Golden / Silver State 2015 - 8/29 & 8/30 Kernville, Ca

Alrighty boys and girls, time to make this baby official.

After some discussion with last year's attendees, we chose August 29th and 30th as the dates for the 2nd Annual Golden/Silver State Ride. Please check in and let me know if those dates work for you.

In order to "meet in the middle," I propose a basecamp in Three Rivers (https://goo.gl/maps/HgN2y). It's roughly equidistant from LA, SF, and Reno.

Routes for day rides aren't difficult to come by - plenty of good roads in that area.

Sleeping-wise, there's a Comfort Inn in Three Rivers ($139/night) or camping at Horse Creek on Lake Kaweah.

Due to my work schedule, I'll probably have to show up on Friday night, ride Saturday and Sunday, then slog home Sunday night. Depending on the response from the SoCal contingent, I have some point-to-point ride options in my back pocket as well.

If you like scenery, twisty roads, good people, beer, and shenanigans, chime in.

Was originally considering a CW loop down 395 and up 49 when we were discussing Point to Point that was possible. I can reverse the loop and come down 99 to Three Rivers. I would come over Sonora Pass to 99, 380 miles, which involves some 99 but at least I bypass the Sacto to Merced section which I despise even driving a car.

So my dilemma is I will want to continue south from where we meet and stay but Three Rivers puts me pretty far south so I'd miss a lot of the good roads North of there.

My preference would be Oakhurst again and then riding south on your map 1 toward Three Rivers. Looking at the map there is a paved road leaving Bass Lake "Malum Ridge" that goes south and then to Rd222 which continues south and comes out on Auberry Rd. Avoids 41 to Fresno.

Excellent feedback Rich, thanks. I'm totally fine with Oakhurst too - mostly I picked Three Rivers so that it would be easier for the SoCal guys to get to. Depending on what I hear (or don't) from them, everything can be subject to change. No reservations being made or anything like that.

I just drove Malum Ridge road a couple weeks ago - a little bumpy, but definitely good enough. Will keep it in mind.

I'm in! Well, as long as I can keep the wife happy! We haven't taken our vacation yet and until I plan that, she might object to me going on a 4th MC ride in one year! So, off to plan a vacation for her and I first... :wink:

My wife only rides pillion and long trips like these are not her cup of tea. I think if the VFR had better accommodations for a passenger, she might consider it. The last long distance ride (3 full days of riding) was 3 years ago and when we got home, she essentially said, "I can cross that off my bucket list!". As much as she enjoys riding with me, she isn't comfortable enough to be on the back of the bike for more than a few hours. :sad:

I was in a Honda CR-V haha. My brother was out from Florida and we were out exploring/camping/backpacking/climbing around there.

Also was scouting roads for future motorbiking/dualsporting, as always. Speaking of which, CA168 with the Huntington Lake Rd loop is a must!

Last time we stayed at the Kernville Inn (http://www.kernvilleinn.com/) as I recall. Next to a cool diner (Cheryl's) and across the street from a sketchy bar where we can play pool and possibly get stabbed.

I may be able to join you hoodlums after SumSum. I'll be leaving Montrose Fri. 8/21, heading west through so. UT. Moab, Capital Reef, Zion. Was going to Yosemite but I'd love to ride with some local knowledge and you folks might be worth the extra miles. ;) I'd be camping and somewhat reluctant to do a fast, "performance" pace. I would try to keep up but at my own pace.

Truth. Some of us are quick, yeah. But by no means reckless or dangerous - there are all sorts of paces so don't let that be a deterrent.

I just like to ride really fast so I can get to photo spots faster. :unsure:

I'm not positive, but I'm assuming we will be taking hwy 99 down. So you could meet up pretty much in Modesto or pretty much anywhere south of that. I'll let Brian chime in for better detail, but if we are able to leave around 12 like he wants to we will probably be rolling through Modesto around 2ish.

I'm sure Brian can give you a bit more detail though.

But, went to Kernville a couple months ago via cage. Would recommend Caliente Bodfish Rd, which is south of Kernville. And Kern Canyon Rd / County Route 214 going west out of Bodfish towards Bakersfield. It runs along the south side of the river, the main Hwy is on the north.

On the narrow and twisty side, with no real traffic.

Watch out for cows on or along the roads around there. Especially you, Max Swell.

I got to discover this road back in my 20's. Friends and I used to go to the Kern River all the time. We used to go up Highway 14 to 178 over to the river, but one time I decided to take this route. Boy was I ever glad I did! Back then I had a 86 Mustang GT that I drove loved to drive on roads like these. The best part of this is when you come up over the mountain and are looking down on the valley, what a view. Two years ago, 'Stucky' and his friend rode this way when they met up with us in Kernville. They really dug it.

