I'm going to get some sliders as right now collision isn't in this year's budget (i know i know). It would seem that the effectiveness of sliders would be different on our 520lb Viffers as compared to the sub 400lb RRs not to mention the girth difference (get your mind out the gutter). Also for that windy "i wish my kickstand was weighted) day in the parking lot blow over... (inspired by seeing the plastics saved on my buddy's CBR)
Please let me know what your using and how it worked out if unfortunately your ride decided to take a break from keeping the rubber side down. Pictures would be painful but fantastic for information purposes...
also what does the construction of your sliders look like? What type of plastic is used (Delrin or HDPE (High Density Poly-Etheline) maybe?) i might fabricate some of my own as im not to bad with a mill and lathe.
Best sliders available are Radar's (a member here) but I don't think he has any available at this time. Next best are R&G, followed by Motovation, then HPS. Delrin is generally used for the slider material.
They will probably help protect your fairings in a 0 speed tip over. In a crash, your fairings are still going to get rashed, but the sliders can help reduce the chance of serious damage to more expensive parts like the frame, radiators, fuel tank, etc.
Here is a picture of my VFR after it decelerated from about 100mph on its side without leaving the track surface:
http://i489.photobucket.com/albums/rr260/Jeremy556/Jennings/PA210104.jpg
I went down on the track (Mid Ohio) back in June on my CBR 600. The R&G no cut frame sliders did a very good job of protecting the bike. My fairings received very little road rash considering the nature of the accident, and no major parts were damaged. Would have been far worse without them. Well worth the money spent. Sorry I have no pictures to share.
Holly crap. That pic from 100 mph shows no damage except to the slidders. I need some of those.
I recently added R&G sliders to my 08 VFR. The unfortunate part is the Honda Water Bottle Tank on the side is presently back ordered so I modified mine, although I don't like modification (still waiting to get the R&G modified water Bottle Tank as I'm sure they do a better job). Have not actually tried mine out on the road yet as have not been riding as much as before.
I have had two zero MPH tip-overs and had to replace the lower and front cowls. Health/prescription related problems. Not pretty either, but look better now. Was not in the budget, but neither was a paint job so splurged and saved the paint job price (it was more than getting the new parts from other than the dealer).
The R&G sliders are nice but you have to modified the fairings (Lower Cowls) on both sides, which can be a bit disheartening - at least for me. They look good and can see they will help.
Hopefully I won't have the problems in the future. Have notified the Doctor and discontinued the one prescription for now.
Can do photos of the R&G sliders and my new fairings, but their website has photos too, so have not included any.
Not bad for 100MPH... The only thing i didn't like about Radar's was the small stem. when cantilevering a wider contact surface with the frame seems as if it would help out in discouraging a breakoff if the delrin didnt shred fast/easy enough by providing a farther fulcrum. I assume also using a higher grade bolt would aid in this too. the thing that came in mind with this was that a high strength bolt /not breaking off might jack up the frame more.
Is the Delrin part a bolt through part or is it threaded to go on the aluminum under piece?
BTW any more pics of the 100 MPH slide aftermath?
Also just found this which agrees with most of what i pondered
http://motovationusa.com/primer.html
I had a garage drop (foot slipped off centerstand lever) without sliders and a street drop ( at 1-2 mph trying to u-turn - poor handling on my part) with sliders. Not much damage either time, just bent levers and one small scratch in the right fairing the first time. Bent the rear brake pedal in both times, but that's an easy fix with a handheld propane torch.
With the R&G sliders, the bike was sitting at a bit of an angle instead of flat on its side. It made picking up the bike much easier. And saved my front brake lever from getting bent. :fing02:

If you look at the fairing, there is plenty of rash on it. There was also plenty of damage not in the picture; the rear fairing had a hole worn completely through it, scratches to staintunes, broken footpeg hanger, rash to the front fairing, broken windshield, etc.
You have to keep in mind that the purpose of a slider is to protect the frame, not the plastics. My sliders will collapse in a hard accident, as was the design, this takes up as much energy as possible to protect the FRAME. There has to be some give to the slider, if it were completely solid it would transfer the energy straight to the frame and then risk damaging it.
Motovation sliders connect to the rear fram tab, which is extremely weak, not a good design, if you purchase sliders, go with either R&G or my own, which should be ready again by Dec.

