Harris CF hugger

Hey, there's always a running hugger thread somewhere, and the question is always the same: Who makes the best hugger, what does it look like, does it replace the stock chainguard?

Well, I always answer with Harris. I'm biased, 'cause I've got one, but I did my research before I bought it and haven't had a moment's regret.

Before I got it, I emailed Harris asking for a bigger, better picture than the one on their website. This is the same pic as on the site, but it's the fullsize version.

I thought it might help someone trying to decide on a hugger. My advice: don't go cheap. Get one that'll replace the plastic chainguard because you don't want to bolt an expensive CF bit to a cheap plastic chainguard. Looks cheesy.

If you're strapped for cash, Harris makes this in a woven fibreglass version. Same style and construction, just that it's a black weave of fibreglass instead of CF.

Unpainted, it's quite pretty, but if you absolutely have to have your hugger colour matched to your bike, that would be the way to go. Get the fibreglass one and have it painted locally.

Actually, the original pic was even bigger, 752x623 and 37.2k, but the forum software automatically shrinks it down to 640x531 and 35.5k

Wow, looks really good! Do they just fit 5th gen., or 6th as well?

Looks great. Did you have to take the rear wheel off to install? Easy installation? How was the fit? I like to look and will provide for some protection, but hate to spend alot of time doing this just to find out the fit now quite as good as thought.

You can buy direct from Harris Performance in the UK as well.

Note that you do NOT have to pay the 17% VAT if you live outside the UK, so figure that into the pricing.

Back three years ago when I was looking for a hugger I wanted a combo chainguard and hugger.

So I found the Thurn CF at Dynamohumm and ordered it........finally get it and it's broken. Sent it back(looked kind of flimsy anyway) after some agro and decided to try something else.

Discovered that the Harris CF for the 6th gen had just hit the market so I ordered one. Got it and it looked really nice and much stronger than the Thurn. But when I went to mount it I found that the mounting holes didn't line up dry.gif

So, I called EMA and sent it back and they didn't seem to know what the problem was.

So, I ended up getting the NWS "Ghost" silver CF hugger. It wasn't a combo unit but with the luck I'd had with the Thurn and Harris at that time it was seemed like the only and best option available.

Now you've got me to thinking about huggers again tongue.gif

I'd really like to have a color matched combo chainguard/hugger cause I want to do something new to my '03(it's been a while) and I always really wanted a combo unit anyway.

Anyone with 6th gen VFR's care to elaborate on how the Harris mounts up these days(as I'm assuming that mounting hole problems that I experienced may have been due to bad batch or being new?) and how good the fit in general is. Obviously the fit on Rob's bike is top notch but before I begin on this mission I'd like to know that all will be O.K. this time tongue.gif

I just checked the Harris site in the UK and the fibergalss weave version for the 6th gen is $153.52. I would imagine that EMA should be able to get it here?

I did not install it myself but the guy that did said it was a breeze.

I bought the Harris CF Hugger from EMA a couple of years ago for about $225. Like you I was not happy with the quality as the holes did not line up and/or were not drilled. With some modifications, I did eventually get it installed though and was happy with it until I replaced the OEM Dunlops with Pirelli Diablos. With the higher profile Diablos, there is almost no clearance between the tire and hugger, and with rocks, nails, etc. picked up by the tire, I now have chips in the hugger. I've now got to try and sand it down for more clearance. pissed.gif

Below are some pics. Please disregard the dirt as I haven't washed the baby in awhile. You can see that mine came in two pieces that mated together and you can see the lack of tire clearance. It looks like they might have changed to a one piece design since then and it may be worth another look. Don't know if clearance will be an issue though.

Yeah that clearance issue is bad.

Interesting to hear that you had the same problems with the mounting holes lining up as I did..........is there anyone else on here that has a 6th gen that has a more "recent" hugger from Harris to see if they've fixed these issues.

I certainly don't want to even think about it if these kinds of problems still exist ohmy.gif

1 how wide is the hugger???

2 distance from center of hugger to the center of chain guard???

i just received a carbon chain guard fron said mr Thorn Motosprts ... all the way from europe.. lovely peice of kit.. ill send pics if i have to. looks the nuts 2..
