VFR Discussion Group -> "01 - goes tic tic tic while coasting with clutch

My '01 with 7800 miles on it, goes tic tic tic when I'm coasting with clutch pulled in. First noticed it last week when slowing for a hiway exit.

The tic slows down as the bike slows down. Doesnt seem to do it with brakes applied or when downshifting.

I can feel the tic more than I can hear it, seems to be coming from the left side around the chain area. My other bike is shaft driven and doesnt do this.

Is this normal?

:beer: No I would say it isn't normal. Have you got your chain adjusted properly, and lubed. I was riding with a bud the other day and I heard a squeek from the rear of his bike. Turns out it chain was bone dry,We Lubed it up and it's now quiet as a mouse. Ley us know what you find out.

Does the tic vary with engine rpm, or clutch-in coasting speed, or not at all.

It may be very hard to hear it at higher rpm/engien noise, but if it varies, then in relation to what.

yeah it varies with coasting speed... slower speed = slower tic

I got the bike on its center stand right now in the garage, was putting a coat of wax on it... guess i'll check out the chain while I'm at it

HispanicSlammer made a good suggestion.

I'd also ensure that the chain is correctly tensioned, which includes ensuring it hasn't reached/exceeded its stretch limits.

A loose chain has a tendency the contact the guide/guard area around the FRONT sprocket when slack. The tic (or clacking) presents when the chain is NOT under HP tension (e.g. throttle off, clutch in, free wheeling).
