Hey guys I was just curious what grade fuel you run in your bikes and why. I've been Using 93 octane since i reached 1000 miles on my new vfr. Just curious what others choices are? Thanks and ride safe.
I have used 87 octane since new. Absolutely no problems whatsoever. It was designed to run on the lower octane so unless atmospheric conditions where you live result in "spark knock" or "pre ignition", I would say you are just wasting money by running a higher octane fuel. I would however, recommend that you avoid fuel with additives, or fillers/octane boosters like ethanol.
87. It's what honda recommends unless you get spark knock. Higher octane fuels burn slower to reduce preignition. There isn't any performance advantage to using it unless you have upped your compression and/or timing .
The owner's manual on the 2006's recommends a minimum of 86 octane. I use 87 octane regular name brand gas and it doesn't run any different than when I've had premium in it. The vast majority of people here just use regular.
Pretty sure, yea. I had a couple of 3-series that called for 89 or higher. I've got a Crossfire, I'm 90% sure "requires" 91 according to the manual. It's probably still BS.
I read an article that explained some manufacturers(example honda and acura) will "require" premium in the Acura, but regular octane in the Honda, even though they share the same engine.
Use the cheap stuff..remember most places bump octane #s now by additives, ethanol which leads to higher engine temps, the days are probably gone where you can buy real quality high octane fuel, save your money, Doug
blink.gif Man I have been using 93....do you guys think there is a problem if I switch to 87....I just had impression and was actually referred to use 93 from the dealer and the techs that work there. Could it just be a copy-cat effect (since 1 person vows it is better they all swear by it kinda thing?)? I am about to start using 87, but I guess the best thing is to let the 93 burn almost completely out and then fill with 87.
Biggest thing is I guess to stick with one or the other for the long run. Also does anyone reccommend any sort of cleaners, additives, or octane boosters for certain occasions??

Chevron Techron FI cleaner. 1/2 a bottle every oil change. Octane Boosters are snake oil. They usually treat 10 gal per bottle, and raise the octane level 2 to 3 points, and the bottle cost $5. That is $.50 to up grage to the next fuel grade that is just $.10 more at the pump. Alot of folks don't even worry about the FI cleaner, just buy gas from reputable stations, Mobil etc...... I use it just for the piece of mind, works well for me so far.
why is it that everytime I click on this topic I'm getting a login request to some other forum. Is someone using a pic or something off another forum posted in this thread? Am I the only one ?

I got that too, but I have no idea what it's about. Brett

Let me look at it!

I'm going to guess they're confusing Euporean and US Octane ratings. In Europe, they use RON, so it's 91 Octane for them. But here in the US, we use PON, which is 87 Octane for us.
I've always used 87 octane (PON) in my bike and it runs just fine. fing02.gif

Yep, every post that he has been active in is the same way. Shame on you camperguy goofy.gif . Save the picture to your computer, then upload it to your avatar.
In simple terms octane is a resistance to a "reaction" for lack of a better term. Explosion is a bad term because an explosion will harm your engine. Anyway, the higher the octane the higher the temp and compression to make that fuel and air mixture "react". So if you are running 91 octane in an engine designed for 87, then you are not getting the most efficiency out of your engine because it has to "work" harder to make that mixture react. In essence it is like popping 2 balloons with different thicknesses of skin, one can be popped easily (87 octane) with a small pin, but the other one takes a little work to get that same small pin (compression) to pop the balloon with thicker skin (91 octane). you can pop both, but it takes a bit more work to do the higher octane, you engine is also working harder to do the same.
I stop off at the airport once or twice a week and fill 'er up with some 100LL .... It makes my RED VFR faster goofy.gif
Seriously though. Whatever the bottom octance is here....87 I think. I hardly pay attention anymore. It's the cheap stuff. This has been asked here before and I think I came to the conclusion in that thread that putting super in the VFR just wasn't worth the $$

HAHA...thought it was me...I was like holy sh*t I am getting pinged by the company network administrator or something....thinking they are on me........wow.....thought I was gonna get fired today........ blink.gif
Awesome thanks for info guys. I tried 87 for the first 1000 miles, 93 for the second 1000 miles, notice no significant performance or milage difference, so back to 87 I go after the comfort of knowing everyone else uses 87 w/ no probs. Thanks guys.
Texaco & Chevron gas stations include the Techron FI additive in their gas. It's not like putting a whole half bottle in the tank or anything, but it is like putting a shot glass or two of the stuff in the tank at every fill-up...
I would also recommend putting the bottled stuff in only when you know that you are going to burn through that whole tank of gas all at once. Then, put the 2nd half of the bottle into the following tank-full.
