I've tried searching for an answer to this, but the best I can get are some vague allusions as to what bulbs will work in the low/high beams of the 6th gen VFR.
Apparently, the OEM bulbs are Honda-specific and are about $30/pop. If you want to replace these, you need to either buy the OEM replacements or... will H4 bulbs fit with some modification? I've heard they would, but what needs to be changed on the bulb base?
I've also seen some H4 adapter rings for sale on eBay (like this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/...spagenameZWD1V) which claim to work on 4th and 5th Gen VFRs... but has anybody attempted to use them on a 6th gen? If so, how did it turn out?
Just looking for a way to not use the OEM bulbs -- any concrete information would be great! Thanks.

That would do it for me, too, then!
So one more quick question so I can get a concrete answer:
The low beams are roughly H4s, and the high beams are roughly H7s, correct? All tab-bending and adapter plates aside.
ive replaced all my bulbs with silver stars on my 02.i dont remember having to bend or modify anything?
I tried my previous bike's adapters (ST1300) to the VFR and they did not work at all. It appears Honda changed the bulb tabs for more than two of their bikes. ARGH!!! Will try the stainless steel adapters you mentioned and let you know.

02 and up you shouldn't need to bend or use an adaptor.
Just a bit more clarification. Perhaps the H4 bulbs do not need modification, can't say at this time. Have some SilverStar bulbs (H-4) from my ST1300 and the recommendation was to clip the tabs and mount the adapters. So need to get the adapaters to see what may be going on.

I only bend one tab back, and I believe it's the one (looking at the bulb from the rear) at about the 4 o'clock position. The bulb then fits very snugly into the socket - requires a bit of pushing to get it fully seated.

My dealer didn't have any low-beam OEM bulbs in stock (he agreed that they are too expensive) and sold me some after market bulbs by a company called Pro Sport. They were $8. The part number is: Pro Sport H4 Halogen 12V 60/55W P43t 248-0137
They are a direct replacement and seem to work ok (so far).
6th gens are h4 bulbs in the low beams, the high beams are H7's
theres no bending anything, they are exact fit any h4 or h7 will fit perfectly

+1. I just replaced the low-beams with H4 bulbs on my '04 this afternoon. They had the exact same tabs as the OEMs.
Okay I received the stainless steel tab insert today for the VFR. It is the same as the ST1300s I already have tried, so some VFRs may use them, but my 2008 6th generation doesn't, next will try the standard H4s ad see if they plug into the low beam headlight area without a problem.
