Come ride in the beautiful hillcountry near Kerrville.
The plan is to ride "The Sisters" 335, 336, 337 plus any others that are twisty. We also plan to eat as much as possible because you can't spend that much time on twisty roads without working up an appetite.
Kerrville has several hotels of varying quality so there are plenty of options and they are also quite close to each other. So it's no trouble if each of us stays at seperate hotels.
The Super 8(Now Called Whitten Inn) is nothing fancy but it's clean and probably the best value. There are a handful of restaurants within walking distance including a large gas station directly across the street.
I've reserved 7 No Smokers, two double beds, bottom floor.

Warning: There can be lots of animals in this area. Consequently, we won't be riding very early or very late since that's when they tend to come out. Most of what you'll see are small deer and buzzards feeding on dead small deer. Occasionally you might see a camel or llama grazing beside the road too. blink.gif

I set aside 7 rooms at the Super 8 on my credit card although 3 are spoken for already. You are certainly welcome to claim a room if you want. Let me know and I'll keep track of who has requested a room. I'll call to see how they want to handle transferring reservations tomorrow.
Each one is supposed to be non-smoking with two double beds in each room. They're also supposed to be on the bottom floor.
If you prefer to reserve one on your own, the girl I spoke with is Kathy. She quoted me $53.99 for Thursday and $62.99 for Friday and Saturday since it was for several rooms.

I have work scheduled thru Fri am ( my shifts 1900 - 0700 ) . Can a couple of you guys post / pm a cell # or two ? I would like to catch up with you for Fri afternoon , or Sat - Sun rides . There are some decent runs between my place ( San Marcos ) and Kerrpatch as well. We might even get to scarf some of my favorite dish...Roasted Red Duck- with a Mandarin slice in it's beak and my shift toe up it's wazoo...
I'll try to scout some of the likely roads in the preceeding weeks. One caveat for sure - if you head up 55 to Rockspring from Campwood there is a bridge past Barksdale ( in central nowhere ) marked down to 35...WTF... 20 over will get you $ 180.00 poorer.

I was hoping to have mine ready in time but it won't.
RonAyers has been sitting on a order because a can of honda contact cleaner was out of stock! It would still be sitting there if I hadn't called to find out where it was. AND I found I could have saved about $75 by getting the same order thru service honda. grrrrr....... So, I'll have to "settle" for Big Bend in Nov. :-)

I believe you have 335 in mind. Lots of rollers, no really challenging turns ( at sub warp ) , and follows along the Nueces. It's the perfect two up cruiser road, but worth looking at from a VFR perspective. My sekrit top end testing strip is near there. It is easy to plot a 5 or 6 river ride...E & W Fork Guadalupe, Medina, Frio, Sabinal, Nueces with some excellent Historical markers and cemetaries. It's a big loop, but once up to Rockspring, 674 down to Brackettville is a good low traffic stretch. Some play time on Park Rd 37 near Medina Lake would be a very good thing. Anyone coming over on 10 from East can give me a shout, I can show you the "good " way to get to Kerrville from San Marcos area. As stated before, I will scout some and give a " chip seal / tar snake sit rep ".

I think you are right Michael.It was when we were heading back towards Kerrville on Sunday.
We weren't exactly pokin' along on that road. All I remember was coming down into that one water crossing, felt like my stomach had jumped into my throat, and then launching up the other side, all the while realizing I had to make that immediate sharp turn even though the front end seemed really light. That was a blast.

As I remember, starting from HWy 16 from fredericksburg , it was more highspeed twisty stuff, the south part of 16 after crossing I10 interstate it gets very tight and a couple spiral staircases. There may have been some construction on 337 I remember having to stop at a light for 1 bridge under construction(but it was sunday (nobody around) , I only remember on the way back on 337 getting tied up behind a couple Harley riders but its twisty also. I was more or less exploring, since my first time in that area. I had no map and had to mow the yard that day also. 187 north was not bad, higher speed elevation changes and curves.

That spot is on 39. It's an awesome drop off left if you are outbound - with some good speed and up in the power band you an carry a real nice front wheel loft. Same thing on the upslope inbound. I pulled a real nice, smooth 80 ish crossed up wheely that was witnessed by a couple of youngsters in the family car - a very quick look at their expressions suggested it was the coolest thing they ever saw. I have always wanted to have someone set up there with a camera. There is another sharp topped hill that could give a sick ride over the top. There is a side road nearby, so with the blind nature of this thing I have always held back over the top. With a scout though... I think the " workers" have homesteaded the stretch of 337 Leakey to Campwood. They have been at it for over a year.

