Here's a few pictures of what I'm going to be doing this winter. I got more things coming. I'll post pic's as I get them. My credit card is screwed!
O2 thingies. These resistors are getting hard to find at Radio Shack. I had to go to 3 different stores to get them.

Cool, I like how you are setting this up dramatically. It's like a movie trailer: "Coming... This Fall..." or "In a world of stock bikes one man decides that he can't play by the rules..."
Drill that drain plug for safety wiring while you have it off. Even if you never do a track day, the peace of mind is worth the effort. I safety wire the drain plugs on all of my bikes including my touring rig.

Did mine at the first oil change. I too like one less thing to worry about. I can tell you what happens when the plug comes out too!!!!!

saftey wire? What are you guys talking about? Attaching a wire to the drain plug and to the bike so if it vibrates out you don't lose it?
hmmm.....
More so that it doesn't vibrate loose. Mostly done to track bikes and race cars, looks like:
http://www.rc51.org/Finished%20Wire%20Pics/end_twist.jpg
IMO, really no reason to do it on any street machine. As long as you sufficiently torque bolts (drainbolts included), you really have no worry about them just falling out. You don't really worry about it on your car, why worry about it on your bike?

ah. I see. It prevents it from loosening.
"You don't really worry about it on your car, why worry about it on your bike?" I was with you until you said this.
I take my bike far as hell from civilization, ride it at redline for hours and hours (sometimes on hiking trails), then putter home at night through the woods, in the freezing temperatures. Even though I am exaggerating a bit, I would do anything to help protect me from being stuck on the side of a lonley road far from home. I like to be self sufficient. Besides, I already carry plenty of less important things, all bulbs, all levers, duct tape, wire ties, wire, arai pods, electric pump, tire repair, headlamp, and a ton of other useful items.
anyway, good idea. sorry for the hijack. back on topic now.
Hmmmm. Juicy Ohlins shock and forks!
Were those giveaways at your Behr Sterns going away party???!! :goofy:
The closest I'll ever get to owning Ohlins tackle is when I caress and sniff them on bikes on my visits to my neighborhood Aprilia/KTM/ Bimota dealership! :(
I read a thread on here about changing the cooling fan to a different model. Instead of blowing in, it blows out. On the RC51, they used to switch wires around to blow out. But the fan was designed to work best in one direction, in. With this, I don't have to switch wires around, and the fan is designed to blow out.
The forks are off of my RC51 that I sold. I took off all of the aftermarket stuff that I had on it, and sold that stuff to buy this stuff. I still a carbon fiber air box for sale.
I did track days with the RC51. So I had that safety wired. I'm going to do the VFR too.
sweet idea but i did that too! if you want a fender that looks stock ,get a cbr1000rr the first year they came out ,plus the mounting kit for the cbr your stock fender won't fit after you get those forks on, i recommend vfr800canuck's article on how to fit those forks and the extra steps you will need to get them right ,he did a great write up on the subject.

I read vfr800canuck's article to make sure the forks would work. :fing02: I did alot of reseach on it. I want to use custom triples to keep the stock off-set, but every one I talked to wanted $2000+ plus for them. So for now I going to use the RC/CBR set-up. I have to wait until my credit card quits smoking before moving on again. LOL
Guess what I got in the mail today. These. Anybody know what they are?
http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i277/russandler/VFR/DSCN0303.jpg
They are the radial brake mounts for my Ohlins forks.

This is why my credit card is smoking.
I'm waiting on a few parts from Y something Mich. When those 2 pieces come in, I'll post some pic's.
I takes all day if you follow the Ohlins instructions... I swapped my VTEC shock out for the Ohlins in about an hour. The trick, I thought, was to raise the swingarm up as high it can go with a jackstand after removing the triangle plates and dogbone link.
Looking good though, can't wait to see the forks in there too!!

I got the Ohlins rear shock installed. What a PITA!!! On my RC51, it took about 2 hrs. On the VFR, it took all day.
Just threw on a new ELKA 3 way on my RC51 a couple of days ago. Took about 30 minutes; rather easy IMO but I have a lot of experience doing shock swaps plus an over head hoist.
I guessed the forks were for an RC (saw your garage list) and recognized the radial mounts. I threw a set of gixxer1000 six piston brakes on my RC (pulled from my RCBVFR) MUCH to the distaste of the RC faithful (burn the witch)! LOL I'm on the lookout for a used set of radial mounts.
I know what you mean about giving up on waiting for Honda. A couple of years ago, I built a VFR 4.90 (a' la the RCBVFR) and am currently modding my RC to be more of an RCVFR. :fing02:
Good luck with the winter projects. Down here, I do most of my modding in the summer . ;p

The RC51 is an easy bike to work on. The whole bike comes apart in minutes. Zuki brakes on an RC. The RC brakes are great to begin with. The Zuki brakes are a down grade. ;) On the RC, you only needed the HRC pads, SS lines, and a radial master cylinder to have one of the best brake set-ups out there.

