I was bored tonight so thought I would check rates on all the hotels in the area. The Whitten is the place we stayed last year and I guess it's really pretty decent. The girl I dealt with last time is still there and I might be able to talk her down some more if we commit to staying there. I just remembered that she gave us a free beer when we checked in last year. All the places seem to be similarly priced with the exception of the Motel 6 and I've heard a couple of unfavorable comments about it. I would suggest the Whitten again but wanted to keep our options open. What do you folks think?

Does October 19th-22nd sound feasible to you guys? HS, would that work for you or are you stuck with the weekend of the 13th?

Whitten Inn: $70

D Rose Inn: $65-$140 (No TV's)

YO Resort: $80-$100

Inn Of The Hills: $89-$125

Motel 6: $56

Holiday Inn Express: $78-$105

Econo Lodge: $70-$125

Days Inn: $60-$90

Hampton Inn: $89-$109

Best Western: $90-$115

Comfort Inn: $105-$130

La Quinta: $97-$122

I haven't been very active on the forums in a while, but you can count me in. I'll track this thread so I get any updates.

PS... the fiancee and I are headed down to Hill Country this weekend... if any of you guys down south have been in that area lately, could you please PM me and let me know of any adverse road conditions you might have run into? I'm not sure how the heavy rain treated the roads down there...

#7

You said Dirty Sanchez!

I vote for Thurs thru Sun,but I'm flexible either way.

Last year we took aroute to the Hill Country that kept us away from the interstates, but not real twisty.

Got to the west side of Ft Worth and took 377 to 51 in Granbury.

51 to 67

67 to the Highway that runs to Hico

281 to Hamilton

2005 to Goldthwaite

16 to Kerrville with a stop in Llano for BBQ

Not the most fun route, but the fun starts the next day anyway, right.

#8

I didn't run into any problems on my trip down there this past weekend. There were a handful of construction sites, but those were just 1-200' of loose gravel, mainly on a straight and level section of road, and well signed. No delays. The hilly bits had gravel in the corners here and there, but I'm pretty sure thats a fact of life in those parts... as long as you're not trying to drag a knee (and you shouldn't be, the chipseal road surface isn't all that grippy, and your two options in a crash are into the cliff wall or over the cliff edge) its easy to handle. We found water across the road in 2 places, out of probably 50 or so river crossings. No issues with sand or rocks around these areas... Didn't ride 187 between Utopia and Vanderpool, but 470 from Tarpley to Utopia was fine. I think the only place where there was an extended section where you'd want to keep your speed down was 187 from Vanderpool up to about Lost Maples, and when I say 'keep your speed down' I mean 50-60 instead of 90. All in all, the roads are in pretty good condition, and its possible to have alot of fun!

BTW, have people started making reservations or anything yet? I know the frontpage says the rally point is Whitten Inn (Kerrville, right?), so how does this work? Everybody make their own reservation? Tell them you're with the VFR group? I dunno, I've never been part of one of these things before...

I'm assuming the locals will be off on a ride Thurs, while the out-of-towners like myself (DFW) will be on their way down; vice-versa for Sunday. With that in mind, should we plan to ride some of the more popular roads in the area either Fri or Sat so newbie's like myself don't miss 'em? Or should we skip the popular roads because they are too popular on the weekends??

For anyone riding from DFW on Thurs:

I plan on riding down from Lewisville to SW of Fort Worth then down to Kerrville somewhat directly, while trying to explore some decent roads along the way. Looking at Streets and Trips, here are some thoughts/questions:

>Has anyone taken the 16 most of the way (from Comanche pretty much straight south to Kerrville)?

>590 Comanche to Zephyr looks like it might be fun

>281 is a little too straight and boring for me - would like to stay on more FM roads (did this once before)

>1030, 1031, 580 from San Saba all look interesting - anyone know these roads?

>965 or 2323 towards Fredericksburg?

>Not sure if I'll be able to get up early enough to make it out of the DFW mess before Thurs rush hour from Lewisville; may leave at 9 and plan on arriving at 4, 5, 6 - however long it takes...