I would but I'm debating whether to leave early for Friday to beat the deer and traffic and to get some riding done on Friday. I'm only planning on riding a day or two, preferabely on Friday and Saturday. I'll know more as it gets closer.
Not to hijack this thread but is anyone that is attending have a Sargent saddle? I'd like to see one and sit on it in person if possible before I order. If not, I may order one before the ride anyway. This stock '05 seat slides me up to the gas tank and is probably uncomfortable on long trips.

It's not that bad or that long. It's almost finished. I know someone from Campwood in my building and will ask him how it's looking. There isn't really any alternative since that part of 337 is something we probably want to ride down.
Don't forget 55 everyone to the Oak tree at the top of the hill.

I'd just map a route as if there were no construction areas. According to TXDOT's site there are areas on 337 and 187 but some of their details are conflicting so who knows. By the time we get down there it could all have changed anyway.
The only other thing I had considered was for when we stop in Utopia for lunch. Leaving the hotel at 9:00 puts us there a tad early so I thought we could take 462 South, cut over to 187, and then up to Utopia to add a little time.
My plans "for now" are to head down on Wednesday afternoon and go out early on Thursday to get an idea of the roads. That way we can adjust the route as needed for Fri. and Sat.
Now, I just need to throw a new front tire on and change the oil. wheel.gif
Yes, 55 is between Barksdale (just past Campwood) to RockSprings. It's 2 lanes per side of twisty roads that are great for leaning the bike on.
We can do all of this along with the 100 mile loop. If you don't know what that is, that is going from Leakey, out to 55 to the top of the hill where the twisties end, back down to Barksdale, up 336, across 41 and then down to Leakey again. That is a great ride.
Dutch, I'm not sure there is a need to scope the roads out but that is up to you. All roads should be in good shape excpet for a very small section of 337 for about 5 miles just east of Campwood. It may be finished by then. I know all the roads out there so if you want some help making some routes, let me know. I just did this in May for an Aprilia group ride I assited in organizing. It's easier with a map in front of you and going over it on the phone. If you want to do that, PM me and I'll send you my number.
Here is a nice MAP of the Texas Hill Country. If someone can post it on that would probably be better. I'd like to see it in the posts. I would do it but I don't know how nor do I have web space to do it.
I am working hard to make the time to come on this ride. I am not sure for how long or when yet, but I am working it.
A note on State Highway 55; it is a notorious ticket trap on the weekends. I have spent many an afternoon railing up and down that road but only during the week, Monday-Thursday. That is one of those roads best ridden slow on a first pass to recon the LEO situation, and they a few passes at your comfort speed.
Ronimalvfr started this ride a few years ago IIRC and figured I'd let him have first shot at a route so the two of you might work out something since you frequent that area. I've only been down there once and I'm not too picky about the route as long as I get to ride.
As far as me checking out the roads Thursday, well that is a lame excuse to get an extra day of riding in!! fing02.gif

There have been known to be unmarked police cars on 337. Where you can pass, cops have been known to pull people over and it happens when you pass them. This is rare though.
After leaving Vanderpool heading west on 337 to Leakey, you go over a big hill full of twisties. At the bottom of that hill and beyond, there is a DPS officer named Sanchez (yes, everyone knows his name in Leakey) and he gives no warnings. Everyone gets a ticket. Child hood friends get tickets. It isn't folklore, it's true.
Anyway, don't let the speed traps scare you. It's just a few points on a couple of good sections of road and it's on the straight aways, not the curvy stuff. The curvy stuff is too twisty and narrow to setup speed traps. The riding will be enjoyable with mostly little to worry about in the way of speed traps.

Well, I hear that the good troop Sanchez is getting his penile implant that weekend - little does he know that a red VFR and a new girlfriend is the way to rekindle that morning wood !! A I posted earlier, I got popped by a Constable in Barksdale at the bridge that is marked 35 . ( On a Tuesday ). As a fine point , it is 1341 ( or 1314 ?) that turns off 39 in Hunt to get to little Stonehenge ( see avatar).

Will you be posting an agenda? For those of us who can only make it for one or two days, it would be great to have an idea ahead of time what is going on and when.
Ditto on the request for a date on when the schedule and routes will be out.

Ronimal is working on the routes so we should have a better idea next week.
Lost Maples Restaurant will be Saturday's lunch stop. Coopers is the lunch stop planned for Thursday and Sunday.

Duckeater, Sep 17 2006, 12:27 PM I believe you have 335 in mind. Lots of rollers, no really challenging turns ( at sub warp ) , and follows along the Nueces. It's the perfect two up cruiser road, but worth looking at from a VFR perspective.
Yeah, that still sounds fun to me. But I'll be one of the slow ones in the back.
Got my room for friday and saturday nights, I'll be headed down after work friday and maybe catch a short ride before heading home sunday if there is one. May or may not be bringing my roommate, he's only got a few hundred miles on his new bike so he may be somewhat timid compared to a lot of you guys. I just go fast enough to enjoy it and slow enough to make it last. If you guys get too far ahead, just go on and enjoy, we got plenty of maps and plenty of roads, just let us know when and where the food is. biggrin.gif

That's great Nixx!! Glad you can make it. I knew about Zimmerman's accident there on 16. He was really nervous about going round it last year but he conquered his demon. Thanks for correcting me about who set it up.
We've mentioned it to him and he said he'd try but I'll give him a reminder though.