The R&Gs also have a small stem and larger slider area. I like this design, as I think it will more likely bend or break in the even the sliders makes horizontal contact with something (like a curb), instead of snapping off engine mounts. In another crash, I bent the bolt they were mounted to. I had a machine shop straighten it for $20.
I am not 100% sure of the construction of Radar's, I only helped install them once on someone else's bike.
One of the things I REALLY like about Radar's sliders are you can remove them by hand. I was once stranded on the side of the road because I was unable to remove my right fairing because of the R&G frame slider which you need a 19mm socket and extension to remove.

Sure...
Look at the footpeg hanger, just above the peg. Plus of course the peg, shifter, centerstand, and a good bit of the sidestand was missing from grinding off.

Understood... I don't mean to criticize, i'm a mechanical engineer and always look at different ways of doing things. I was just born that way (difficult)! I was thinking a Delrin base with an aluminum core like your own. If i don't fab my own i will probably end up with yours or the R&G. What are you charging for them? would you happen to have any Solid works drawings i could look at?
jeremy thanks for the pics... glad your ok

Your bike needs balls!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0803/rrwacko/100_0546.jpg
Yeah, I know. You took off the passenger peg brackets to go racing. But for all of you with passenger peg brackets on your bike, these are cheap ($11) and might save that $300 tail fairing.

where'd you get those? they look like the ball ends of a drill press lever...
Here's what my Motovation sliders looked like after a short ride through the desert. The only thing broken was the mirror.

That's exactly what they are. I got them at ACE hardware. $4 each. Button head bolts were $1 each

No problem, I'm the same way, there is so many contributing factors in an accident and you can't plan for them all, so I picked a happy medium between ridgidity and being able to snap off should you hit a curve or hard object that can hook the bike and cause more damage than without sliders.
I hope to have kits ready for mid Dec., they should end up being $215 Can. complete shipped, with install buttons and new engine bolt.

Agree! Radar's are A#1. I installed them on my 5th Gen last Fall. Haven't had a chance to test them yet, though (knock on wood).

Radar, are you going to take the buttons back for refunds again?
R & G slider after a 50-ish mph lowside exiting the Star Mazda turn at Buttonwillow.

Unfortunately, the bike then decided to highside when it hit the edge of the track -this is the end result.

Thanks for all the replies! this is good info.

I was taking back engine bolts, but no longer, from experience I've determined that "knock on wood" a good thing to hang on to the old one.

Excellent point, Jeremy. Guess I need to add a small ratchet, 19mm socket and extender to my road-trip "emergency kit". :)
Here are my pics. Motovation sliders after a short slide down the expressway. . . about 70 mph

Post crash trauma
My R&G sliders weren't that effective in repelling the truck that hit me :P I think if I had managed to get the bike down, they would have done a good job. I recommend them simply because they are designed well and come with a notched tank. Radar's are also really nice!

Late to the party, been away for a bit, have some catching up to do -- for fitment/looks, these R&G are on my '07 Asphalt:

That is "Nucking" beautiful!
Oh yeah, nice sliders...
I've now installed 4 sets of Radars Sliders onto both 5th and 6th gen bikes. I can't praise Radar highly enough for the quality of his products, and the care he took to design and create them.
The install is straightforward - you just need to have the conviction that you are drilling into the fairings in the right spot. And thats EASY to do with Radars guides. Piece of cake!!

Thanks! Taken during a pit stop on a road trip last January. Mighty cold and rainy up north, mid-50's by the time I hit SC.

A deep 19mm will work, but regardless, I have neither in my Honda supplied toolkit.
Did the Radar version ever come up for sale again? I'm interested in a set but haven't been able to find a for sale topic...
