Does anyone really look at the posts in here? Anyway, I just bought a 2007 VFR because I wanted something a little sportier than my ST1100. I called Progressive and had them add the VFR to my policy. I've been paying around $600/yr for insurance on the ST (2002 model), and was floored then they told me that the same coverage for the VFR was going to be $1300/yr. Is this commensurate with what you guys are paying? I expected it to go up, but not more than double (IMG:style_emoticons/oldemoticons/pissed.gif) . I'm 49 with a spotless driving record!

Keep looking around, I pay about 500 a year with full coverage.
Something is not right, you shouldn't be paying that much. I only carry liability so I'm not really sure what the going rate for insurance is but it has been discussed here before and the figures you got are very high. My dad went from an ST1300 to a CB919. His rates went up as well, he called the insurance agency and explained that he was riding a smaller bike that was worth less money than his former bike and they gave him a much lower rate, so that might be worth a shot.
I second what everyone else said. Keep looking at other insurers. Their rates vary widely. From state to state and even person to person. I have State Farm and pay a little over six hundred a year for full coverage. I am told they use displacement of the motorcycle as one of their main criterion for setting their rates.
I have a 1999 ST1100 and a 2004 VFR insured with Progressive. I do not carry collision on them. I just paid my bill last week. $175 for 12 months. I'm married, 46, no tickets or accidents.
Be glad. I was just quoted in Rhode Island $2400 for a years insurance (full coverage) which ONLY applies if I pay it all in ONE LUMP SUM!!! If you pay it in payments, it goes up to $2600!! (IMG:style_emoticons/oldemoticons/warranty.gif)
Needless to say I am keeping my MASS residnecy for another year or two (where I pay $550 a year) until my bike is paid off, then becoming a RI resident and insuring the bike with only the BARE minimum liability insurance.
I love how the state makes it unaffordable to have full coverage on bikes. (IMG:style_emoticons/oldemoticons/pissed.gif) What a bunch of crappo.
Its a lot location dependant and of course driving record. I'm in Ohio and I have my life with State Farm - a house, 2 cars (1 liability only, 1 full), 2 bikes full coverage. The bill? Roughly $150 a month.
I'm a State Farm agent, and we do use only model yr and cc's for your rate, plus your driving record, of course. At least we do in Georgia. No extra charges for sport bikes over cruisers.
Progressive wanted $1500 a year for my VFR - full coverage in the Philadelphia suburbs.
I switched to GEICO and I got better coverage at $800 a year. I am age 52, no accidents, no tickets.
For what it is worth the insurance guy said the VFR is most often put in with SPORT BIKES and not TOURING. I don't drag my knee that much, but the stigma remains - I own a sport bike.

Ditto. LOL. They said, "Our underwrighters may say 1,350 a year". I said "Then you and your underwrighters don't want my car, house, bike, etc." They said "Oh, well we can do 630." I said "Oh, I thought you would see it my way."
WOW I'm feeling much better now. I'm paying $800 a year with full coverage on my 07. And INS rates are usaly a stupid amounts more north of the boarder than our freinds to the south.

(IMG:style_emoticons/oldemoticons/fing02.gif) to State Farm. I've shopped around but never found anyone to touch their rates here in California, about 1/2 what WildBill is paying.
SA2360, Feb 29 2008, 01:51 PM$260/YR 12 month riding full coverage.....GEICO....KY.....98 VFR.......Male 44 yr old
PS. Remind me to never move to Rhode Island.....$2600/yr???? Good GOD!!! (IMG:style_emoticons/oldemoticons/ohmy.gif)
$2600? Some of you guys need to shop for insurance or slow the hell down. I pay around 300 for full coverage on my '01 in Baltimore County MD. I'm 40 with a spotless record though.
Looks like I'm paying too much for Progressive. Full coverage at about $1200 per years and an almost spottless driving record. Let us know if you find something cheaper. I looked around and everyone was expensive.

