Based on my question that I posted a few days ago http://www.vfrdiscussion.com/forum/index.p...topic=17592&hl= regarding 6th Gen's correct stock fork height (did we EVER get it right?), we made changes to Axman Pat's bike, to try to get it to turn.
First, we checked the fork height, and this setting was "out of the crate" from Honda, so take it for what it's worth: From the flat of the tube cap to the top of the triple was....44mm right side, and a hair under 45 on the left side. Hmmmmm......
So, we set both forks at exactly 45mm, set the clipons "wide" against the lugs, and went for a ride, me on his bike and he on my 5th Gen.
He IMMEDIATELY noticed how much better my bike turns, as I have my forks set at 49mm. I mean, he was amazed how much better handling my bike is. [please note--Pat is a superior, experienced track rider.....he's having trouble with his bike drifting sideways and wallowing in tight, fast turns....sheeeesh!] As for me on his bike....I couldn't get it to turn at all, running wide all over the place....which isn't necessarily unusual for me dry.gif , but this was BAD. We swapped back and forth a few times, just to make sure the wonderful Yellow paint on my bike wasn't fooling us....sort of a visual placebo effect! tongue.gif
So, back to the Not So Busy Little Shop, where we put 4mm of shims on the rear shock bracket, as has been described here many times [see HS's How-To], because Pat wanted to increase his ground clearance [he's the peg-scraping bastid, you know], instead of lose it by raising the fork tubes (i.e. lowering the triples and thus the front of the bike).
Note: We removed the black plastic right-side cover that hides the rear brake reservoir (held by 3 black plastic clips), allowing easy access to the shock bolt/bracket underneath the frame member. We simply put the two shims in place with mechanical fingers...nothing to it. Otherwise it's a very tough thing to do with this cover in place.
The arse-end of his bike now sits much higher, like maybe 1.5-2 inches or so. Wow! The normal horizontal line of the bottom of the fairing (under the motor) now goes "uphill" towards the rear a little bit. We checked sag....about 26mm, but he's two-up fairly often, and perfers that for track use anyway.
So, back out for a test....and it handled much better, but still not as nifty-nimble as my bike. I'd say it was a 65% improvement or so as compared to mine...we'll let Pat chime in with his opinion.
I think it needs to have the front dropped a few millimeters...2 or 3....but Pat wants to hammer some of his favorite, well-known curves and maybe a track day first, hunting for headshake or other bad behavior before deciding if he wants to drop the forks for more turn-in. Today's changes might solve his drifting, wallowing, sliding, pogo-ing, chattering tire, front-end washout problems. I wish I had these problems. pissed.gif
