Speedo Jumping Around?

I just had a shop take off and reinstall my front wheel for a tire change (damn screw!), and when I picked it up and rode home, I noticed the speedometer jumping around instead of staying steady on one speed. Not just a variation of 1-2mph either... I'd be cruising along at steady state and the speedo would be reading 77-80-77-80-77-74-77, changing about twice per second. It seems to like 3mph increments...

I did a search and turned up alot of threads on speedos either a) not working, or B) reading waaay off. Mine still seems fairly accurate, just... indecisive. Anyone experienced this before? I'm thinking maybe the shop messed up the sensor somehow while reinstalling...? I really have no idea. Any advice is appreciated.

on the 03 non abs, the speed sensor is the black object mounted on the front sprocket cover. it has a delrin nut on the end that has to engage the bolt head that holds the front sprocket on. i put mine on incorrectly once and pushed the delrin 'socket' too deep on the shaft. it barely engaged the bolt head on the sprocket and would give me spurious speed readings until it finally just quite. pulled it off, pushed the delrin 'socket' down to the end of the shaft again and reinstalled, insuring good alignment and problem went away.

Wow sckego, that is one bad VTEC surging! :goofy:

On the serious note, the speed jumping must has to do something with a sensor as turtlecreek suggested.

It's common to have alignment/contact issues as mentioned and sometimes the little delrin piece will crack, it's $6.00 from Honda.

But why would the dealership have messed with the speedo sensor while doing a wheel change?

Umm, perhaps they're idiots and replaced your front sprocket accidentally?

Hmm, whoops. As a matter of fact, I did have them put on a new chain and sprockets while the bike was there... but for some reason I thought the speedo sensor was off of the front wheel. In any case... forget what I said about it being 'accurate, just indecisive.' On my morning commute today I was turning 5K in top gear and only doing 24mph!

Darn shop guys must've put on a stunter sprocket or something... :goofy:

So, let see if the Honda dealer has one of those delrin doodads in stock...

thought you could fool us with only giving up half the info didnt ya!! :goofy:

Mebbe one of the shop monkeys was jumping around in a Speedo and scared your bike ;) jk - definitely a speed sensor, easily fixed.

Yup, that appears to be the issue. The nut is pushed so far onto the speedo sensor shaft that it broke through the bottom of the nut... now when I look at the nut, I can see the rectangular end of the speedo sensor sticking out. I tried to pull the nut off of the sensor, but it's on there quite tightly, and I don't want to break it. I'm thinking of taking it back to the shop tomorrow so they can wrestle with it. What I can't figure out is, why would they mess with that part? Its just the two bolts to take it out, then put it back on when done. Why would they shove the nut all the way down on the sensor shaft, instead of leaving it as it was?

If anyone has any tricks to getting that thing off besides just brute-forcing it, let me know... I hit it with some WD40, but that didn't help, and I'm hesitant to take a pair of visegrips to it cause I don't want to break the nut. <_<

Find out how it's done, then let the shop fix their screw up. Think of it this way: you'll be doing a good deed for the next guy who unassumingly comes in for a chain and sprocket swap, and allowing their tech to gain some much-needed education. :warranty:

I agree. That is an installation error on the tech. You shouldn't have to replace or pay for their screw-up. When they put the front sprocket back on, they didn't line up the nut with the bolt that holds the sprocket on. So they actually didn't shove the nut down. When they tighten the cover back onto the case, the nut was then pushed too far onto the sensor shaft. As Seb stated, allow the "tech to gain some much-needed education".

I Almost re-assembled mine like that. I says to myself, self, I says, it didn't come apart that hard, and I recall folks who had the same problem. I looked, and fixed it, then finished re-assembly.

It's an easy mistake, that a dealer shouldn't make. :goofy: Say that 10 times really fast.

exactly as mine was. you can simply take a screwdriver and 'walk' the socket up the shaft. i'm with you though....let the dealer take care of it incase something was damaged. when i put mine on, i forgot to align it. put the screws in by hand and ratcheded the screws on in tight. never really even felt the delrin pushing down onto the shaft. (i thought to myself, self...shouldn't you align that.....nah, it wouldn't have went on so easy if it wasn't aligned....) ooops!

Thanks a lot for the tips. This fixed an issue I was having with my speedometer after replacing the chain and sprockets. Saved me a trip to the dealer.

There would be a lot of ppl that would have NO idea of how fast they are going if that was the case. :wheel:

Just replaced chain / sprockets and after a while noticed the speed jumping around. Came to a stop, then hit a quiet straight stretch and wound it out a bit.
Speed went up to 120KM then for the most the remaining (calm) ride home I was actually doing 0. It would register worse than bingo night when I revved it
up a little. Came home, let it cool, took off the sensor, then put back on, peeked in behind the cover and walla - she no contact the nut.

Really glad I found this thread. Now I'll go back and gently lever it down and re apply properly.

Thanks to all those who struggled before me. May my struggles help you.

This is just another example of the value of the value of web forums.:fing02:

I just did my chain and sprockets last week and the other night my speedo went bonkers too.
I'm relieved that it sounds like I won't have to spend any money to repair it.

Oh SCREW!!!! I just did my chain and sprocket last week and the speed reader was almost the ONLY thing I didn't have a problem with..... :comp13:
Now you guys got me worried that something is gonna bl.. :squid: :squid: :squid: :squid: :squid:

I had a the same problem with my speedo, not registering a valid speed and it turned out to we a worn sensor cup. Here a few pictures:

This is the complete harness I replaced.

Cup.JPG
This shows the cup that fits over the nut that drives the sensor.
There was significant wear and the nut actual spun in the cup.
An on the road fix was to line the cup with electricians tape and do a press fit.
It works for a while but the tape gives out because of heat.

Now if there is a replacement part for the cup, my dealer didn't mention it. I would appreciate the part number if there is one available. That would be quick and easy fix.

I know there is a part number for the delrin nut ('cup') that's worn out in your pic. I don't have it handy, but I know that if you can find the parts microfiche of that sensor it's listed on there. Try ronayers or something, shouldn't be too hard to find.

Here in the US they sell it separate for $5.00. :fing02:

Yup.

REPLACEMENT HINT: The stock configuration is the nylon cup, being pushed fully on the shaft. This causes the very end of the cup, to be too close to the end of the bolt.
The fix: leave about .100" from the seat, on the shaft. This will split the diff., from the cup not being enough on the shaft, OR on the very end of the bolt.

(Did VipeRon's last night).

Thanks for the part # and the mounting spec. Guess I will now have a spare in inventory. :excl:
