I heard on a lot of Japanese bikes, there is a Factory speed lock preventing the bike to exceed something like 180kph or something like that.
Does anyone know anything about it for the VFRs?
What's the Fastest speed a VFR 800 can go?
Any way to unlock the speed restriction?
I don't know about Japanese spec machines but US models aren't locked via electronics rather it's hp vs weight vs aerodynamics induced limit. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

In US, there is a rev limiter that will stop engine from revving above 12K or so IIRC.
At those RPMs you should be somewhere around 150 or slightly less MPH.
I am not aware of anything specific to JP, but I am sure that any such device can be circumvented if need be.
Thanks so far for the replies.
Hoping someone can offer more specific information of the case and how to circumvent such a system on this bike.
I have seen a Japan spec RC24 and heard of a NC24/30 having such restrictions. Mostly it is easy to circumvent, just by cutting/disconnecting a wire in the speedo. The RC24 has a warninglight that reads "speed" and goes on at 80kmh-1. The top speed is restricted to something like 180kmh-1. Some RC24 speedo's and possibly other mechanical speedo's) have a disk-sensor combination inside that trigger a rev limiter (cuts off ignition for one or two cilinders) if the needle passes the max set speed. On the NC30 you have to solder a wire between two contacts to circumvent the restrictor.

180 KPH is only 111 mph.. Thats like 4th gear..
Or do yiou mean 180 MPH..WHICH IS 290kph...
i Havent heard of anyone being able to do 180 MPH on a vfr..

There is no speed limiter on any VFR. There is a rev limiter to protect the engine from over revving, this can not be disabled.
There would be no advantage in disabling the rev limiter if you could. It would not make the bike go faster.
Are you talking about some of the 250 and 400cc bikes that are limted to like 180.km/h. Like some of the small CBR250's have them and I think some of the NC28's. (GREY Imports) IF so then it depends on the bike. Some have black box that you can change where others you can just sodder in a resistor in the back of the speedo some where. I'm not really sure how it all works and how to get past it but there are a few sites on the net that tell you how to get around it.

Weren't you importing a US spec bike to Japan ? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif)
VFR's are not restricted as far as I know.
Are you referring to the voluntary speed restriction of 186 MPH? Suzuki and Kawasaki have limited the Hayabusa and ZX-14, respectively, to this speed limit, which was mainly dictated by a few European countries, IIRC. The ECU controls max speed some how. I thought I had read that the ZX-14 horspower/torque curves were different depending on what gear you were in.

My version of the VFR (2003 ABS) is good for 260km/h. It takes a little while for it to get those last few ticks on the speedo but if you hold it there long enough it will nudge up to 260. So I assume that we have no restrictions on our bikes and if we do that's fine 260 km/h is fast enough for me.
Sorry my first reply was incorrect. It was the VFR400 (NC30) that in Japan was limited not the NC28.
I don't know how accurate this is but this is what one site says about removing the 180 limt on the VFR400. The European models had a diff CDI and did not hace the limiter
"The "black box" upgrade for grey import bikes does not increase engine output, it simply removes the speed restriction of 180 km/h. This is triggered by a sensor via a tab attached to the speedometer needle on the back of the speedometer which cuts ignition to the rear two cylinders. The black box is an expensive option compared to simply bending the metal tab out of the way or soldering a 2.2 kΩ resistor into the circuit (which is all a "black box" has in it anyway)."

The above is exactly correct. I had to do the 2.2 resistor on my NC. I was told
that it had already been done when I got the bike but low and behold while I
was doing the rebuild that it hadn't been done. The true HRC "black boxes"
are hard to come by.
Well, I think there might be a speed restriction of 180kph on the Japan VFR800.
Well, it's too late anyways, I bought the thing.
I'm not sure if it's a re-import for the U.S. or was actually sold in Japan. Dealer doesn't know as they got it at auction.
Not sure how I can tell if it's a re-import.
I suppose the only way is to try to go past 200kph on the highway and see what happens.
If it is speed locked, I need to figure out a way to remove that.
Any help appreciated on the VFR 800
Thanks!

