I was wanting a carbon fiber tank protector but did not think that the ones I had seen covered enough of the tank. I liked the MagKnight ones but thought 'fake carbon fiber? Nah!' Thought about the color matched ones but couldn't bring myself to part with the $80 to get one. So, I did a little thinking. I got this sheet of vinyl coated real carbon fiber which is flexible enough but I didn't want to stick it to my tank permanently. I went to a local craft store and found this sheet of flexible magnetic material, you know the kind they make signs out of. I carefully taped up my tank with masking tape and marked out the areas I wanted to cover, and came up with a design I thought suitable. First I cut out the pieces of magnet and tested them out on the bike just to be safe in case any modifications needed to be made. Then once I was happy with the overall appearance I adhered the carbon fiber material to the magnet and trimmed it to the magnet. I will most likely seal the edges to keep it looking good but here is a photo of the pieces on the bike. [image: user posted image] P1010175.JPG
The great thing is they can be removed for cleaning and they are not permanent. Also, If I get another bike with a metal tank they might work on it also with maybe very slight modifications. I spent $30 for the carbon fiber sheet and still have some left over and only $5 for the magnetic sheet and I also have more left over of that. So, for $35 and a little masking tape and time I think I got just what I was looking for.
Lou Nice job. I have a few scratches on my tank from the PO that i always wanted to cover , but the magnight and others didnt come up far enough. You maybe have come up with a solution to my problem too beer.gif Good stuff. What did you use to cut the carbon sheet , scissors? or?
Can these carbon fiber sheets be adhered to other materials, such as the black plastic battery cover on the 6th generation? Do they require a resin or some other coating after application? I'm just curious as to why TapeWorks sells vinyl carbon fiber if the same job could be done with the real stuff.

Yes I used scissors and an exacto knife. This stuff is a vinyl coated C/F very easy to cut.

Thes sheets come with an adhesive already on them, peel and stick. no coating after application but I think I need to seal the edges so they last awhile.
I got these sheets from this guy on ebay. You need to check with him to sell you a bigger sheet. This 10x9 sheet will not do it. but here is an auction number from him on ebay.8018250567 It does take a while to get. He just sends it regular mail from the UK.

Did you just use the adhesive of the CF to stick it to the magnetic sheet? What are you thinking to seal the edges with?

Whatever I use must be clear and flexible, able to adhere to vinyl and hold up well without being obvious it is there. So, I'm open to suggestions, and I will let you know what I do and how it holds up.

Sweet! Sealer,..Hmmm, may the force be with you. Heat sealing is the first thing that comes to mind. That would be an expensive , awkward get-up. Hmmmmm. Perhaps urethane?