>Anyone have a good GPS smile.gif If not, I may just buy one so I don't have to print 100 maps like I did last time...

choices, choices...

I was going to try to meet up with a few of you on Friday, but I will not be able to make it back from New york in time. Saturday and Sunday I am riding a bicycle 150 mile from San Antonio to Corpus Christi for the Valero MS 150. Timing got me! Besides, Honda says my VFR (02-05 wire harness recall) is not safe to ride!!!!! Seems like that makes me want to ride more!!!! weeeeeeee... Isn't the danger part of the fun???!

Have fun and enjoy my back yard! The Motorcycle stop in Leakey has moved about a half a mile further west on 337. It is a nice stop and a great place to hasssle Harley riders if that is your cup of tea. Coyote Ranch on Hwy 16 is supossed to be a good MC stop as well. I have never seen any bikers there since I ride ealry on weekend mornings.

It's officially October now! Guess we ought to talk about a route, huh?

Are there any worthy restaurants near Camp Wood, Barksdale, or Leakey?

I'm working on a Friday route that will hit the Sisters. Anybody want to handle Saturday's route? Personally, I'm content with riding the Sisters both days but then again as long as I'm riding I don't care where we go. Suggestions and recommendations are very welcome!

#14

My mistake, it was 187 and 337 I was on , the old Kerrville road , its does also go south of I10 , but I havent been on it, just north of I10.

I mistakenly came across Old kerville road it running down I10 , but as I remember taking the exit you could turn left or right , but it may not go much of anywhere south of I10.

DFWers, here's my preliminary route - as you can see, it's a mix of twisty and direct roads.

Hopefully the link works....

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&...mp;z=9&om=1

This should take all day Thurs. I expect to leave my house in Lewisville after rush hour (9am-ish), and make it to Kerrville around 5-6pm, including plenty of breaks.

If other DFWers have a different route they would prefer, please let us all know - this is just a starting point....

Brian

p.s. my bike's in the shop - hopefully will hear good news today, otherwise.....

What time do you think you'll be goin' through Comanche? We'll have to make a group decition, but HS (I think), gswanson, and myself will be coming down from the OKC area. Maybe we could meet you somewhere to ride the rest of the way to Kerrville. But, if you leave your house at 9ish, I'm thinkin' you'll be way ahead of us. Just throwin that out there.

#17

hondalover,

That might actually work since I'll be taking a lot of breaks. I really don't know how long it will take to get down there - probably early afternoon, maybe 2ish? I assume you'll be taking a westerly route down around DFW?

#18

Well guys I am out of this one as well, too many bills not enough cash, need new tires - new chain. Not enough in the budget. Thanks for the invite, the bills just keep piling up to stop me from doing this ride.

Brian,

It looks like I'll be going more south than west and need to stop in at a friend's house along the way so I probably won't meet up with you DFW'ers till Kerrville.

DuckeaterMan, am I out of the loop. I have that weekend off , but that is my peak weekend before a damn triathlon . I have had major PC issues lately . My riding has taken a third seat behind a race canoe and a bicycle . I will try to get out and play some . I can do some route recommendation, but have not laid eyes on most of it lately .

Dude, where have you been hiding? Hope to see ya again!

Nooo....I know what it is. You just don't want to ride through West Texas again!!

I understand the bills though. This will definitely be my last ride for the year and next year is already looking slim.

Please take plenty of photos (maybe some video too) and post up.

I wish you all great times and safe riding (and only a few butterflies).

Oh, how I wish my work schedule was more flexible.

Maybe you can all come up here for my soon-to-be-annual "Goodland to Topeka" I-70 ride. 350 miles, with none of those annoying turns.

Hopefully we can all meet up at INDY in '08.

Regrettably, I must pull out.... I don't see that there's going to be anyway for me to be in shape to make this ride... plus my viffer is totally wasted...

Thanks for putting this together and the invite. Everyone have a great time as I'm sure you will!!

