So there I was walking to the garages to get my bike out for work, struggling to even keep myself upright due to all the ice it wasn�t long before it dawned on me what challenge lays ahead.
As I get the Viffer out, start her up warming up and purring nicely I turn towards the ice-ring that is the road leading to the high street.. A scooter shoots by on it's side with the rider falling all over the road... I rushed to go help him and he is ok, just a bit shaken.. I look no more than 100 yards down the same road and two cars had collided off onto the path.... Just a typical winter�s ride to work then...
I get on my way to work, wonder what the temp is? Well according to my mud-ridden VFR, 21c!!!
Is this sufficient material to call this thread VFR woes part III??

steve, i feel for you. your situation is amazingly uncommon. not sure why you continue to have issues.
all i can tell you is i have on 03 w/ 20k MI on it and i have had exactly ZERO problems and while not as hard as some, i beat on her fairly hard....hope your luck turns!
Man and just think. I drove the truck today because I checked the outdoor temp at 3:30 am. It was 47 degrees and wet. No ice, just moisture from the overnight fog. Man, youve got some huge nads to still ride to work after seeing a guy go down due to black ice. My hat goes off to ya. Ride safe. :beer:

thanks that's encouraging :fing02: I have no other option but to be honest I'd pick the bike over a car still, contrary to popular cager believe, I'm not a danger, I don't get cold, I don't get wet and I can leave home 20 mins later so I'd probably still go on my bike even if I had a car!

No its not. It is only evidence that it is cold and you are NUTS for riding in crazy conditions.
It may prove that you had you Temp gauge set for air temp not engine temp.
I am a little confused first of all 21c is 70f so I don't think there would be any ice at those temps. I agree that you are probably reading a farenheit reading. My confusion however stems from the fact that you physically slipped on ice and then witnessed a couple of vehicular mishaps due to the ice...... yet you are NOT in any danger riding in these conditions......Huh come again? Are you riding carbide studs on the Viffer? I am also a bit perplexed by the statement that I can leave 20 minutes later on the bike.....Does this mean that you are that much faster on the bike? Even on the ICE? Help me out I don't get it. :huh:

this is slightly off topic but yes I will gladly answer... I am not in danger because I ride all year round, and with that know what ICE on ROADS mean... hence I went an alternative route that was GRITTED... other areas means SLOW riding, feeling how the bike responds to such adverse conditions... Yes I can leave 20 minutes later because I have a bike and I can filter through the colossal amount of traffic.
any ideas of why my temp gauge is reading wrong? I still think perhaps its a build up of road grim I need to clean the damn thing but it gets too dark and colder early after work.
By the way on the way back it read 8c when I could see in the car in front its actually -1
Steve, download the VTEC service manual on page 2 under "Downloads" on the VFRD menu bar. In section 20-11 it shows the location and testing procedure for the air temperature sensor. It may need to be replaced. Thanks for posting that, HS, very handy.
I too know what Ice is, and how to avoid it, but all too often I have had a car in front/behind/beside me not know, and then they are invading my personal space in a way that becomes an insurance claim if not an injury. I can barely deal with soccer mom dispensing chicken nuggets while texting....I don't need one getting cozy with me as well.
Sounds like "black ice" conditions. Most dangerous time to drive anything on the roads.
Why take the chance??? :blink: I'd avoid riding if at all possible in those conditions.

yep looks like I'll have to check it out thanks, I guess they say thing come in threes, so thats all my VFR woes done and dusted for 100,000 miles :dry:

been riding around this past week with the temp gauge working fine? Strange things are happening! but hey my VFR is working perfect again so I ain't complaining... for the time being ;)
