Thoughts.

Sounds too low to be done correctly. Speak with the mechanic that is going to do the work and ask him if he has slide pin stoppers, what they are, and what they are for. If he can answer those questions it should be done correctly. Ask them to also give to you their measurements of the clearances.

If you have less than 20k miles, it's a waste on money anyway IMO! wink.gif

Agreed. I am doing mine every 36K. Can't say I would recommend your service intervals though

I know the service manual says check valves at 16k--any one actually had to have them adjusted with that mileage/.

+1.gif ... I'm at 13,500 and will hit 16K by the end of this month... SO... who's ACTUALLY had to have them adjusted at this mileage?

I have 8400 miles...had other Hondas with supposedly 12,000 - 16,000 intervals, never needed it. Last one I checked myself was an 1800 VTX at 16,000(real simple)...Nope, rode it to 26,800 (owned it 22 months), sold it. Bike has sold again, but still in the area. Bike now has over 48,000, no check, still going.Last bike I traded this year on my VFR was a CBR1000RR...now has around 16,000 no probs. CBR600RR(04) I had now has 27,000...thrashed hard by new owner...never checked. I agree with the "save your money for something else" folks....IMO........................RIDE IT..... fing02.gif beer.gif

Took mine to the local dealer at 17,000 miles for the valve inspection. I stopped by the next day and the tech, (with whom I have a good rapport) had the disassembly completed and was doing the inspection. He was very through and by the book. No adjustment needed. Charged me $300.00.

Illinois Honda dealer $230 for my 5th gen.

I bought my '02 from my best friend. He is NOT mechanically inclined and very fastidious. He had the valves checked at 16K per the manual and all were in spec. We both trust this dealership implicitly.

I am at 25K and will likely not do the valve check at 36K.

I had two out at 16K. sad.gif

Probably a ton of variables, including how often you ride in VTEC land. . .. unsure.gif
#12
I had a few out of spec at 16K (3 or 4). I wouldn't skip the inspection.

I'm sure that was a mistake; just read the posts on this site, the manufactures maintenance specifications and recommendations do not really need to be followed laugh.gif

I am way overdue for my valve clearance inspection. I was going to do it over the winter. The thing is, the bike is running so good right now that even if they are out of spec, I would like to keep them that way. LOL....

I have about 32,300 on my bike and looked at the spark plugs today. They tell me the valves are not right, but there is nothing I can do, I only have the bike and had to ride it 200 miles today to a work retreat. I have not had time up to now to do it, but its killing me knowing how much better it should be performing. Well, its first thing on the list when I get home monday.

with all your money this is nothing! having talked to you at Steves house a few months back, i think you could do this! get a couple of other guys and learn together............you could split the job (front/back) over two weekends. try the front first, much easier access................wait a few more weeks until the sky is dark with wind blown sand and mobile home awnings................(desert living sucks!) BTDT!

How can your plugs tell you anything about your valve clearance? Adjust clearance isn't going to make a real effect on performance either, in fact having them not tight will reduce your performance slightly as there will be less overlap.

how does it effect your warranty if you skip that service? if you skip the 16k inspection, or don't have proof that it was done, and you burn a value? is it covered? just curious. Extended warranty would be eliminated engine wise if they care. thoughts?

your correct again.........even .005" out of adjustment could not be seen on the plugs. clearence increases as cam and tappet wear..........clearence decreases as the valve pounds against the seat, causing a groove in the valve face. they are cancelling each other out to a small degree. my 5th gen is at 30,000 and has not been done to my knowledge..............STILL HAULS BUTT!!!!!!!!!

Guess it's up to you, slow. How anal are you? The trick is, dealer or not. Lots who have checked themselves, (not saying all), have found it to be fine. Some have found them out, kind'a rare.

A lot Who have gone to the dealer, have been questionable.

Eg.: Lobster,

Took to the dealer. "Oh it's a mess needs a lot of work".

Lobster, "Ok, do it".

Dealer, "Gonna be a few weeks, and bend over".

Lobster, "Make it right".

Lobster upon p.u., "can I have the old ones"

Dealer, "What parts".

Mind you, these aren't exact quotes, but damn. The, "How too", is the s#!t, warrenty or not. To what degree do you trust your dealer, is the ULTIMATE question.

??????????

Did mine at 13,500. All in. Did the reg. valves, to put them on the mean. There are fewer more anal than me. Could have let it go. But that's not me.

Best advise,...check the bank account, figure what you can afford to lose, then,....flip a coin. (assuming it doesn't run bad).

My wife works as an adjuster for a national extended warranty company for almost every brand of cages. When the shop calls her, they say what repairs are needed and how much parts/labor will be. It's her job to look it up and see if the job is covered under warranty, parts prices, and labor time alotments. She can deny approval if there is no history of maintenance. What they DON'T tell you is that if you have no receipts for regular maintenance, you CAN write a letter stating that you performed the work yourself making sure to list exact work done and (uh hmmm) dates/mileage that you "did" the work. In most cases, that will bring a smile to your warranty adjuster's face and ..........slam! Warranty work APPROVED. Your results may vary.

I did my adjustment around 32K miles or so. I had 6 valves that were tight. Based on that, I adjusted all the valves to the loosest tolerance within spec to avoid having to worry about adjusting them again for a long time. I noticed no difference in performance afterward (didn't expect to) but did notice quite a bit more noise.

TO Honda always quoted me $xxx if we check it, things are in spec, and another $xx to $xxx if not, depending on how many need adjustment and whatever else. 16k and 32k no adjustment, only at 48k did it need shims. Mine's not a VTech though. biggrin.gif

I just got a quote from the Local Honda Dealer in Georgetown, TX. He quoted 5 hours @ $75/hr = $375.

On a VTec, just to check the clearance, you have to do the expensive part of your valve service (remove and replace the cams) twice. On a non-VTec you just open up the valve covers and check, if they are in spec just close it back up.

Lou,
I'm at 42k miles w/o checking the valves yet! blink.gif I may just drop another low mileage motor in I have laying around instead of checking them ever! tongue.gif

I post this pic every now and again. This is what an entire 16K service cost on my bike at 16K. I'm sure this is at the top end of the cost. Let the flames begin.

i did the valve check myself at 32k. i bought the bike at 21k...former owner promised the valves had been done at 20k, but i didn't believe him (stupid me forgot to check the VIN on the frame of my bike...turns out there is no VIN, no plate anywhere, meaning it's a *replacement frame* on a clean-title bike...).

there were two valves just barely too tight...and i found replacement shims already there...so at least the former owner must have been truthful about that part.

the independent shop with the best reputation around the bay area quotes 8 hours of work to check all the valves on the 6th gen bike, more if they need to be adjusted.
i don't see how any shop could possibly check all the normal/vtec valves on a 6th generation in less than $700 of labor charges.
