Cam Chain Tensioner Question?

Hey everybody I have an 04 with 65k+ miles on it and the cam chain tensioners are getting pretty loud.

My question is:

Has anybody put a small thin flat shim in the tensioner between part #8 and the shaft that comes out of the tensioner to create more tension on the spring?? Or would this be bad.

I'm guessing that the spring in the tensioner has has lost its service limit and thought that this might be a temp fix.

I just did the a valve adj, and when un-loading the tensioners...there seemed to still be some "good spring" in them.

I have included a link to nielsons partsfische for reference.

TIA!!

Wow.

Not to be a prick. (Yet I am). LOL. Try a search on CCT and red dog.

Lots of threads around, but the search function is goofy. Gotta add, also, you made it further than most folks.

AMB!

Its the front tensioner, the rear seems to be okay cause it recieves more oil flow. More pressure on the chain doesnt stop the ratteling permantly.

New tentioners dont fix it either, only temporarily, hit or miss as to how long.

The tensioner wont fail though with the rattle , is just shaft ocsillation noise.

if you hold the plunger on one end, and the hold the screw end on the other, so they dont move.

you can remover the circlip and end cap and twist the body counterclockwise a few turns, this tensions the spring, then reinstall the cap.

Its very technique sensitive, as the whole thing can easily come apart. Then your screwed as to how much tension was actually there to begin with.

its not something the masses are going to have fun with, One guy says it fixed his but he really didnt have much milege, only 5 to 10 thousand with the fix.

You might have a new one on hand before you try to do the increased tension mod, just in case.

Have you owned this bike from new?

Yeah, got it brand spankin new in 04 and that year racked up 23, 000 miles!! My longest ride was from the chicago land area, to phoenix az straight through!

Raced a kaw 600rr for year and the start of the 06 season, snapped my right femur at talladega gp track. Now just back to regular riding!

Have a honda hawk gt 650 that has over 80, 000 miles on it....it's currently in pieces awaiting a rebuild. Poor thing, it's the fourth summer now.