Straight through, at thier estimate puts me there around 3PM........this is my first touring trip so I would rather be safe than sorry. Am I worrying too much?

Also, I have never ridden in that area, anyone bringing any type of rain gear, or is that a waste of space?

Oddly, I just mentioned it to her yesterday, as I knew my work schedule would open up that weekend. All I said was, "Hey I was thinking on going on another Sierra Ride with some of the VFRD members at the end of August". She said,"OK, That's too far for me, but thanks for asking if I wanted to go. Have a good ride and be careful!...So where are we going for our anniversary?" :cool: I say she's a keeper!

6AM sounds early, but the map says 8 hours and 51 minutes, I'm not sure if it is accurate, but I'm sure I will need to stop for food, gas, and bathroom at some point. Straight through, at thier estimate puts me there around 3PM........this is my first touring trip so I would rather be safe than sorry. Am I worrying too much?

Talking about weather conditions in the Sierras reminded me of our VFR outing last Sept. We found our-self riding into an early season snow storm leaving Yosemite. Froze our rear off going over Tioga Pass, then were turned around because Sonora Pass was closed due to snow.

That trip was a month later that this one and we wont be crossing any 9000' passes so seriously doubt that will be an issue this trip.

Option 1. Ride along until Highway 41 and then take it West to 101, then head South.

Option 2. Ride along until Highway 140 and then take it West to 99, then head South.

Option 3. Ride along until Highway 395 and then take it South.

All depends on temperatures, time and my energy level!

One question for the tour pro's......I have a lighter weight, non waterproof mesh style pants/jacket which is great for summer, but will require rain gear, or my lager bulkier "waterproof" pants/jacket suit which may be too hot, but I have only used it for winter riding. It also has quite a bit more protection. I'm torn between the two and have no experience with touring - yet.......any suggestions? I know I can put on the big suit and ride around in our current heat wave, to see how it is in the summer, but I want to see if you guys have more pro's and cons thay I may not even be aware of, to help me make an informed decision.

My 2 cents is wear the mesh and bring rain gear. I wear mesh for anything longer than a day ride. Heat fatigues me so badly - I figure the lesser protection is a fair trade.

Last time we did this ride there were some very hot sections - you can always put on more gear, but you can't always take more off.

The key to touring is to wear comfortable gear and allow for layering, whether layering underneath for warmth or on top for water proofing. This year I might wear my textile suit again but with the rain gear handy just in case. I would suggest picking up a light easy to pack rain suit and wear the gear that will be most comfortable for the temperatures you'll be riding in most of the day. On one trip I actually brought two suits, my textile touring suit for the ride up and back and my perforated leather for the twisty roads.

All I can say is, be prepared for anything, that means high temps and low temps, it's better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it IMO.

I am planning on camping but I do not have a campground picked out. suggestions welcome.

I went out to smoke a cig and did a time calculation. This SumSum trip showed six days of riding w/o rest is too much for this old body. It's five days ride from Denver where I am now; 99Grin kindly putting me up. That leaves one day for off-route exploration and rest. Too Much.

I'm disappointed I won't be joining you folks. Ride safe and have a great time; in that order.

Just finished a three day backpack trip near Mammoth and the smoke all along 395 is terrible from the fire in Kings Canyon. Talked it over with the Mrs and I already did a ride near Shasta in the smoke this summer so unfortunately decided to cancel our reservations for this trip.

If conditions improve I will scramble to make plans but for now may just do day ride Sunday over Sonora and try to connect with the group. Bummed....

My friend Patrick and I will be leaving Fresno Saturday morning... was wondering if you guys had an estimate in regards to the time you will be leaving Kernville Saturday morning? This will help us determine what time we should leave Fresno, and more importantly, try to gauge an adequate meet up location.

Back from 1900 miles of backroad strafing on the 1200. You can actually touch the pavement with the corner of a Givi V35 - and not even lowside. Don't drag a knee in textile pants though...

Smoke/fires were out of control on my ride too - can't blame you for bailing Rich. Shoot me a text if you decide to meet up with us along the way.

I am planning to do a day trip to Sonora Sunday and should be rolling into town about lunch time, ~12:30. Reno to Sonora is ~3.5 hrs about the same as from Shaver Lake. Would be great to meet up and have lunch together, if not I understand not the easiest thing to do.

