That's right! The dealer bought mine back and I found this 02 ABS with only 5400 miles on it. As it turns out, the dealer paid me $4400 for my 04 with 18000 miles and that's exactly what I got the 02 for! I did have to do a lot of leg work as the 02 was in Bakersfield so I drove the 280 miles down there an picked it up last weekend and have spend every night this week working feverishly swapping all the *FARKLES* off of the 04 and putting them on the 02. All the hassle is well worth the peace of mind that I have a VFR that won't overheat on me! :wheel: :squid: :wheel:

Selling the bike back to the dealer is the only resolution that I could come up with that i could maintain a clear conscience but not end up taking the shaft (although I know I could have sold my bike for a little more money if it was in good working order). The dealer is who sold me a bike that had issues (and an extended warraty too, thank goodness!) so they are the one's who are going to have to live with it if they do it again to someone else. All I can say is what goes around, comes around...

2-New t-stat
3-New water pump
4-New rad hoses
5-new rads

Not to get too far into it, but all of that had been done. The problem is the bike is purging the coolant into the overflow when it gets hot, but it's not pulling it back in when it needs it resulting in air pockets in the cooling system = over heating. Anyhow, that's all water under the bridge and I'm glad I got an ABS. My insurance went from $86 a month to $42. :warranty: :wheel:

It's a Zero Gravity Double Bubble. When I test rode the bike it had the stock on it and there is a definite difference. I am not all that happy with the fit and finish of it. Notice the gaps around the edges in the pic below...
That is GREAT news, Todd. That overheating was a mystery on your '04. Given everything that was done as an effort to fix (short of replacing the motor), you think the overheating would have gone away. Welcome to the 180 - 222 degree territory! Glad to see you still ride red, as we know RED is the fastest color!

Did you insurance go down because of the ABS, or the fact that the bike is 2 years older?

Did you insurance go down because of the ABS, or the fact that the bike is 2 years older?
I would imagine it's some combination of both, but heavily weighted toward the ABS. I use Progressive and asked the agent over the phone and she said she didn't know. She just told me that when she inputs a VIN the rates are automatically populated.

Staying with the red also helped since I have the saddle bags and Sargent Seat with the red accent. I was looking @ an 03 silver but I wasn't looking forward to swapping all the plastic. Also the silver mas more $ and didn't have the ABS!!!

Sounds like a good resolution to me. It's good that the dealer was good enough to buy it back. Hopefully they find the problem before they go passing it on.

I believe that was the issue given the symptoms but the dealer didn't want to go that far into it and that not fix the problem. Whatever, it's a done deal now!

I've been dealing with the issue for 6-8 months now. It seems like my bike has spent more time at the dealer than in my garage. I had a TERRIBLE experience with the local dealer, with the general manager saying I'm "dilusional", but once I took it to the corporate level (they own dealers all across the country ridenow.com) and dealt with their regional parts and service manager the dispute was quickly resolved.
So not really kudos to the dealer, but kudos to the corporate guy!
