I found a 2002 with 800 miles for $6000. The bike is almost cosmetically perfect. I double checked the bike with the dealer that works on it. It's legit.
The concern is that it still has all the original fluids - oil, coolant, brake and clutch. Obviously these things and the tires will need to be replaced. The owner rides it around every once in a while to keep things circulating but the dealer did tell me they went through the bike last year and replaced some injectors because they were gummed up but now it runs well. Hmmmm.
If I buy it will I just end up replacing things like fuel and water pumps? Has the coolant turned to jelly or corroded the radiator?
How about the 2002 in general? That was the first year for the 6th gen. All the recalls have been done on this bike though.
Buy it.
Change out the brake ad clutch fluid, then change them out again after 3 or 4 months. Fuel pump - leave it alone. Same for water pump. Change out hte coolant - but maybe flush it a couple times.
SPoon on some new rubber, and throw a new battery at it - then ride.
I love my 02, and if I was looking for a new biek - I'd buy the one you are looking at. $6,000 might be a bit high though. Tell them $5,000. even though the miles ar elow - you have some maintenance to do.

Too many issues (recalls, etc...) on the first few years of 6th gen, imo. I'd look for '06 or newer. Have you seen the blowout prices some have gotten on '06 and '07 VFRs, in the crate?
Wouldn't touch it if it hasn't got receipts from reputable Honda shop for recalls and upgrades.
$6000 for an '02 seems a bit high, especially if not in showroom condition and equipped with hardbags. Sure, it's got only 800 miles, but that means it has been sitting idle for a loooong time. Consider the money/labor to be spent doing ALL fluids, possibly some seals, air filter (family of mice living there?)
And that's not even mentioning that tires will need to be replaced immediately, due to aging and/or flat spots.

All the recalls have been performed. I asked the dealer. I know what you are saying about deals on 2006 though. I've recently become intrigued with the bass boat pearl black color. Ideally I'd like red with silver wheels.
I see no reason not to get an 02. I would try to get the price down a bit though. I would think $5000 would be close to fair especially considering you will have to put some work into it. Man 800 miles on an 02. Thats nuts.
02, 05, 06 blah, it's basically the exact same bike, I've ridden an 02, 03, 06 now I have an 05 and it's the smoothest out the lot. I'd say buy it and fly :D
Avg. retail for that bike is $4740, even with low miles I would try to pay less then the $6k! :fing02:
