VFR Discussion Group -> VFR sounds like a Volkswagen?!?!?!?!?!

I was told that my VFR sounded like a Volkswagon beetle today. I had to recognize that this was coming from a guy that has only owned two bikes in his life, both CBR600rr's, may the first one rest in peace(or pieces) in other words "Squid". I really don't put much merit on what he has to say.
I've never seen another Vtec VFR on the road let alone hear what one sounds like when it goes by. I've heard 5th gen, and they definitely don't sound beetlish. I like the sound I can hear while on the bike, it's quiet but throaty. I never really would ever dream VW beetely. Can anyone comment on the sound of a passing VTEC VFR with stock pipes?

Actually, I think somebody shoved a potato up the squid's pipe. :joystick:

The bike does have different sounds when accelerating hard at different RPM's. I bet if you accelerated really hard above 7 grand it would make him think twice about it sounding like a beetle. It does have a way different sound than if you were to accellerate hard at 2-3 grand. Just my personal observance.

Squid must have been high or somthing?

My VFR reminds me of my Forester XT- a Jekyll and Hyde critter.

I can cruise casually on either one, and folks might say "I didn't even hear you come up the driveway." On the VFR, that means shifting to keep the RPM at 3500-4000, pretty unassuming.

Then, if you shift at 5-7K RPM, there's a nice "snarl" to the tone, and the bike seems poised to leap forward or "stay leashed," very responsive to the throttle and eager to go- and it sounds like it, too.

Just my sense from being *on* the bike, mind you, haven't heard one go by either. Matches the experience of listening to a nice sound clip someone posted on this board recently, tho'...

Whatever ANYone says, though, if you couldn't be happier, 'nuff said. :thumbsup:

Ummm, a turbo charged sewing machine? :huh: That's what zeps sounded like when I saw him last. I had forgotten how quiet a stock VTEC was. Get you some aftermarket pipes and let that sweet V4 sounds escape. :idea3:

I had somebody tell me that my 5th gen with Micron pipe sounded like a "hyperactive weedwhacker". This also came from a squidly-type punk who bought an R1 for his first bike and his first "mod" was the removal of the mirrors because "don't it look cool without 'em?!?!" Never saw him again, but be willing to bet that R1 is also 'resting in pieces' as dnossirb elegantly put it...

I think they are just jealous.

At idle mine sounds a bit like my friend's CRF450 but a lot deeper. (puttputtputtputtputtputt) At cruising, sounds like my wife's V8 Mustang, and above 7K sounds like a NASCAR motor pushing 200mph! My buddy was nice enough to ride it by me pushing the redline while I stood in one place to get the full effect! Quite cool!
I've had many I-4 owners comment on how cool the VFR sounds so I think the guy's just messing with you! (jealous!)

I suppose a fifth gen with stock exhaust could sound like a Beetle in the 4~5K rpm range. Not alot of exhaust noise combined with the whine of the gear driven cams.

Tell him that you think he needs to listen again. While he is leaning down by your pipe, give the throttle a good twist!! :goofy:

He's just messing with you.

Next time you pass him, start the pass over 7k and make sure the throttle is at the stop as you go by. Might have to shift.

I think the VFR sounds like a hybrid between a V-twin and an inline four. So I guess it sounds like what it is a V-four.

I mean, you get some of the V-twin's flat, droning and uneven power pulses (In stereo). But you also get a touch of the inline fours high rpm wailing (Minus the scream of course). It is, as you all know. Unique.

You forgot to mention the sound of the gear whine on the previous generations!

Y'know, I kept wondering why anyone has a problem with the sound of the stock VFR, when mine sounds just fine... then I realized, it's just that

I wouldn't mind if someone said my Stock VFR sounded like a VW beetle.
I'd have to assume that he was refering to the fastest beetle there ever was, with a new movie coming out soon....

That would be "HERBIE" the love bug! That son of a gun can almost fly!

p.s. The red ones might be faster and the black ones might be louder and the blue ones might look the coolest, but the Silver Ones Fly, thus the wings!

I still remember reading the 1986 Daytona 200 article in a magazine that described the 'new' VFR's sound as "startling", and a "cross between a roar and a shriek".

19 years later and it's still the best sounding bike you can buy.

I wear earplugs because it's to loud.

I loved the sound of my RC51 but did not care for the sound of my 5th generation VFR. It was not until I put on a Twobros pipe did start to appreciate the music the VFR could unleash. Even then I would have prefered not to hear the gear driven cams but with the pipes the gear driven cams could hardly be heard. I know I'm in the serious minority on this but oh well. With the 6th I am happy not to hear the whine honestly. My RC51 (with the TwoBros pipes also) just sounded so friggen mean and awesome. felt like it was drowning out half the Harleys I flew by with their loud pipes. I miss that bike but wouldn't trade the VFR for it any day.
