I was thinking of replacing my pads over the winter. I was just wondering if anyone had any advice as to what mileage to start to think about it. Also, does anyone else's front brakes sqeal? Mine only do it when I'm pulling up to a slow stop. Once I apply a little rear this goes away. I wonder if this is a common problem or not. My 919 did the same thing. Are there any pads that anone prefers over stock? Maybe it's just my bikes way of telling me to lay off the Oreos...
My bike just ticked over 26k miles and I'm pretty sure my rear pads are toast. All I did was perform a visual inspection and it doesn't look like I have any pads left. My front pads on the other hand are probably about 50% worn.
Most of these miles are highway miles and I always use my rear brake when coming to stops around town and such. YMMV.
i changed all three when the rear brake started to shudder... yes i like to get max mileage out of my parts!!! 49000km's first set. although i am on my 7th set of tires! the rear was totally burnt... front left was probably 15% right hand side maybe 20-25% mine seemed to squeal every once in awhile... i never sweated it.

My rear pads lasted 12k on my 04. I could of gone another 1-2k but they were pretty close. I ride aggresively, in the mountains.

My 6th gen and fifedogs both shudder when the brakes get hot. I put on new pads and it didnt help. I think it may be charateristic of the bike. It only does it when in the mountains and riding hard.
I replaced front and rear pads on my fifth generation VFR at 20k miles.I do a lot of high speed , hard braking backroad riding.I was surprised that the rear break pads wore at almost the same rate as the front even though I rarely use the rear brake pedal.As to which pads to use for replacements,I strongly recomend sticking with the Honda pads.I measured my discs with a micrometer when I changed my pads and there was virtually no wear at all.Some of those aftermarket pads can be pretty hard on your discs.
My fourth gen has the original rear pads and they look to be good for another 60k. on it with 40k miles on the clock(30k of them were me). Although, I've gone through two sets of fronts so far, but I only use the rear when I'm stopped or if the traction is low.
As most have said, style of riding goes along way in determining brake pad wear. The manual gives specifics on min thickness of pad material so that would be my guideline, however if you wanted to try a different pad( maybe affecting pad life) you could go with a softer compound or harder depending on what your riding style is. I got 15k miles out of the oem's with moderate aggressive rides.
