Is that your 636 in the background? If so you already have a corner scratcher, I'd say build the VFR for the long rides you mentioned? Hard bags and a large quarter fairing? beer.gif
Good luck with the op recovery and the project. Here's a few ideas. I'm assuming you have checked that the running gear is all straight and true and the drivetrain is sound.
Personally, I'd go for a post-modern, stripped-back look. Not much to do at the back, then - just gut the stock cans and strip the extraneous metal off them.
At the front, I'm guessing you don't have much in the way of bodywork - good fing02.gif Not that the Vtec is ugly, or anything... hit your local breaker yards and start scouting plastics off other bikes, you can make anything fit anything with a bit of work, and if you go half-faired then there's even less work involved.
I see only one radiator - I know of someone who ran a single rad on a crashed 98-01 VFR with no real temperature issues. So don't be afraid to re-plumb it if you don't want to fork out for another rad just yet (but do plan to fit the other one at some stage).
While chasing down the right plastics, start tidying up the bits you can see now - re-route wiring and plumbing, cover wiring with purpose-made harness tubing and fit nylon braided covers to the rubber hoses in your choice of colour (or use clear if you want the stainless steel look).
CBR1100XX bars will bolt on and give a better riding position (get them before you start test-fitting your new plastic).
Damaged tanks are tough. Maybe you can bog up the damage - and 'refine' the overall shape of the tank at the same time - then use it to take a mould from. Then use your mould to lay up a carbon fibre one-piece tank cover.
Here's another "VFR" project for you to consider taking some ideas from - note that this bike carries a V-Max motor:
Lastly, a tip that I wish I could take myself laugh.gif The best way to go about a project is to assemble all the bits you need up-front. That way, you will stick to the original gameplan rather than chopping and changing all the time, and you will also maintain your motivation to finish the project 'in a timely manner'.
I hope you have a speedy and complete recovery. I was wondering if your hip's reconstruction had any connection with the bike's DE-struction. I, personally, don't care for half fairings. When it comes to plastics it's either all or nothing. Heck, I'd prefer the Goldwings had a full lower! I'm sick like that. If I had a box bike to do whatever with, I'd go for the naked street fighter look. Save money on plastics for bling. I had a pal with a stripped-down GSXR 1100 with a huge round headlight attached up front. Man, it looked wicked! Good for cruising the town and not much more.
Rogue, Nov 28 2005, 09:13 AMWhere do you get the idea that this is a V-MAX motor ? Which parts of the bike qualify Lazareth to call it a VFR800 then ? The swing arm? Does not look at all like the right hand side of the Lazareth bike. Note the right side shaft drive on the V-MAX. Rod.
You are correct, it is a VFR motor and states that in the first line of it's specs! fing02.gif
I don't think the VFR-800 is the right bike to go without a fairing. Put some plastic on it. IMHO, streetfighter equals squid.gif . If you want a naked bike, sell it for parts and buy a bike that was meant to be naked.
vfrmonkey, Nov 29 2005, 07:37 AMFInd a cbr1k curved radiator on epay, throw on an RC51 front end, learn carbon fiber molding and build the world's best sounding naked bike...
Is there really enough room to fit a curved radiator between the engine & front wheel? I accept that the oil radiator would probably have to be moved ( I have a 5th gen but looking at these photos it seems the 6th gen oil cooler is in front of the forks already).
The Phantom, Nov 29 2005, 07:45 AMGeez Rob, you've got your nose in everyone's backyard haven't you? laugh.gif
I was going to go and check that bike out when it appeared on ebay. Still like it - it works surprisingly well.
If I ever see it about I'll get some more pics of it.
Ok people,I have decided to go naked streetfighter. Upsidedown front end, minimal bodywork. Everything that is not essensal will be elimitminated. I am keeping the dirt bike handlebar setup to keep-up with H-Slammer in the tight stuff.More leverage. The bike above would probably be more comfortable to ride if it had footpegs. I will post progress pics as they come. Late Bash

Good Observation on the lack of pegs. HAHA. One thing to think about with going naked is all the electronics that the nose hides. You will need to come up with some space somewhere for all of that. Possibly under the tank if you did a custom airbox. Lots of stuff to hide.

Yea,I was looking @ that, relocating the oil cooler, regulator, ecu, relays, ect.Might be tough to do. The rear is going to be relatively easy. I was looking @ the possibility of a pair of dirtbike rads forward mount, they are not as wide, maybe. I have time so I'm not stressed. Late Bash

I've moved my rear coils and the starter relay to the side of the bike (my new battery box takes up the space they used to sit in).
Sorry for the pic quality - cheap camera phone... also just realised that this is a 'mock-up', I've since made a bracket for the coils and fitted everything neatly to the side of the alloy battery box. Time I took some more pics of it I suppose.

Ditch the plastics, find a tail you like of another bike or a race seat pan, modify the sub frame, move the electronics that were under the fairing under the seat, ditch the gauges, swap the front end for something better, over all they clean up nice. its just a matter of moving stuff around and ditching a lot of useless crap. its worth it in the end, nobody will get it but other VFR enthusiast, it makes a great streetfighter. i have photos of mine if you want to see what i mean.
HispanicSlammer, Dec 19 2005, 06:28 AMHMM are you the same bash I rode with from the Colorado Springs Sportrides List??
Miguel,is there any other Bash? Yes ,it's me,my cover is blown. Give me a couple more months to get healed and the VFR fixed. We'll go for a ride then. I still have the other Honda if I don't get this one running by the time I'm ready to ride again. Late Bash
