Did you convert to a Ducati rear hub??

BST CF Rear Wheel

I wish I had the cash to get it and do the conversion.

BST are beautiful wheels. However I'd be afraid everytime I had to take it in to get new tires. I'd have nightmares of getting it back with the lip busted off trying to get the tire on by some moron who doesn't know what he's doing.

Carbon Fiber 'race' wheels on the street ? No thanks. I worry enough about bending my Marchesinis which cost less than $500 each, nevermind something I might have to take a loan out to replace.

I not sure if a Ducati hub is compatible with a Honda VFR... however the RC45 hub and
axle will plug right in an VFR 800...

I believe BST carbon fiber wheels are lot stronger than our magnesium Marchesinis...
I've witnessed a BST carbon wheel that was bounced off the floor without a scratch...
you can't do that with magnesium... Carbon fiber... due to it's weave... is not prone to
cracking... whereas Magnesium is prone to cracking...

Larry, can you expound on what exactly was necessary to get the RC45 spindle and hub to work on an 800?

What mods were required on the brake caliper or torque arm? How is the chain alignment?

And anything else you can think of. I've been trolling for an RC45 wheel on EBAY for awhile now and nothing ever seems to come up.

Hopefully I'm not 'mowing Larry's grass' for him, but here's my .02

The VFR800 design is based on the RC45, except for the four-bolt spindle, so all the RC45 parts, including the eccentric fit in the VFR swingarm. I can't tell from Larry's pics whether he used the RC45 or VFR torque arm or caliper bracket, but looking at the microfiche, it looks like the RC45 caliper/torque rod arrangement will also be necessary for the conversion. Honda has different part #'s for both the torque rod and caliper bracket. Doesn't mean they're not interchangeable, but probably only in a pair.

That's a boatload of parts when you can modify your existing VFR spindle for under $500....

The Ducati's eccentric is a little smaller and a little wider than the VFR's. Your options, if you want to fit a Duc hub in your VFR are as follows:

* buy a complete Ducati 748-998 swingarm (about $300) and pull the final drive out - resell what's left
* fabricate a sleeve to fit the eccentric in the VFR swingarm
* fabricate a torque arm to mount up the Duc brake stay
* modify the Duc brake stay for the torque arm you made (the Duc stay 'slides' on a pin on the Duc swingarm the VFR does not have
* buy a CBR600F4/F4i rear master cylinder and mount it up in place of the VFR800's oem unit

I would be most concerned with aligning the countershaft/final drive sprockets since there is a slight differential in eccentric width. The Ducati cush drive also uses cheap rubber grommets so if I did this kind of thing I would spend a few extra $$$ and put in aftermarket urethane bushings.

One other option is to weld a boss on the VFR's swingarm for the Duc brake stay to slide on, but I don't like modifying major components when there are alternatives. There is a small clearance issue you will encounter when you adapt the Duc brake stay to a nut-and-bolt arrangement that means you will most likely have to use a buttonhead bolt.

I have not done this myself although I have seen VTR1000's with VFR swingarms that have had Ducati final drives put in them, so obviously it's possible.

RC45 axle and hub plug right in an VFR and I think the alignment comes out
perfect...

I didn't check brake caliper and torque arm...

Here's an Ebay deal that includes everything you need to convert to an RC45 axle
and hub... happy biding...

Thanks SafeT for compiling the list... everything MW4 are RC45 parts and everything
MR7 are RC30 parts... you can see that the RC45 shares little with legend...

Hmmmm....13 bids and more than 3 days left - my guess is it will bring about 800 GBP, or $1,397 US before it's done.

What I would like to know before I bid on that is exactly what RC45 parts were used - could be the guy just put the RC spindle/cush drive into the VFR eccentric, which might not be good. I also don't see a rear brake - not good if you need the RC45 unit, and only slightly less good if you need the VFR unit.

Shipping for something like this is also going to be in the neighborhood of 250 GBP, or $436 US.

I guess that's a reasonable deal if you WANT a Marvic Penta Magnesium rear wheel and have a CBR to put it on, though.

The RC45 doesn't employ a cush drive and the RC45 spindle will not fit into a VFR
eccentric... so I think you're looking at a real RC45 axle and eccentric...

I've asked for more pics when it first when on Ebay and what they did was install the
RC45 gold anodized sprocket carrier on backwards...

wheel.gif well wot can i say.. i am the nutter who 'won' this interesting arrangement of RC45 hub n wheel with a 94-97viffer swingarm. A Blade shock thrown in also, doesent fit proper, so it will prob b back on ebay for sum lucky cbr person.
All looks to be a bit of a lash up 2 b honest.
The rc hub looks like it fits well in the swingarm, so thats the wheel on. yippy, well sorta.. the 200 section tire is coming off 4 a 180 diablo corsa.. mainly bcos it don't fit in swingarm and rubs huh.gif
There is no break caliper as yet.. but i am hoping to find a small brembo number and modify the bracket poss with new billet example as soon as i sort out the rest of the shite.
Am thinking of fixing torque arm from caliper mount and fix it direct to the hole left by the previous vfr's break fitting arrangement on swing arm, looks possible and again will be simple billet number.
I am using a 1992(fn) frame and swingarm, so am thinking keep things simple, just swop the rc45 hub n wheel and use my '92 swing arm and the shock i have on bike already.
Am still deciding on wot to do with the sprockets as yet.. because the rc45 uses a 525 chain and me rc36 uses 530. i will try to go 525 first, but is to early to decide 4 sure as yet. Need to make sure everything lines up ok with chain guide and all first..else its an aftermarket 530 on the rear with me honda 530 front sprocket.
Can do pics if any1 interested as and when i get things moving ere.. Any tips n hints on previous lash ups also come in handy..
I have started and am now looking for a proper castle nut arrangement to attach the wheel on properly and use a split pin, as the one in the deal is not the right one. i think a proper rc45 one will have to be got.. here we go.... fing02.gif

Front sprocket: you can use a fireblade front sprocket (520 and 525 available) or an RC30 front sprocket (better alignment). Rear sprocket: you can also use an RC30 sprocket: 525 and 520 available.

sweet.. i will try david silver spares for the rc30 front from honda and an rc30 rear, and see which size is offered as oem.. am sure oem will give best results as they are of corse better than pattern rubbish usually. wheel.gif

The RC30 has different front and rear sprocket sizes: 1th gear is very, very long (75 mph..).
You can also use a NC30 (VFR400R) rear sprocket.

great.. have ordered rc30 sprockets... if i dont get on with gearing, i will try get an aftermarket rear with a few more teeth on.. btw mr honda has just asked me for 30 for a new rear spindle wheel locking castle nut,(the one to hold the wheel on with a split pin in)... a trip to my local nut n bolt man my save me 20.. will see.. oh wot joy.
Got my eye on a 999 ducati rear brembo break unit in silver to match me nissin fronts.. .. 35 inc postage at moment.. so thats looking up..
