These were all taken today during another research trip. The weather was overcast and 54� at 10am at Heceta Head, about 70� at 1pm on Hwy 34, and about 65� in Depoe Bay at 3pm, at the Rocky Creek pullout. Saturday is calling for pretty good north winds, so I'd like to get our 101 duty out of the way in the morning by heading south.

Friday, August 18 - Arrive in Newport, get yourselves checked in, and come to an open house at Keithbob's place. Just a few miles north of Newport off 101 at Beverly Beach State Park. I have fresh tuna for the grill, and will have other seafood as well. If you want to grab something to drink and/or share, that would be great.

My house is located about 5 miles north of Newport just off 101. Turn east at the sign for Beverly Beach State Park (123rd St.), then immediately turn south onto Beverly Drive. Coming from the south, you'll literally hook a 180 turn off 101 onto Beverly Drive. Be careful, it's usually dirty. Come up Beverly Drive about 150 yards, then take a left onto 121st Street, a gravel road. Come straight up the road about two blocks, and my house is on the left, a tan house with brick red trim and a red Toyota truck in the driveway and biker trash slouched on the porch.

Type in the above address using Google maps and you'll get an accurate map. Don't use MapQuest - not enough detail. Google even shows you the logging roads leading east behind the house if you're coming on your dirt bike.

If you come from the north, you'll see a very inviting uphill chicane onto Beverly Drive. You can't take it as fast as you think you can - trust me, I've tried it. Go easy through that intersection and stay safe from the brainless campers coming out onto 101.

Saturday, August 19 - Meet for breakfast, then ride through the Coast Range of Oregon. Lunch along the way, as well as great scenery and time for pictures and catching up with friends. Our likely route will take us along the coast southward while it's quiet and clear, with breakfast in Yachats, then turn inland at either Florence or Reedsport and wind east and north for lunch. After that there are several options, and we can either split up or not, taking a trip up Mary's Peak for the view, and winding our way back out to the coast. The weather is calling for temps in the 60s on the coast and around 75-85 inland, so plan on bringing clothes you can shed and put back on as we ride.Call me when you get in to town, or come by the house on Friday evening, and I'll let you know where we are meeting for breakfast. There are still a couple of options I want to check out, but MOST LIKELY we'll meet at 7:45 at the Drift Inn in Yachats, about 30 minutes south of Newport on 101. Saturday evening - The Rogue Brewery will open it's doors, and invite all of us to roll all the bikes inside the brewery, and park them amongst the tables and taps awaiting you on the open brewery floor. Great food, and of course 20 different varieties of Rogue and other ales to choose from. Stroll the VFR concours and ogle fine machinery. There may be surprises, there may not. Rogue is a favorite place for the locals to gather, and there are many who will enjoy the sight of shiny toys and new faces. There will be a wash station for the bikes. Rogue has printed up fliers for this, and so there may be lots of people there.

The two hotels I'm recommending are within 90 seconds ride of the brewery (one within 200 yds). Anyone feeling too good can (will) have their bike locked safely inside the brewery building for the night. Hey, this is about fun!

Sunday, August 20 - Meet for the breakup breakfast, laugh at the fun we all had, and trick some poor fool into hosting this thing in 2007. Hey, BC?

Here are the two places to stay I recommend:

Anyone coming in with a tent and no campsite can pitch in my backyard - lots of room. I'm told all the campgrounds are full up around here. There is nothing but miles of forest land behind me if you'd prefer to just go find a place. Anyone camping in my yard will be welcome to use the showers, etc, of course.

Camping: Beverly Beach State Park, just below my house about 7 miles north of Newport, has camping in the trees, with yurts you can rent. South Beach State Park has lots of campsites, but is a bit more open being just behind the beach dune. Check out both and make reservations at: http://www.oregon.gov/OPRD/PARKS/reserve.shtml

I am taking off Thursday through the following Tuesday. Anyone who wishes to extend their weekend will find a willing ride guide in me. So if you're coming in early or staying late, let me know and I'll help you find fun things to do or places to ride. Remember that Hwy 53 video? It's not far away, and I'd love to take some of you there.

NOTE: The nearest Honda dealership, or bike store of any kind, is a 75 minute ride away from Newport. So be sure to bring whatever spares you think you might need, 'cause ya can't buy 'em here unless NAPA has it. You can't even get decent chain lube in this county.

Here are the two places to stay I recommend.  Get on the stick and RESERVE YOUR ROOM NOW!!!  This town booms in July-August and the rooms are already about 40% gone!!  There are plenty of other places to stay, do a Google search and you'll find lots.  These two are just on the south side of the Yaquina Bay bridge; everything else is across the bridge to the north.

The idea of having the bike securely locked for the night while the hotel is within walking (errr, stumbling) distance sounds very appealing.

Hi all-

I just PMed HS about the FLAF.

The yurts are pretty cool, kind of a permanent tent. Very comfy and cozy with plenty of room.

All motorcycles are welcome. Last year we had VFRs, an SV, an RC-45, and an FZ, at least. My brother is coming down on his Shadow, unless he has his hoped-for FJR by then.

Camping in my yard is free unless your name is Rich. Then it's $80.

Thanks for the HRC tip, Teleskier. I'm recommending that all of you stay at those two places because they are so close to the brewery. This is both for safety's sake and because the local constables watch that area for drunk drivers.

Yes, the Yaq Bay Inn is closest. I've been watching for any reports of vehicle tampering in that area, and haven't noticed anything unusual. Bring your locks and paranoia anyway.

Let's only count on the brewery locking bikes inside if the rider is over his limit. I will check with them again about this, but I don't want to cause them problems (they may need that floor space come Sunday am). They are already being very gracious hosting us with bikes inside.

When planning this trip, if you find Newport is too long a haul, and are looking for a place to stay on the way up or the way back, PM me.

As previously posted, i plan on opening my doors, here in Medford, to the considerate VFRD people - that want or need to break their ride into sections due to distance or what have you. Or perhaps are considering seeing non-coastal riding in Oregon.

I just found out my 20 high school reunion is that same weekend. I know its hard to imagine that I'd rather hang out with people I successfully rid from my life 20 years ago, than meet cool new VFRD riders and go on awesome rides during the peak bike season in coastal OR. I'm shaking my head, too.

Same here I live in portland right as you come out of the gorge on hwy 84 anyone coming south or east can stay here thursday night the 17th. As well as my wife is going to drive her car down so if you would like to load up some things you dont want to carry on your bike She will drive it there for you. PM me if you need directions

My wife and I will be leaving Reno Thursday afternoon sometime, stopping around Medford somewhere then riding up to Newport on the Friday. Hopefully getting there early enough to get presentable for the keithBob shindig!!!!

Yep - booked too, at the Yaquina Bay. Even got around to mounting up my hardbags... got them to fit nicely around the Remus CF with a little fiddling - don't need no stinkin' stock pipes laugh.gif

Now we just have to get our plans together for Thursday around Mt St Helens and finalize our accommodation for Thursday night beer.gif