Thanks for the offer. I have a set of Brembo's lined up right now. I need a couple of things to go my way right now before I get them. One of them is my credit card cooling off! LOL
Very cool. I'm trying very hard not to get jelouse. Can't wait to see the finished product and read the ride report. Getting ready to install race tech in my 98 to balance out the Elka 3-way I installed w/o any problems. Helibars went on tonight. So you're adapting RC51 forks to your 6th gen correct?
I have to ask. What in the sam peckenpaw are the resistors for? I'm a 5th gen guy so I didn't get the memo.

Yea, the forks are Ohlins off of my RC that I had. The resistors are the O2 sensor eliminators.
And I got Tightwad's VFRness and bundle installed too. Along with a Powerlet. I checked out my voltage with the VFRness installed. Talk about holding a steady reading no matter what I do. Hi beams on, flashers on, horn blasting, pulling power thru the powerlet. 14.39 - 14.59 volts. :fing02:
Short stacks in front, long stacks in the rear, if anybody asks. This is the way I found them. I know there has been a great debate on the placement of them. :fing02:
On the stock RC51 forks. The SP1 ('00-'01) forks are longer because there is no top out spring in the forks, so the forks have a little longer travel. The SP2 ('02-'06) forks have a top out spring in them. Giving them a shorter travel, and making them very hard to set the correct sag with them. The top out spring uses up about 10mm of travel from the forks. With the Ohlins forks. It the same model for all years now. There was a model of fork that had the standard R&T valving. I think it was from '00 to '04. After '04, the R&T fork valving changed and got the superbike valving as standard. Model FG322 which is what I got.
Ohlins does not make a model of fork for the VFR. If you want to run an Ohlins fork, you have to use parts from different models of Hondas to make it work. Which is what I'm doing. I'm posting my progress with my mods here so that every one can see what a 6.5 gen. would look like. LOL

FYI, the sp1 & 2 triples WON'T mix and match for those trying to piece a system together. Furthermore, SP2 wheels are lighter (5 spoke) and rotors thicker (less warping) than their SP1 counterparts.
Rusty, so much for a "winter" project. Shoot, you'll be done before Thanksgiving! ;)

I got 2 more pieces coming today I hope. And that will finish this round of work until my credit card cools off (need over time at work). I hope to have all of the parts I need for the fork set-up in by early spring. Plus I'm redoing my CB1 (Butt Ugly).
I got more things done this weekend. I like to thank Tightwad for his VFRness and bundle. And Rivcyko, the anal one! For his hugger, and bugbuster. Both of these two people do good work. Here is some pictures.
Finished up the wiring.

Here's the hugger, and I painted my rear rim white. I still have to do the front yet. The wife likes the white rim. She said it brightens it up. Doesn't look dull.
Since I had a mouse problem. I did an air box mod. I put in an K&N filter.(I need to take a picture of it) The surface area (pleats) is smaller than the OEM one. I removed the flapper valve and rubber snorkle. On a RC51, this the first thing most owns do, so why not on a VFR. The flapper valve is there for noise control only. I made a cover out of a piece of sheet alum. that I had. And put a screw in the flapper to hold it down. Everything can go back together again stock if I want to. I'm going to redyno in the spring to see if I picked up anything.
Damn mouse was chewing on the rubber snorkle anyway! You can see the chew marks on the lower left side of it.

You mentioned earlier looking at custom triples to get the stock VFR offset back. Attack triples are around $850; I think a set of RC51 SP1 triples with Attack's adjustable inserts would get you close to the stock VFR offset of 40mm:

Although I just saw the comment about letting the credit card cool down, and $850 triples don't help that situation!
Lacy
I already talked to Attack. Close as they can get with the RC triple is 35mm without going custom. Custom is $1800+, and he was talking in circles, like he didn't want to do it. Attack's triples no longer have a place for the ignition switch on the top plate. That's againt them too. The forks are going to take longer to put on then I thought. Besides my credit card took another wack about 5 minutes ago!
Hey Rusty......we should ride together some time.
I want to see if it's worth dumping that much in or just get the RC.http://www.vfrdiscussion.com/forum/uploads/1203398371/gallery_13129_3632_263383.jpg Picture 009.jpg

Had a RC51 fully modded out. Full Ohlins with link, carbon fiber air box, front mount radiators, stage II cams, Sato's, head work, and $$$$$$$$$. When the wife got sick, my life took another direction. Or I would still have it, along with the VFR, and CB1. Some day, I'll get another one.
Here's apicture to show the difference between a stock and K&N air filter. In hind sight, doing the UNI filter mod to the stock air filter would be cheaper and possibly better performance wise. But I had a mouse problem and didn't want to mess around with that filter. Who know' what was on it!
You can see the difference in surface area between the two.