The conditions around Reno have improved dramatically, smoke is completely gone. From what I've seen on web cams around Shaver Lake the smoke has significantly decreased so that is promising.

Alrighty children, here are our final routes. The Rough Fire has CA180 closed going into Kings Canyon, but it's still open as a through road. Saturday shouldn't be too long of a day - I've added the Huntington Lake loop to the end of Saturday for a little extra fun. Also, if people are willing to get into some shenanigans, Mineral King Road (north of Three Rivers) is an out-and-back option. Haven't ridden it for years, but I remember it being fun.

Sunday is a go as previously planned.

I'll have this all in my GPS and I'm happy to lead the group. It's gonna be hot though - bring your cooling vests, mesh gear, water etc.

HOLY SHNIKES! Looks like today is going to be a real scorcher, supposed to be in the triple digits in the desert areas! Looks like I'll be riding through the core of the heat during the peek too. Unfortunately, I have a little too much work to finish up before I can leave today, although the wife said I don't have wait for her to come home before I leave, still might be leaving at the same time :unsure:

5pm, just landed in Kernville...the snowpack is a little thin this year.

Looks like I'm the 3rd vfr in the Kernville Inn parking lot. Time for a shower and then a beer, intravenously if possible!

Another fine ride on the books! Made it home ~2:30P after leaving the group in Oakhurst at 10A. Bee lined it straight home with one stop in Bakersfield for gas and a quick break.

Nice to meet some new riders along with some familiar ones. Thanks Brian for putting this together!

I always seem to forget to break out the camera when I'm riding. I took a lot of mental pics though. Besides, Brian is the photographer of the group! Haven't had a chance to decompress yet and check the GoPro for footage. Had an issue this morning it said there was an SD error!

I think the last pic is my favorite. Those passes through Wentworth riding with (well, OK, actually behind) you and TC were a blast. And no, I didn't run it again Monday, just had the pleasure of lane-splitting through the Sacramento construction behind two idiots on HD's who had to stop and yell at every car that didn't move over fast enough...back to reality!

Yes, great ride while it lasted for me! Thanks Brian, for organizing the trip! It was good to meet and ride with Brian, Tristan, Darryl, and Noel, as well as meeting Jeff and seeing his super nice ride. I wish I could have finished the ride and been able to get to know you more and ride with you guys a few more days. Brian, your pictures are making me sad that I missed the best parts of the ride, and you even caught the look of disgust on my face in the gas station picture, as I knew at that point my ride was over. I will be practicing on Tunitas Creek Road as it seems I really need to work on the tight stuff - you guys tore it up on the type of roads I usually shy away from.

I saved around $1,200 on the towing and fixed the radiator, which saved almost another $600. So I decided to send my ECM off to Don Guhl, and de-cat my pipe since the radiator was out, and the Jetex Y-pipe has been sitting in my toolbox for over a month now. The egg I used to seal the leak washed out easily with citrus degreaser, so no issue there - now you know it works! Already having withdrawls not being able to ride the 1200, I guess the 3rd gen will have to do for now.

Looking forward to future rides and/or VFR get togethers, if any of you guys are going, I'm in as well!

Jim, glad the egg trick worked and you were able to get home safe and sound. Good trick to know and glad it didn't do any harm to the engine. Hopefully we can all do this again next year and maybe even have all of us do the full route! It was nice to meet you and hope to hear/read about your 1200 mods soon.

That was tame compared to the rest of the weekend. And re the DSLR - just remember it's the person holding the camera, not the camera. I know that sounds a bit pretentious coming from me, but it's true. I know people with $4000 cameras who take shit photos - and I also know a lady who's sold $100k worth of prints and shoots with a Canon PowerShot. A good camera gives you more options, but it'll actually make you take worse photos if you don't know what to do with those options.

Think of it like a motorbike: you could get on a 2007 CBR600RR and be fast right away. If you got on a 1299 Panigale, you'd need a lot of time to figure out power modes, ABS levels, traction control, back torque limiting, quickshift settings etc etc. Ultimately you'll be much, much faster, but only if you know how to use all that crap.

Lastly, Jim good to hear that everything worked out (sort of). Considering how badly that all could've gone, kind of made lemonade out of lemons. Enjoyed riding with you, and rest assured that's not the last NorCal VFRD ride. Probably not even for this year. Bring the 3rd...

I've teethed on an old SLR that is probably an antique now. Old school, no autofucus, manual shutter, 35mm film. Thats going back a few years, but good way to learn the basics. Sending PM for full size pics.

Random rock punctured a 7th gen radiator - definitely not my fault for leading us down that goat path.
