Just changed oil to Mobil EP 15W-50 (thanks for the tip ScootR) and decided to rid my ride of that cumbersome canister. I kept the smaller hose open and re-routed it alongside the other drain hoses. Then I plugged the larger hose after the evap canister purge valve.
So far the bike shows no sign of adverse effect as a result of this mod.
I snapped some photos but felt they're not detailed enough for the How-To section.
BTW - canister removal already came in handy today after I noticed the new M1 f

I put some air horns on my bike a few weeks ago. I found that the compressor for the air horns fits nicely where the EVAP canister use to go. happy.gif

How does the purge valve operate? What's the effect of leaving it either plugged or open.

The evap canister stores fumes from the gas tank when the engine is not operating. When the engine is operating the purge valve opens and lets the stored fumes into the air box,
after the air filter, so they will be burned by the engine. Thus, when removing the evap canister, if one leaves the valve open (does not plug the line), unfiltered air will be allowed into the engine. Not good.

Ohhhh, so that's what that bloody thing is. Having seen Das Bone's pictures of his frame sliders on the right-side of his bike I couldn't for the life of me work out what that small box with the air hoses going into it was. We don't have that rubbish on the bikes we get here, so I'm glad I finally know what the heck it was!
Actually I just realised that I still have the same hose that is used for the evap, because there is this hose that leads from the fuel tank to a drain tube - and it had this wacky join in the middle of it (so it was effectively two pieces of hose joined together). I kept looking at it over the years wondering why the hell they joined the hose rather than used a single piece. goofy.gif