Two things.... On the Friday ride you really should take 55 up to the top of the hill and then head back down. It's right along your way and one of my favorite streches in the area. It's just off Barksdale after you leave Camp Wood (#7 on your map). Just head up till you hit the long straight, wait for everyone to catch up then head back down again. Won't add much time, but it's a lot of fun.
On the Saturday route you should consider taking 102 south out of Blanco instead of 281, 281 is pretty boring (it's my regular route to SA from Austin) and gets a fair amount of traffic on the weekends. Taking 102 to 101 looks like it would be a lot more interesting, but I dont think i've taken that route so maybe someone else can advise.

Ditto on 55. After the twisty stuff there is an Oak tree on at the end of the twisties on the right hand side. Can't miss it. It's the only tree in the area. That's the turn around spot. Other than that, that's a great ride for Friday.

If you don't have Street & Trips, I don't think you can view it.
Ron, I believe you can do a save as webpage in S&T that will allow it to be viewed as a webpage IIRC. Otherwise, I'll convert it over to jpeg when I get home tonight.

Ahh, quite right. 1341 is a nice one though, parallelling I 10 between K'ville and Comfort. Again, if anyone is transiting over from the East, the RR 12, 36, and 473 from San Marcos to Comfort is a slightly rough but nice ride - a pass ( or three or five ) through Devil's Backbone, across a bunch of creeks, and into K'ville via the back door of 1341. Someone shout me up if you are up to it Thurs or Sun.

Here they are as web pages, I'll update them as new EST files get posted by Dutch or Ron. I exported the largest image allowed to let to see as much detial as possible. Those of you with slow connections or low rez monitors be warned.
A few suggestions... Friday, Instead of taking 41 all they way to 83 (#12 on your map) make the right a few miles earlier onto 336. 83 is pretty long and straight, and if you're gonna do 335 and 337 you might as well finish the "holy trinity" (not my term, heard it on the TWT ride a few years ago) and hit all thee of em: 335, 336, 337.
Option for Friday: If you want some different roads instead of doing 337 and 16 backwards to get home you can take 187 north out of Vanderpool (#5 on your current map) up to 39 and come into Kerrville from the west. If I remember right 39 follows a river/creek and it's a bit more leisurely ride which may or may not be preferred, but it's a nice option after having gone 240mi already. Just noticed it�s the same �end� route you have planned for Saturday.
For Saturday I think we might want to swing by Enchanted rock, it�s a nice PhotoOp and the extra few miles, assuming we roll around 8:30-9am, should put us in Blanco sometime around noon for lunch. It�s an easy side trip by either spurring off 87 on Cherry Mountain loop and tying into 965 or just take 965 all the way from Fredericksburg. Then you just hop on 16 down to Fredericksburg and pick up the route as you had it.
Regardless I think the routes look great and I�ll have to see if I can push to get Friday off so I can make both rides.
Looks purty good . Saturday looks like a good butt buster. I am not sure if I will opt out to do a canoe race that day ( in Gonzales - " Come and Take It " ). I would suggest that on Sat route instead of the down and back at SQ 17 , go R on 16, then L on Park Rd 37, R @ 1283 back up to Pipe Creek and L on 16 again. 37 won't disappoint you.
I'll also second Nixx's sentiments . 336 is sweet and has the excellent historical marker of one of the last Apache raids ( or white eye massacre depending on where you're standing )( on L near Leakey as you head toward it ). On the other hand , 83 has that primo photo op roadside park/ overlook by the HEB kids camp on the Tx Nam Vet Hwy.
I too used to hold the " threes" in sacred status - until my Gap Pilgrimage - then I realized the utter blasphemy I had ignorantly been guilty of.
The only thing I didn't like about 336 is the open range land and the cattle guards in 2 spots right in the middle of corners. In Texas if you hit and kill somebodies animal on open range land you are responsible for the worth of that animal not to mention what might happen to you.

Dutch,remember the 2 guys that were in the Army that were down there riding last year.1 was on aRC51 and the other on GSXR 750.Them guys said the last day they rode they just did 337 from one end to the other the whole day.I hope the 1 with the Gixxer made his tour of Iraq and made it back ok.
For sure those two ~ apex cattle guards catch people all the time - real gixxer getters . VFR riders are much too skillfull . I like the open range stuff - just drone the straights and save it for the turns is my riding style anyhow.
