My '02 with 26,000 miles has had no problems (outside the melted ground connector), but lately it will idle high while in gear then drop when in neutral. Literally = coming to stop, down to 1st - 2000 rpms, put it in neut - 1200 rpms, put it first - 2000, back to neut - 1200, put it second - 2000, etc... I have also had a few times when I was rolling through a parking lot, clutch in, blipping the throttle to alert pedestrians, and the bike would die after two or so blips. Is this a starter valve sync issue?
I also noticed that if I roll on the throttle very gently (in gear), when I cross 4,000 rpms, the bike hesitates and losses power momentarily. I'm guessing it's just the fuel map going lean and is more pronounced because of the higher mileage. Does this sound normal?
you have an air leak. most likly on the intake manifold vac line. tighten all the clamps and spray card clean in the area while the bike is running...if it surges.. you found the leak.

not to doubt, but wouldnt an air leak manifest itself no matter what gear he is in? i believe he is stating with the bike not moving and clutch lever pulled, if he puts it in gear his rpm changes.
several of the symptoms to show an air leak though...I.E the blipping of the throttle
Yea I agree some sort of leak - but the starter valves operate in that range of RPM, syncing them would help. Its a task though!! Every one of my friends who owns a vtec had startervalves out of spec! We hooked up the vacuum tool and turned the screws to equalize them and "boom" the thing idled much smoother! (sorry I just saw John Madden on a TV commercial)
The 2000 RPM idle sounds a little fishy, but the dying with the clutch in and blipping the throttle is a well documented glitch. Your clutch switch is not making. With the bike in gear and the clutch in you should see the RPMs rise about 200 - 300 revs as you start to let the clutch out. If it's not doing this, then the switch probably isn't making when the lever is pulled all the way in. The ECU (through the clutch switch) steps the idle up just before the clutch engages.
To make the bike die, while moving, pull the clutch in enough to disengage, but not enough to make the switch and then blip the throttle. It will shut itself off like you hit the kill switch. Once again, it seems that the ECU is trying to compensate for something it doesn't understand - in gear and a sudden throttle and RPM change but it can't see that the clutch is pulled in.
Try adjusting your clutch lever out a couple of clicks and listen for the sound of the switch. If that doesn't help, check the switch with an OHM meter. Good luck!

There you go! That sounds exactly like what I though when it happened. It felt like I had accidentally released the clutch, I even checked my hand to make sure I was holding it all the way back ( I typically just pull with one finger so it rarely goes all the way back, although this time it was).

Bump up your idle to 1400-1500. That will cure the clutch switch problem unless the switch is bad.