No, Thank you. Good thing my work is never perfect, I would charge an arm and a leg. LOL. Thank you, Russ! I'm so glad you like them. They will give you years of fine service.
I got my last part in for the year. Picked up a set of Gilles Variobar clip-ons with the extension kit. The extension kit raises the bars by 100mm. You can get the extensions in 100mm, 80mm, 70mm, and 60mm. When you buy the clip-ons, if you want the extension kit, it's extra. This is not for the faint of wallet! For what it is, it's for someone with deep pockets!

I got the 100mm extensions to go with the RC51 front end I'm putting on later. Using the top triple of a CBR 929, the height should be close to stock. (I hope) The stock height is about 60mm.

So... why did you buy the VFR size Vario bars, if you're going to use them with the RC front end? Are going to buy a second set?
I got two sets. The VFR's and the RC. I had the RC's for a few years now. Never used them with the RC, as I used Sato's on it. I had picked them cheap, and just hung on to them as a spare set if I crash at a trackday. As for the VFR's, I DON'T like the angle of the stock bars. I don't want to miss any riding time and I figure it's going to take me alittle longer to change the forks then I thought. That's why I'm putting them on the VFR now with stock forks. I pretty much shot my wad right now! Credit card is in MELT-DOWN mode, and I just bought new windows for the house. Now if I can sell my '89, 400cc CB1, I would have enough to finish the fork change. Any takers?

Most definitely, work is pretty crazy right now, too. Tomorrow (Tuesday) might be the last day of the year that I can ride in (unless I get some studded snow knobbies for the VFR, haha). Thanks,
I seen your bike in the parking lot this morning. I just missed you. I'm here until Friday. I'm staying at the Tanglewood Holiday Inn.
Got some 70mm extensions for the Vario bars. That about 10mm over stock I believe. The bars feel more comfortable now. Can't wait to get out on the road now to try everything that I got done so far.
Ok, this is where I'm at now. I finally got both wheels painted white. It's all back together ready to ride with the mods I wanted. Ohlin forks on hold for now. Wife lost job, :( big hit in household income. And I have new windows for the house coming soon. Here's 2 pic's without and with bags.

I got a little something from radar today. Soon as I get a day off (go figure, everything is going down the drain and I'm working steady 12's), I'm going to put them on.
I got around to putting Radar's sliders on. NICE job on the sliders Radar! :fing02: Had a little mishap on the right side install of them. PO'ed me right off! When I was cutting through the right side fairing with the hole saw. The saw touched the water hose down to the fibers. Cost me $20.00 for a new hose. With all the mods I did so far. I'm pleased with how it's turning out. The back end is behaving like it's should. No electrical issues. I got a place for farkles now. Engine runs great. No flat spots in it. I'm still trying to track down the right off-set on the front discs to use the radial capilers that I have to go with the RC forks. I'll try to get some pictures of the VFR outside of the garage next. LOL

Any updates on your project, Rusty? :)
I was going to update after I got my new tires on. But I'll do it now.
The tires I got sitting in the garage waiting to be put on are Mich's PP for the front, and a PR2 for the rear. After reading about them. I'm going to give them a try.
The Ohlins shock for the rear is great. Nice ride when set up. If your off on your setting. You can chew up a tire. It's my riding style!
The air box flapper mod with the K+N filter is nice. I can hear the intake roar now. Just need a set of pipes now to match. LOL
With the O2 sensors gone, and mice too! And with the flapper mod. The soft spot in the throttle at about 4,500 rpm is gone. My avg. fuel mileage is 43 mpg. The worst I gotten so far is 38. And the best has been 47.
The reverse cooling fan blade, and Engine Ice for coolant. I haven't had a day over 85F when riding. So my engine temp is going to be lower then most here. On the highway. My temps are around 175F-190F. Once I'm in town. My temp gauge goes to 228F, and my fan kicks on. My temps start to come down. Once moving again, the temps drop quicker.
The Vario bars I took back off. To get them adjusted the way I wanted to. They was hitting the corners of the fairing at the front. I will try them again when I put the RC forks on. For now, I cut the tit off of the bottom of the stock clip-ons so that I could move then forward some.
I'm going to dyno again next month to see what the differnce from stock is going to be with the air box mod minus the mice  , flapper mod, minus the O2 sensors.
I'm starting to pick up some parts now for the Ohlins forks. This part of the project is taking me longer than I hoped. I had to finish my Power Wagon for the Power Wagon together at Moab Utah this past June. So that sucked up alot of money.
Overall. I'm happy with the way it's turning out. Can't think of anything else right now.