Granted. Seems to me, (To be honest, I have no facts), but I believe the VFRs world wide are the same, performance wise. Euro has a couple holes drilled in the side panels, to adjust the headlights, HISS, and that seems to be pretty much it.
I agree with you. The proof is in the pudding, (and ticket amount). Run it up a flag-pole, and see what happens. (152 mph, indicated, personally). Fast enough.

And I know for sure that intrajapanese Gen6s have restrictors too.

You should be able to find a label on a right side of the frame, near the tank.
AFAIK, internal bikes do not have it, exports only.
You can also look at the exhaust holes size. Restricted models have significately tighter holes.
Rather than risk a ticket or accident at high speed why
not put it on a wheel dyno and run it up safely.

Any other way's to tell? Can be a bit more specifc about this 'label' location?
Maybe a picture or sumptin'?

That label should have a VIN on it. Non-export japanese motorcycles have no VIN, AFAIK, so there is no VIN label on them.

Well... As far as I remember seeing, there is no sticker on either side.
I think the number is actually engraved into the frame underneath the handlebar pivot point.

Ok, I guess the thing is called a 'CDI Derestrictor' or something like that.
Supposed to remove the 180kph restriction on Japanese Bikes, but I'll be damned if i can find it for the VFR800 2007.

There is a Youtube video showing 257km/h on a 6th gen, I think the tach is running just short of the 11,000RPM mark. I've passed the 200km/h mark only twice with my top speed being 225km/h with the bike having lots more than I did LOL. The VFR is way more bike than I will ever need (IMG:style_emoticons/default/fing02.gif)
Have you even tried to see if it is actually restricted... It should hit 180kph in about 12 seconds so you dont need much to check it ....

OK, it's obvious we non-Japanese spec model owners don't know of a typical work-around. Until you can find someone or forum there that can help, I'll suggest this:
Get the newest edition (version 4 just released) of the speedohealer:
http://www.healtech-electronics.com/ See question #17 on their FAQ page. Then use either the A/B memory on the SH, a GPS or bicycle computer (sigma's are very good) for your real speed.

Yeah, I was looking at that Speedohealer before, but it doesn't seem that it is an end all end all hard core mod that will totally eliminate the purposeful speed restricter on this bike.
I've hear of wire-a-arounds on other bikes to circumvent it.
Will keep looking around and if I find something definitive, I'll post it for everyone's benefit/interest.
Here's another idea... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/idea3.gif)
I just saw this post from shroffman. His user info on the left says he's from Tokyo. Maybe he has a bike of the same spec as the one you're getting, and knows a way around the restrictor, if there is one.
Here is a pic of a J-spec 1st gen speed restrictor. It looks a bit like a regular CDI but smaller. The owner of this restricted 1st gen removed this box and rewired according to a EU spec wiring diagram. Have you ever removed the fairing and found a similar device?
(IMG:http://img207.imageshack.us/img207/2820/cdiavv9.jpg)
Also J-spec VFR's are restricted to 80HP.
Just comparing a J-spec CB1300 and a EU-spec, the J-spec has just 74HP 114Nm-1 where the Eu spec has 116HP 117Nm-1.
J-spec 2007 VFR 80HP 69Nm-1 compared to EU-spec 109HP 80Nm-1.

Based on the company that made that Restrictor, I've went around sniffing on their website and have come up with the likely units involved in the bike:
Denso Engine Products Japan (motorcycle)This link here will show you the diagram for ignition in a motorcycle, and the 2 units I'd probably be interested in are:
#8 ECU Unit
#9 Ignition Control Unit
The question is now (in which I have no clue about), is how the heck to mod or circumvent the device (prob #9) on the 6th gen 2007 Viffer.
If you can come up with anything else, please let me know!
Japan produces both a domestic and an export model of the VFR.
The Japan specific model is indeed power restricted. Buyers in Japan can get a "re-import" - bikes which were destined for foreign countries, but have been made available locally.
The other option is to have the local model "modified" so that it is unrestricted, and thus the same as the export models.
I have a japanese model which was "unrestricted" by the previous owner before I bought it.
Here is a Japanese site whch details the changes needed to be made to bring the bike up to full power.
http://zensan.jp/sub00.htmlP.S. the site is all japanese. Best to run itthrough a web translator for non japanese speakers (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
