seat cowl scuffing paint

i took my seat cowl of my bike this weekend to give my
girl a ride and could not believe the scuffs in the paint.
i know it was on right even though that seat is the biggest
pain in the ass to get on compared to my past bikes. anybody
ever have this happen? is there a way to buff out flat black? pissed.gif

I don't have that problem but my friend has a sargent that caused that on his bike (and once on mine when I had his seat). I used some polishing compound and that worked.
Don't use rubbing compound as that is too strong. The polishing compound may take some work, but it's mild enough to get you where it looks pretty good. Good luck with it. H

Mine was starting to do it as well from my Corbin seat. There are already two little rubber pads on the seat cowl. I ordered two more of those, trimmed to fit, and stuck them where the scuffing was. Works like a charm and they are only $1-$2!

You can also tighten/align the rear cowl a bit to prevent it from happening. Mine was rubbing horribly until I loosened the rear cowl to gut the exhaust. When I put it back together there was plenty of clearance.

thanks for the ideas. when i get the time i'll definitely figure something out. i'm just afraid to put any kind of polishing/cleaning compound on the matte black paint. i was told it won't come off!

Seems that mine is doing the exact same thing. My rear cowl seems to flex quite a bit up and down. Not sure if this is completely normal, but when you lightly grab the very end of the cowl/taillight you can easily move it up and down an inch or so. The cowl piece at the rear just pins into two rubber grommets along with 4 mounting bolts. I am looking at stiffening mine up.....just haven't aquired the time yet. The extra pads that Promed mentioned sound like a good start.

Mine has about 1/2 inch of movement as well. How do you get to the 4 mounting bolts that hold the rear seat cowl on?

First, pull your grab handles if you have them mounted. With the seat off you will see 2 silver bolts close to where the grab handles mount and then 2 at the very front of the cowl on each side of the bike. The cowl should slide backwards at that point, enough to unplug your light bulbs and license plate light. You'll have to spread it apart to clear the mufflers. I'm questioning myself as I write this, but the mud flap might bolt into the rear light assembly. I eliminated mine as soon as I got the bike so I can't remember for sure.