Rob

RosscoBI had every intention of going, but just got a veto.

My wife's grand mother is having her 95th birthday in Philly. Her health is not great so we feel like we have to be there.

On the other hand she did sign me up for the Freddie Spencer school in Oct 15th - 17th. I'll be going straight to Philly from Vegas.

Rob,

We're just glad you are able to let us know. Heal up, get that new bike and perhaps we'll see you next year about this time!

#30

I doubt I'm going to make it, either. Not sure how many of you saw my post the other day, but I managed to ride the VFR off of a hillside on Mount Magazine. I don't have a left footpeg, and my left radiator is currently with my friend trying to get repaired. Even if the bike does make it back to rideable condition, my financee is SERIOUSLY freaked out about the fact that I crashed, even though I'm completely fine... and she's definitely not going to take kindly to the idea of me taking off for another sport-riding weekend so soon after. I'm still hoping it works out, but probably best to count me out for now. sad.gif

I called and reserved a room a couple months ago, but they just wrote my name down - wasn't very official....

Hell yeah!! Let the beautiful weather begin!!

OK, I've finally come up with a Saturday route that I hope will be suitable. Sorry for the delay.

Again, we'll play it by ear and decide that day as to where we stop for sightseeing.

Lunch is planned for a place called The Smokehouse BBQ in Camp Wood. There's also a Mexican food place that is supposed to be good. I've never been to either one but keep hearing good things from others.

Look like a great route Dutch, I think you've done an awesome job organizing this years ride (as well as last years).

If you'd be interested in covering not quite as many of the same roads both days, I'd suggest 1888 and 473, both east of Kerrville. You can make a nice loop of it heading out of Fredricksberg to 1888 into Blanco, then 165/2325 into Wimberly, cut down 12 Till it hits 32, Take 32 west across the Devil's Backbone till you can split off on 473 heading back towards Kerrville (crossing 281). From there you can tap into 16 and, if you want, add in as much of 337 etc. to finish up (or start if going backwards) the ride. (Loop thru Vanderpool/187/39 and you're clocking in at 260mi. for the route).

Anything east of 281 is a fair bit more relaxed so it may not be as appealing to a number of the attendees and I haven't been out there in a year so I cant make any claims to road conditions. Just tossing it out there.

For what it's worth I hear 55 (just about my Favorite road out there) is really dull once you hit the top so you're Saturday ride looks best!

Looks Like I'm in! Just spoke with Molly at Whitten Inn and she had room for me however my plans are a little diffrent. Will head down Saturday morning by myself found out kinda late that this was the weekend so Saturday is all i got, no matter. Could be in hill country around noon or so but I know how troublesome it can be to hook up on the road....just make sure your GPS locators are on and I'll sneak up behind you guys...

Need to mount a set of 2CT's tomorrow and do some uploads to the garmin and should be close to ready... Would like to ride down from Fort Worth if anyone else cant get out till Saurday let me know. Thanks Mike for pulling this together Again!

Nixx, I'm good with any route you guys want to run and I have wanted to do the Devil's Backbone too! And yes, 55 does straighten out at the top. Can you email that S&T file to me? md_schroeder at sbcglobal.net

S&T file sent. Feel free to modify, ignore, corrupt or whatever as you see fit.

Hope you get the "ol' girl" running, we need good ride leaders cuz nobody wants to follow my slow ass! :pissed:

Oh, and I wasn't really sure, is the Flaf coming down for this ride? I see you're marked as the Flaf Holder but I didn't see any official mention of it.

I'm headed out to explore NM/AZ (maybe a bit of south Utah) after leaving Kerrville so if it is headed out that way, I might be able to arrange a meet with someone.

Everybody stand by for a route change. For now, Saturday's ride will stay the same. Friday will change to Nixx's route. I will have printed routes available each morning for those interested.

Yep, the FLAF will be riding with me to Kerrville whether I get the bike going or not. The plan was to pass it off to Tightwad after the meet so he could take it with him to Arizona in November but you guys can work out who takes it. Here's a thread I started.

