might as well go with something good.
But yes, Amsoil does seem to be one of those unique products out there that almost has a "following" you could say; most people who use it swear by it, and sometimes end up running it in any motorized vehicle they own.

That would be cool, I'll also try to pick some up at Cyclegear if they have it. It's a 10W-40 right ?
I've seen some other posts about people running mobile1 Vtwin in thier VFR. I think this is a 15W-50 or 20W-50 oil. I switched to Amsoil 10W-40 Syntetic last season and it seems fine. My clutch doesn't slip, but the tranny doesnt seem quite as smooth, but I could be imagining that. I was thinkng of trying a heavier weight to see if that improves. Any harm?
That's a good question that I've been wondering about as well. Has anyone else noticed any shift quality differences between different oil viscosities?
For those who care, I got this reply from Amsoil technical service:
From: AMSOIL Technical Services
Thank you for contacting AMSOIL with your concerns.
In response to your inquiry, AMSOIL Synthetic 10W40 Motorcycle oil (MCF) is the new and improved cycle oil. The AMF is being discontinued. We have attached a very informative Q&A sheet for your viewing.
Thank you again for the opportunity to respond to your concerns. As always, please feel free to contact us again if we can be of further assistance.
Adam30, Apr 6 2005, 01:21 PMInteresting. But you had said that the numbers on the data sheet were actually better with the "old" formula, right.
Makes you wonder how much "improvement is in the new formula, but who knows?
hehe, I agree... When I said "better numbers" I was mainly referring to the VI, which is higher with the oil that is being phased out.. I am not an oil expert by any means, but I always thought the higher the VI, the better the protection....

The improvement may be in it's profitability. ( PI ) Those hoochie mammas in the photo look more like a canola crowd. They sure never seen any " extra virgin" olive oil ! Seriously, A friend of mine who used to know someone that supplied crack to several leading race teams said he heard that someone on the internet was almost sure that one of the big three swears by !/3 gear oil, 1/3 furniture polish, and 1/3 marvel mystery oil. Oil data ? OIL DATA ? We don't need no stinking oil data .

Yes, big time, the new MB1 VTwin 20W-50 was thicken up from 17 cSts @ 100C to 21 almost 22, like the HD Syn 3 oil. My VFR now shifts butter smooth, unbelieable, incredible, unreal. Try it, you'll see.

I just bought a case of it from the Esso/Mobil dealer, he had to bring it in special as it's not on the shelves here. Scottr's last sentence is music to my ears, can't wait to change my oil now. I currently have red cap in it.
I like oil posts, they never get tiring to me. Keeps the levity down
ok, so what about Harley Syn3? When I was buying it for my Buell, it was pretty cheap compared to Mobile1 and the others. And yeah, when I switched to it, it made that sloppy old sportster tranny shift like silk...which is saying something.
I've looked at it, know who makes the oil and additives, a woman formulated it BTW. It's damn good stuff IMO and have considered using it as MB1 oil is so hard to find. Price was just as high for the Syn 3. Have a HD dealer 2 miles away but would have to request they put the oil in little brown paper bags least anyone sees me buying it. Matter of fact, I wore a bag over my head when I went in there to get it :)

Kinda like this?

By the way-I found that Walmart here in Temple carries the 20W50 for $6.88/qrt but they never seem to have any in stock when I go. The local Mobil distributor can sell me a case for $42 with 6 qrts/case. That's pretty close to Walmart's price.
That's interesting info guys, the kind of stuff I like to hear. After spending some time on my '02 recently, I'm gettting alittle annoyed with the shift quality. It just seems kind of sloppy and inconsistent. I just don't know if that's characteristic for this bike or if it could be improved with a 20-50 oil instead of the Amsoil 10w-40 Cycle oil which I'm running now.
Now I'm an Amzoil dealer here at my business. Obviously, the Amsoil 20W-50 Cycle oil is easiest to get for me. Has anyone heard any feedback or used any of this at all, and could I expect the same or similar results as the Harley stuff?
Of course I could get the Amsoil for the best price compared to others, even before investing in a pack of paper bags if I were to go with the Harley stuff...

ScootR,
I'm curious, how does the new M1VT viscosity compare to the old formula or to 15-50 or perhaps delvac 1 at 40F. I've run VT (the old thinner version) in the vfr a couple of times and in cold starts at ambients much below 70 the engine acts as if the parts were glued together. It's also significantly noisier on start up with (old) VT in the crankcase.