I pay the same price with state farm. ~250 a year for full coverage, low deducable, and I'm only 20. But then again, It's under a 55 year old driver with a good driving record. (IMG:style_emoticons/oldemoticons/goofy.gif) (thanks dad!!)
I'm 25yrs old with a couple minor speeding tickets, 99' VFR w/ full coverage $500 deductable and paying $390/yr with progressive($32.50/mo acutally). But I also live in Iowa (IMG:style_emoticons/oldemoticons/smile.gif) I know guys getting better deals, but $33 a month seems pretty reasonable to me.
i think you should shop around. many insurance companies will offer large discounts if you have multiple insurance accounts with them - house, car, other vehicles. i'm in canada, so our rates are slightly higher, but, i'm 37, riding 6 years, full coverage and collision is only $525/year.
i did have quotes as high as $1500+/year. i'm not that loyal to insurance companies so if they switch carriers and rates go up i call other businesses and get a quote on all of the policies - each time i've done it in the past 7 years my insurance rates have actually gone down by about 30%.
I live near Philly as well and currently have a Progressive policy that is about $700/year. My current policy is for full coverage (w/dissappearing deductibles, and Limited-Tort) for my '07 VFR and a '03 Honda Rincon (650cc ATV). The breakdown is like $80 for the ATV and $620 for the VFR.
I recently sold the ATV and did a new on-line quote with Progressive removing the ATV and my yearly cost goes up $10/year. That is just crazy, this means by taking the ATV off my policy the VFR increases to $710/yr - thats a $90 increase for the exact same coverage on the exact same bike for no other reason than no multiple discount - stupid, just plain stupid.
My cars (2) and house are insured by USAA which does not insure motorcycles, they referred me to Progressive. Nobody seems to be able to come close to their auto/home rates and service so no use in me switching those so I may shop for motorcycle insurance in the spring when it is time to renew or call Progressive and try and negotiate a new rate for them to keep my business.
I'm 28 and pay $230/yr full coverage with Progressive. What I cannot believe is most of you are paying almost as much or more to insure a VFR than I pay to insure a '06 X5 ($820/yr). Somethings just not right...(IMG:style_emoticons/oldemoticons/blink.gif)

I went through a Insurance Broker and found PEKIN insurance rate was $200 yr for full coverage on my 1999 VFR . Spotless record , 42yrs old .
Gears, Feb 29 2008, 07:37 AMMY 2004 VFR with full coverage is about $450 a year with Geico.
Ditto, call Geico, I'm paying $600.00 a year. full coverage. And that's here in CA. I think we have the highest rates (IMG:style_emoticons/oldemoticons/pissed.gif)

Good Luck.
You're paying how much?! Do you have medical coverage on your policy?
I don't live far from you, my VFR is only two years older than yours, and I'm in my 30's. I've got full coverage on mine (comprehensive & collision), road side assistance, and $3,000 coverage on aftermarket accessories. Progressive is charging me about $300/year. The reason I don't have medical coverage is because I've always had health insurance at work (actually at this moment, I don't, but I expect to again.) Since I totaled my FZ1 last year, according to some information Progressive sent me, I'm expecting about a 25% increase in premiums on the collision part of my policy. Since my rates had always gone down year after year (if I had the same bike), then I'm guessing I'll be paying about 15-20% more this year over last (which is still pretty good.)
Tell them to take the Personal Injury Protection for you off of it. Lots of carriers will not even tell you they quoted it or tell you you can remove it. If you have health insurance, then get rid of the personal injury protection on the motorcycle insurance. I would not go with any carrier who can all of a sudden change their rate 50% or more after they give you a quote. Outside of saying they just made a mistake, or they have really good multiline discounts for placing your home, auto, etc. with them, this is very shady and borderline illegal. Insurance companies are strictly regulated and their rates, and how they are applied, are filed and approved by the states.
I have State Farm and pay about $215 every 6 months with comprehensive and collision and I am 35. Your rates are not going to be this cheap where you are located. Rates can vary widely from state to state, depending on the legal environment and insurance laws in your state. The average household pays about twice as much, or more, for insurance in TX as they do here in TN.
be warned that taking PIP off could cost you quite a bit in the event of an accident. Most motorcycle accidents include injury, and my work health insurance has a 20% copay....so if I racked up 10K in medical bills I would need to fork out 2K myself, not counting deductibles.
Also be sure you have uninsured motorist...hit and runs or illegal drivers really suck when you have injuries and they are at fault.

Gap Trash, Mar 2 2008, 10:31 PMMy agent asked if a VFR was a "crotch rocket" I replied "No sir, it is a touring bike." I suggest everyone else do the same.
Do mean calling the agent "sir" helps? (IMG:style_emoticons/oldemoticons/rolleyes.gif)
MC Insurance here in NJ is the pits. I pay about 1000 / year for the VFR and the GL1800. Coverage by Geico. Both bikes have ABS brakes, however Geico does not recognize this as a safety feature and has no discount for it. This is full coverage, with a $1000 decuctible, and 250K/500K limits. Clean record.
In NJ, we have no personal injury protection on our MC policy - this is mandated by state law. If you are injurd in a bike accident, it falls to your personal health inusurance. You can also try claiming it on your auto insurance policy, but they will sqwak. Most of your auto insurance policy writers will not cover bikes, so for a while you had to go to these oddball carriers who only did bikes. this started to change when Geico got into the act.
If you have a passenger on your MC when you have an accident, there is limited PIP for the passenger, but not the MC operator. Go figure that logic.