I called last week and they said they still had me on the list. Although once I said I was with Michael Schroeder and VFRD and just said "yeah, your in here." Kinda made me think that they never put the room in my name. Looking forward to getting away!!!

I've had a room reserved for a bit over a month. I just got off the phone with them and their response to the question, "do you have me as a part of the Micheal Schroder VFRd room block?" was "yes, you're with the 'motorcycle rally'." Mike's name seems to confuse them. I had the same feeling when I first reserved the room. I think what we have here is a failure to communicate. On the upside, it seems I do have a room, but on the downside, it's not at all clear what I'm really a part of. (not that there's anything new about that)

Yeah, apparently the girl "Annette" that I set this up with is no longer there. Tonya mentioned this morning that they only have about 5 reservations for the entire hotel during those days. Makes you wonder?

Maybe something to do with the asbestos problems or plagues of locusts she mentioned.

Asbestos is one thing but locusts are too damn much like butterflys with higher densities. :o

dutchinterceptorYeah, apparently the girl "Annette" that I set this up with is no longer there. Tonya mentioned this morning that they only have about 5 reservations for the entire hotel during those days. Makes you wonder?

Maybe something to do with the asbestos problems or plagues of locusts she mentioned.

Maybe thats a good sign, the more desolute the better the riding.

I'll be leavin the house about 5am on Saturday morning, should be down by 8 am , is that too early for you guys?

I was hoping at the last minute I could make it, but I've got some things I need to take care of around the house (honey do's, kids, etc). You guys have a fun get-together and safe ride. Hope to make it next fall.

Take care,

ki-speed (Mark)

Thursday...

Although not totally back together my bike is hopefully up for the trip now that I have found the monkey in the wrench. Since I also have lousy luck, I've recently had a personal issue jump up and slap me in the face. Consequently, I won't be leaving Tyler until around 1pm so I won't be in Kerrville until after 7pm I'm guessing. Make sure the hotel attendant(Whoever is still working there) gives you a room on the outside and on the bottom floor and preferrably close to the same area so we can park our bikes together.

Everybody be safe and I look forward to some good fun!

I can't guarantee cell coverage for Alltel but if you need to contact me for anything: Michael "Dutch" Schroeder (903-245-nineteen eighty two)

Friday's Route Updated...

Total should be somewhere around 275 - 300 miles. I plan for KSU at 9am at the Whitten Inn. Not so technical but with lunch, misc. stops and some photo ops thrown in it should make for a good day's ride.

The two top sight-seeing stops seem to be Stonehenge II and Lonestar Motorcycle Museum so I've marked them on the map. Whether we stop or not will depend on the group's interest. According to Nixx there's a scenic turnout that was the sight of some indian orgy or somesuchthing and I've marked it on the map also.

Lunch is tentatively set for Daisy Dukes Bar & Grill. Yep, the waitresses are supposed to be dressed like Daisy.

Saturday's Route...

The route will be mostly curvy and should be around 300 miles so be prepared for a long day. KSU will be at 8:00am at the Whitten.

Again, we'll play it by ear and decide that day as to where we stop for sightseeing.

Lunch is planned for a place called The Smokehouse BBQ in Camp Wood. There's also a Mexican food place that is supposed to be good. I've never been to either one but keep hearing good things from others.

Sunday's Route...

I haven't plotted anything since everybody will be headed towards home but I will head down 16 - 337 to Camp Wood and then up to Rock Springs. I'll work my way back north and east towards Marble Falls and then on to Tyler trying desperately to stay away from anything straight. Depending on time I might even cut back over to Llano and eat at Cooper's BBQ.

8am is when I planned on leaving the Whitten Inn for the day's ride but might wait a minute or two if you're not there.

What is the route circulation (clockwise or counter)? My plans have changed and will be hoping to meet up with ya'll on Friday but now that the route and lunch destination have change dramatically (for me) this will be tougher.
