Powdercoated Wheels...........Finally

Finally got my wheels done this weekend and put back on the bike. I ended up changing from the stock black color to silver, and changed the front rotors from gold to black.

A guy at work does it out of his garage and said he would do other people's on the list at a good price. Front and rear wheels for $100/set, rotors for $15/each plus whatever shipping costs he has to send them back to you. He'll do other things as well (brackets, clip-ons, triples, etc) just not sure on prices, but from what I can tell, it will probably be cheaper than anybody else. I pulled the wheels off the bike, pulled the tires off the wheels, beat out the bearings and seals, and removed the valve stem. He stripped them down for me, powdercoated them and then clearcoated them. Everything turned out very nice. If I was to do it again though, I probably would have spent some time cleaning up the casting marks on the wheels a little more. You don't really see them on the bike, but when I got them back from the guy and was inspecting his work, I noticed a lot of casting flaws from Honda on the wheels. Nothing he did and really nothing you can see when everything is put together, I'm just a bit anal sometimes about things like that.

I found All Balls Racing has front wheel bearing kits for the VFR for $15.57 plus $4 shipping. The kit comes with bearings and seals.

Hopefully I'll get some better pictures this week, but it was already dark out when I thought about taking them today, so they were done in the garage.

Some chrome 90 degree ones from Patchboy. Only $1.05 each. biggrin.gif
They are easy to install and easy to remove if needed.

For now, I think they're staying gold. I may even get the rear caliper done to match the fronts, but we'll see.

My Ariete valvestems were just a tad more than $1.05 though. sad.gif

As a matter of fact, if your bearings are out, most major cities have a bearing shop. They will measure them and give you right away a new set for a fraction of the Honda price. Here they are called "Precision Bearings", and I remember when I lived in Qu�bec it was "Harvey Bearing". Chech in the phone book.

Works for most bikes, but not all.

I took my bearings from the RC51 front wheel into BC Bearing in Edmonton, they are the biggest bearing supply guys in Western Canada.

They couldn't match them. Dimensions were special. No cross-reference, no joy.

Off to Honda I went. Of course, not in stock. dry.gif

Look nice, can't mount a high pipe, bags are semi-permanently attached to the bike, so when you go into the motel room, you have to remove an inner fabric bag to take your stuff in with you, the bags do not quick-detach. Also limited room in the RH bag because of the contouring for the exhaust.

Did I mention they were expensive????

I tried that as well. They could come up with bearings that were probably close enough, but I didn't have any luck finding seals. The local bearing place wanted about $9 each for the bearings anyways, so All Balls weren't overly expensive.

Actually I think the Beetle Bags are very functional for everyday usage. They open on top allowing you to get things in and out quickly and easily. They allow you to lock things up, and in my opinion look better than anything else because they flow with the lines of the bike. They don't have the room that Givi's do, but have plenty for a weekend get-away or commuting every day.

They are very expensive if you get them from Corbin. I lucked out and found a dealer selling a brand new set on E-bay. Not sure what the story was exactly (ordered in for a customer or just had them in stock), either way they were brand new in a box and I got them for $565.

Smokin' deal! For that price, I wouldn't mind having a set. But a grand+? No way.

Exactly my feelings as well. No way would I pay a grand for them. They just aren't "THAT" great.
